Tracing (Dis)Continuities: Education Reforms in Socialist Yugoslavia and its Successor States
Get PDFContrary to what the title might suggest, this volume offers a compelling analysis of the correlation between educational policies and the wider socio-political context they stem from and partially shape. By examining three ˈcritical juncturesˈ from the (recent) past, i.e. the vocation-oriented education reform in socialist Yugoslavia, the introduction of religious and civic education in post-Milošević Serbia, and the establishment of ˈethnicˈ universities in post-conflict Sandžak, Kosovo, and Macedonia, Bacevic argues that some educational policies reproduced or even exacerbated existing divisions. This contributed to the creation of certain subjectivities and group identities

No full textAndreas Brauns Studie widmet sich dem noch recht jungen Gewaltphänomen der Amokläufe an Universitäten, welche der Autor definitorisch als neue Subform von Amok in den Mittelpunkt seiner Analyse stellen will. Diese Taten werden hier als extremes Resultat der universitären Reformbestrebungen und der Ökonomisierung von Hochschulen begriffen, welche er aus deutscher Perspektive auch auf Amerika und Großbritannien zu übertragen versucht. Trotz seiner umfassenden Darstellung der Ökonomisierungsprozesse und ihrer Auswirkungen auf die Wissenschaft und das Individuum bleibt der direkte Zusammenhang dieser Reformeffekte mit Amokläufen an Hochschulen aufgrund der verwendeten Daten und der Argumentationsführung nur schwer nachvollziehbar.Andreas Braun’s book analyses the relatively recent phenomenon of rampage shootings at universities. He defines campus shootings as a new hybrid of forms of excessive violence, such as workplace violence and school shootings. Campus shootings, he argues, are a direct result of an ongoing economization of universities that can be observed internationally. While his account of economization and New Public Management is very detailed, Braun fails to convincingly show how the negative effects of the economization can be seen as an explanation for campus shootings. Instead, based on very little data, he constructs rather oversimplifying causal chains in an attempt to explain rampage shootings at universities

No full textIn ihrer 2013 veröffentlichten Dissertation untersucht Yvonne Robel geschichtspolitische Auseinandersetzungen um die Genozide an Herero und Nama, Armeniern sowie Sinti und Roma, die seit den 1990er Jahren im bundesdeutschen Parlament und Printmedien zur "Verhandlungssache" geworden sind. Der diskursanalytische Ansatz der Arbeit prägt dabei grundlegend das Verständnis von Geschichtspolitik und lenkt den Fokus der Analyse über konkrete politische Handlungen und Beschlüsse hinaus auf die diskursiven Aushandlungsprozesse von Sagbarkeiten.
Entsprechend ist es ein erklärtes Anliegen der Studie aufzuzeigen, in welche Richtung die geschichtspolitischen Verhandlungen seit den 1990er Jahren weisen. Die empirischen Befunde machen deutlich, inwiefern die Entwicklung der Erinnerung an die drei "neu entdeckten" Genozide vor allem eine Frage der Benennung und Anerkennung ist; hieran werden gegenwärtig folgenreiche Grenzen zu konstatieren sein.In her dissertation, published in 2013, Yvonne Robel explores the controversy surrounding the genocides on Herero and Nama, on Armenians as well as on Sinti and Roma, which have become a "matter of debate" (Verhandlungssache) since the 1990s. The discourse-analytical approach marks the understanding of politics of history and memory and guides the focus beyond concrete political action towards discursive negotiations about norms of public speech and commemoration.
Hereby, the study seeks to reconstruct the "order of discourse" and, in doing so, to show in which ways the historical-political debates have developed since the 1990s. The empirical findings emphasize to what extent the direction of memory of these three "newly discovered" genocides is mainly a question of naming and recognition and that, currently, there are significant limitations on what can be said and remembered

Achim Landwehr, Lehrstuhlinhaber für Frühe Neuzeit an der Universität Düsseldorf, erklärt, dass sich seitdem die Vorstellung und der Umgang mit Zeit verändert haben. Nicht ein einziges Zeitmodell dominierte in der Frühen Neuzeit, sondern viele miteinander konkurrierende Vorstellungen sollten hier bald entstehen. Um sich dem Phänomen der Zeit im 17. Jahrhundert zu nähern, nimmt Landwehr Quellen unter die Lupe, die eine Antwort auf Fragen über die Zeit liefern können: Kalender, Uhren, Zeitungen und zeitgenössische Theorien.This work deals with time and imaginations of time during the 17th century and shows which fractions and developments can be observed during this period. Achim Landwehr, professor for Early Modern Ages at the University of Düsseldorf, explains that the meaning of time and its handling has changed since then. It was not a single imagination of time that dominated the Early Modern Period, but many competing models of time. Landwehr examines different sources to get closer to the phenomenon of time in the 17th century: Almanacs, clocks, newspapers and contemporary theories
