The Trouble With Emergence
No full textI have grown suspicious of the word emergence and the concepts it designates. More often than not, the term seems to serve as a deus ex machina whenever other models or theories cannot account for a certain new aspect or object. Emergence is then used as though it were based on a concept or a theory, when all the term does is label something as complex, unpredictable, and only comprehensible after the fact. It is my contention that, particularly in the study of culture, we need to carefully scrutinize the ways in which we use emergence and recheck them for their actual analytical and/or heuristic benefit
Pot and Power: The Role of the Nonhuman in a Very Human Business
No full textThe daily care and nursing of people of various ages with disabilities or illnesses constitutes historical and contemporary socio-cultural contexts which are said to be ‘human-centered.’ The formation of practices, politics, and the distribution of knowledge within care and nursing has always been deeply intertwined with the very formation of culture and cultures. This is apparent when focusing upon issues of cleanliness in nursing and care, which are considered to be civilized and ‘cultured,’ and includes the way we handle excrement. Notwithstanding, there is a profound lack of understanding of the significance and impact that ‘non-humans,’ such as material objects, had and have in nursing interactions. Based on empirical research on historical and contemporary institutional settings of the ‘dirty work’ of nursing (derived from material culture studies, object-centered historical analyses, and multi-sited ethnography), we analyze the complex intermingling of humans and artifacts in the ‘delicate’ endeavor of supported excretion. As we will show, material objects do play a significant role in supporting those that are unable to undertake their (delicate) business autonomously. However, they also help to transform the dirty work of supported excretion into an object-controlled mode of action

No full textSeit den Zeiten des Booms um den magischen Realismus in den 1960er und 70er Jahren, wie ist es den lateinamerikanisch-deutschen Kulturtransfers mit Bezug auf die Literatur ergangen? Was gilt eigentlich als Weltliteratur, und ist die von Goethe geprägte Idee einer Literatur der Welt heute noch aktuell? Und wenn ja, wie genau? Aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln, denen von Literaturwissenschaftler(inne)n diesseits und jenseits des Atlantiks, von einer Lektorin und einem Übersetzer sowie verschiedenen Autoren, wird der Status Quo des literarischen Austausches in dem Sammelband Verlag Macht Weltliteratur. Lateinamerikanisch-deutsche Kulturtransfers zwischen internationalem Literaturbetrieb und Übersetzungspolitik kundig und detailliert beschrieben. Es wird deutlich, dass für einen wirklichen Dialog jenseits der Klischees und eingefahrenen Konsum- und Lesegewohnheiten viel zu tun bleibt.Since the boom period of magical realism during the 1960s and 70s, what has happened to the Latin American-German cultural transfers regarding literature? How is world literature defined, is Goethe’s idea of a literature of the world still relevant, and if yes, how exactly is that? From different angles – those of literary scholars on this and the other side of the Atlantic – by an editor and a literary translator as well as by several authors, the status quo of the literary exchange is described skillfully and thoroughly in the present publication to be reviewed here. It becomes clear that for a real dialogue to happen, beyond clichés and deep-rooted consumerism or reading habits, there remains a lot to do
