Reading and Receiving the Early Modern English Mind
Get PDFWendy Walls vor kurzem erschienenes Werk analysiert mehrere englische Rezeptbücher, die im Zeitraum zwischen 1570 and 1750 geschrieben wurden. Für Wall ist es entscheidend, dass das Wort „recipe“ in seinem frühmodernen Kontext verstanden wird, nämlich in der Ableitung vom Lateinischen „recipere“. Darüber hinaus betont Wall, dass Rezepte nicht ausschließlich für Essensvorbereitung bestimmt waren. Wall weist auf diese nicht-kulinarischen Ziele des Rezeptbuches hin, prüft deren Potenzial unter anderem politische Loyalität und wissenschaftliche Erfindungen zu beweisen, sowie andere intellektuelle Debatten anzurgen. Schließlich schlussfolgert sie, dass frühmoderne Rezeptbücher als Spiegel frühmodernen Denkens gelesen werden sollten.Wendy Wall’s recent work analyses a number of English recipe books written in the period between 1570 and 1750. It is crucial to Wall’s enquiry that the term “recipe” is understood in its early modern context; its etymology is sketched out as derived from the Latin recipere, meaning “to take back or receive”. Wall builds upon the non-culinary aims for the recipe book by examining its potential to communicate political allegiances, scientific findings, and conduct other intellectual enquiries, in order to ultimately argue that early modern recipe books can be used as a guide to early modern thinking. The first, second, and final chapters are the most successful in making this case. The opening two chapters analyse the concepts of “taste” and “wit” to demonstrate the personal and aesthetic aspects of communication through recipe writing, while the final chapter discusses the concept of “proving” recipes to validate their usefulness in order to consider recipe writing as a knowledge-sharing system.

It brings together twelve scholars from different countries to trace the vicissitudes of Russian nationalism over the last decade and a half from various angles – economic, political, religious, and societal. By consulting self-conducted public opinion polls, the book seeks to demonstrate a recent turn in Russian nationalism, which became more pronounced in light of the dramatic events in the Ukraine. The edited volume provides valuable, well-researched perspectives and could serve as a good introduction for those less familiar with the subject of Russian nationalism
