Logic of Sense. Martin Urmann’s study of Fin-de-Siècle art between Paris and Vienna
No full textIn seinem Buch Dekadenz. Oberfläche und Tiefe in der Kunst um 1900 stellt Martin Urmann scheinbar Altbekanntes in eine immer wieder überraschende, grundlegend philosophische Perspektive. Die komparatistisch angelegte, Disziplingrenzen bewusst transzendierende Studie zeigt die Décadence als Epoche wie als Ästhetik in ihrer grundlegenden Wirkung auf das Denken und Wahrnehmen des 20. Jahrhunderts. So öffnet die historische Genauigkeit mit philosophischer Spekulation verbindende Arbeit tatsächlich einen neuen Blick auf das Fin de Siècle in Paris und Wien.In his book Dekadenz. Oberfläche und Tiefe in der Kunst um 1900 Martin Urmann puts a seemingly well-known period of European cultural history into a surprising and at the same time essential perspective. The comparatist study consciously transcends disciplinary borders and shows the Décadence to be an epoch as much as aesthetics, exerting primary influence on 20th-century thought and perception. Combining historical depth with philosophical speculation, the study brings out new aspects of the Fin de Siècle in Paris and Vienna
Schools under Fire? School Shootings and the Construction of a Cultural Discourse of Emergency
No full textContrary to popular belief, rampage violence at suburban and rural schools occurred before the infamous Columbine High School shooting in April 1999. While school shootings — before Columbine gained international media attention — were treated as a local rather than a national or even international problem, they are now seen as an emergent phenomenon that has to be addressed with appropriate urgency.
In this paper, I want to examine whether school shootings are in fact increasing and address the medial construction of the discourse of emergency that has evolved around these acts of excessive violence. I argue that the public perception of school shootings is inseparably intertwined with the media dynamics in the aftermath of these incidents. In these discursive dynamics, I argue, it can be seen that these acts of violence lay open society’s underlying fears. School shootings, as this paper shows, are closely linked to contemporary media logic and can be understood as examples of the contemporary dynamics of cultural discourses of emergency
The Epigenesis of Rationality: Kant with Neurobiology
Get PDFOne might wonder how two seemingly opposed concepts ended up in the same book title: epigenesis and rationality. One pertaining to biology, the other to philosophy, cognitive and neurosciences; one describing a modality of change of the living, the other usually taken to be unchangeable, universal; one empiric, the other traditionally linked to the non-sensible; one describing the structuring influence of the environment on organisms, the other the supposed purity of thought. At stake in French philosopher Catherine Malabou’s newest book (and her oeuvre more generally) is precisely this: trying to think the mutual in-formation of the real and the ideal, the empirical and the a priori, the material and the symbolic.

Es ist die erste von zwei Publikationen, die aus der Konferenz „East-West cultural exchange and the Cold War“ (Jväskylä, 2012) entstanden sind. Zusammen mit 14 Autor_innen erkunden Simo Mikkonen und Pia Koivunen transnationale Netzwerke im Europa des Kalten Krieges und verschieben ihre Perspektive weg von Staaten auf halb- und inoffizielle Ebenen. Dabei offenbaren die Kapitel einen vernachlässigten Teil der Europäischen Geschichte des Kalten Krieges, deuten aber auch auf das Bedürfnis weiterer Forschung zu Grenzlinien jenseits der Teilung des Kalten Krieges hin.The edited volume Beyond the Divide: Entangled Histories of Cold War Europe aims at tracing the manifold connections and interactions in Europe during the Cold War. It is the first of two publications to proceed from the conference “East-West cultural exchanges and the Cold War” (Jväskylä, 2012). Together with 14 contributors, Simo Mikkonen and Pia Koivunen explore transnational networks in Cold War Europe and redirect their focus from the state-to-state level to unofficial and semi-official bodies. Thereby the chapters reveal a neglected part of European Cold War History, but they also point to the need for further research on borderlines beyond the Cold War divide

Anhand von prominenten Fallballspielen ergibt sich so ein umfassendes Bild nicht nur des Austauschs von Büchern und Lizenzen, sondern auch des ungebrochenen, aber alles andere als reibungslosen Kulturkontakts zwischen West und Ost.In three chapters, Julia Frohn depicts the essential elements of German domestic literature exchange from the early post-war period to the signing of the basic treaty of 1972. Sarah Kane’s World of Depression: The Emergence and Experience of Mental Illness in 4.48 Psychosis
No full textIn this article, I discuss how the experiential world of depression is constructed and conceived of in Sarah Kane’s play 4.48 Psychosis. Kane’s depiction of severe, psychotic depression is in line with phenomenological accounts of the illness, in which depression is understood as an emergent phenomenon that gives rise to alterations in the embodied being-in-the-world of the subject. The text refers to common cognitive-affective experiences and folk-psychological understandings of the mind and employs different intertextual, narrative and poetic strategies to convey the phenomenal world of depression to its readers. In addition, Kane emphasizes that to treat depression a deeper understanding of this ‘state of emergency’ is needed than what medicalizing psychiatry is able to provide

No full textThe article investigates a dialectic that, through the work of negation, paradoxically brings the non-human as ‘anything but human’ back to the human. It shows how and why, throughout the criticism of all forms of anthropocentrism, the human being still occupies a central place in the very discourse that negates him. His principal position only changed its value from а positive to а negative one. If there is something in common among all possible non-human things in the world, it is their negative determination with regards to the human. While being actively denied, ‘human’ thus remains a main constitutive element of their identity, a kind of general equivalent, whose ontological status is highly problematic and therefore particularly interesting
