“A New Enlightenment”, or: Cosmopolitan Memory Yet Again.
Das Buch Memory and Forgetting in the Post-Holocaust Era: The Ethics of Never Again trägt zur globalen und transnationalen Wende in der kulturellen Erinnerungsforschung bei. Baer and Sznaider’s volume Memory and Forgetting in the Post-Holocaust Era: The Ethics of Never Again furthers memory studies’ global and transnational turn. Its three case studies of post-dictatorial societies focus on memory’s role in democratic transition in Argentina, Spain, and Eastern Europe. These chapters come between broader essays on the “ethics of Never Again” and “sociology of hope”. The authors present Holocaust memory as the universal foundation of human rights, while exploring its complex entanglements with particular, often nationally-bound, memories of victimhood. Unlikely to appeal to readers unfamiliar with debates over cosmopolitan memory, the book’s essayistic elements could stimulate further critical discussion on relations of memory, history, ethics, and the global among the informed
More than a Sonic Wave: Sound as/and Cultural Communication
Klang – Kontakte. Kommunikation, Konstruktion und Kultur von Klängen (Isa-Lohmann-Siems publication series, Vol. 9) is a multidisciplinary publication edited by Anna Symanczyk, Daniela Wagner, und Miriam Wendling. 13 contributions differing in methodological, historical, and content-related perspectives aim at understanding and exploring mediating aspects of sound in cultural communication processes. Within this context, it is especially transformation into and representation of sounds in language, text, and images that are key subjects of research in this volume. As a humanities-based anthology, this volume supplements the research field of sound studies, which is relatively young compared to the fields of the psychology of music and psycho-acoustics, and offers discipline-specific impulses
Who is Paying for our Lifestyle? On “Externalization Society” and “Imperial Mode of Living”
Who is paying for our lifestyle? With these volumes on “externalization society” and “imperial mode of living” we are confronted with multi-layered crises such as climate change, growing global inequalities, and the exhaustion of natural resources. In light of these pressing societal issues, it is no coincidence that two books were published recently that broach the issue of the crisis of our global development model and our way of living. While the sociologist Stephan Lessenich (Munich) coined the term “Externalisierungsgesellschaft” in his book from 2016, the two political scientists Ulrich Brand (Vienna) and Markus Wissen (Berlin) submitted an analysis of the “imperial Lebensweise” in 2017. Both books demonstrate impressively that our consumer society has its price, one which is paid first and foremost by the people in the global South.

“The Beginning of the End”. The Lofts of SoHo and the Role of Artists in the Early Days of Gentrification in New York City
Aaron Shkuda’s The Lofts of SoHo recounts how between 1950 and 1980 the New York City neighborhood of SoHo turned from an inner-city industrial district into an artist’s enclave, thereby laying the groundwork for the gentrified space that SoHo represents today. Shkuda’s account focuses on the role that artists played in transforming the neighborhood and analyzes how artists entangled with other political and economic actors were crucial in the redevelopment of the neighborhood after and during its deindustrialization. By analyzing the 20th-century redevelopment and eventual gentrification of SoHo in extraordinary detail and structural clarity, the book makes a very valuable contribution to the study of gentrification in New York City and US-American cities that – although historical in scope – is of pressing interest for students of today’s city as well
The Symbolic, the Real, and the Imaginary between Legend and Tale
Storibuk Pairundu: Tales and Legends from the Kewa (Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea), collected by Alex Yapua Ari and edited by Holger Jebens sketches a unique combination of tales and legends narrated by the indigenous people. Given several previous fieldworks in Papua New Guinea, this book frames in its introductory remarks the past ethnographic and anthropologic efforts in analysing fairy tales. Additionally, this volume features some facsimiles of Alex’s handwriting. In order to make the stories more accessible to the reader, Jebens augments his work with a group of photographs that depict different aspects of the people of Pairundu, such as clothes, food, and cultivating
The Juridical Voice of Literature: A Perspective on Literature’s Entanglement with Normativity
Based on the logic of the Lacanian mirror paradigm, Pierre Legendre claims that every culture needs to create a metaphysical entity of Reference, for the sake of the legitimacy and validity of its normative system. This entity disguises the abyss at the core of culture and legitimates it by staging itself as its origin. The Reference not only authenticates individual and cultural subjectivity, but also becomes the foundation of law. Given that Legendre attributes a fundamental role to aesthetics in the creation of this entity, my essay will identify the role of literature in this respect, arguing that, on the one hand, literary texts help confirming the readers’ attachment to a specific order of Reference, i.e. of normativity and imagery. On the other hand, my essay claims that literature also has the capacity to reflect on the basis of cultural normativity and to unveil the contingency of normative truths. This results from what I call the cultural structures of testimony. Thus literature unleashes emancipatory forces with regard to a culture’s normative system. The essay tests this hypothesis by analysing E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Sandman, a narrative that because of its play with the categories of fiction and reality is particularly salient
The Post-Modern Hero: When the Spectacle Becomes Reality
In his darkly thought-provoking book, Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi considers capitalism’s effect on mental health through the lens of crime and suicidal mass murder. Heroes speculates on the trajectory of human history by delineating the implications of the growth of spectacular suicidal mass murder: capitalism’s bleeding together of capital, politics, media, virtuality, mental health, and violence. For Berardi, suicide is a declaration of autonomy as well as a form of resistance that represents “the most significant political act” (195) in the current age of nihilism and capitalist absolutism. What is Berardi’s answer to capitalist absolutism and a regressive, violent future? Nothing is to be done, so don’t hope. Distance yourself with irony. While Heroes does not claim to be a manifesto, Berardi does intend it as an anecdote to the degeneration of human evolution and a map for a new ethics
Knowledge in the Digital Age
Using a hybrid theoretical approach, Robert Gutouing examines the processes of knowledge production in digital networks. The explanatory models used are illustrated by exploratory analysis of two knowledge networks: open source software production as well as the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. The socio-political and ethical dimensions that arise are taken into consideration. The overall goal of this article is to re-evaluate the issues raised by the question Jean-François Lyotard posed in 1979, about knowledge in post-industrial societies, which in recent decades evolved into a knowledge-based networking society
Recognition, postcolonialism and social (in)justice. On the asymmetrical transnational memory politics of the Herero-Nama-genocide
In seinem neuesten Buch Namibia and Germany. In his new and timely book Namibia and Germany. Negotiating the Past the sociologist Reinhart Kößler offers a comprehensive and insightful study on transnational memory politics and subaltern commemorative practices related to the Herero-Nama-genocide, focusing on the specific asymmetrical character of the present debate and the challenges of "postcolonial reconciliation" in such a setting. The main aim is to contribute to an understanding of "actor constellations" within the complex field of transnational memory politics. In doing so, the book critically reflects on the postcolonial situation, raising some urgent questions: where is the space of the affected communities in this transnational memory politics? Do the descendants of the genocide victims actually have a voice in these bilateral talks? The book thus successfully brings together several sites and motives of this postcolonial (memory) conflict in an account of the difficulties and continuing injustices in "transnational communication over a dire past" (p. 10).
