No full textFuturologien: Ordnungen des Zukunftswissens der Herausgeber Benjamin Bühler und Stefan Willer bietet vielfältige Perspektiven auf die Themen Wissen von der Zukunft und Wissen in der Zukunft sowie die daran anknüpfenden Potentiale und Problematiken. Der vorliegende Sammelband gibt Beispiele und Anregungen zur interdisziplinären Forschung im Bereich des Zukunftswissens aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. In fünf Sektionen und 36 Artikeln werden verschiedene Ordnungen des Zukunftswissens vorgestellt und dabei eine historische Bandbreite von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart erreicht. Auf den zweiten Blick jedoch wird deutlich, dass der Begriff über disziplinäre, zeitliche und örtliche Grenzen hinweg überraschend vielseitig anwendbar ist. Die Publikation Filmstil. Perspektivierungen eines Begriffs, herausgegeben von Julian, Blunk, Tina Kaiser, Dietmar Kammerer, und Chris Wahl, ist das Ergebnis einer Forschungsnetzwerkkooperation zwischen Marburg, Potsdam, Zürich und Wien. Ihr gelingt es, dieser Vielseitigkeit einen wissenschaftlichen Rahmen zu geben. In 15 Beiträgen, die von einführenden Überblicken bis hin zu tiefenanalytischen Einzelstudien filmstilistischer Verfahren reichen, untersuchen die Forscher_innen die mannigfaltigen Bedeutungen und Funktionen von Filmstil unter Berücksichtigung theoretischer, historischer sowie methodologischer Perspektiven aus den Film- und Kunstwissenschaften.Filmic discourses are hardly imaginable without the usage of the term ‘film style’. No full textDie Monographie Jenseits des Spiegels. Das Sehen in Kunstgeschichte und Visual Culture Studies widmet sich dem komplexen Verhältnis von Kunstgeschichte und Visual Culture Studies. Mit einem diskurs- und wissenschaftshistorischen Blick auf das Sehen, eine Schnittmenge beider Wissenschaftsdisziplinen, untersucht die Kunsthistorikerin Susanne Falkenhausen die jeweiligen Erkenntnisinteressen und ihre theoretischen und methodologischen Konsequenzen, indem sie exemplarisch kanonische Texte auf ihre Motivation hin befragt. Die Autorin spricht sich für eine wissenschaftliche Praxis des dialogischen Sehens aus – und damit für eine ethische Dimension, welche die Spannung zwischen Objektivität und Subjektivität aufrechterhält und die ‚Fremdheit’ des Gegenübers anerkennt.The monograph Jenseits des Spiegels. Das Sehen in Kunstgeschichte und Visual Culture Studies is dedicated to the complex relationship between art history and visual-culture studies. With a discourse- and scientific-historical perspective on the act of seeing, identified as the overlapping moment of both disciplines, the art historian Susanne Falkenhausen examines the epistemological interests as well as the theoretical and methodological consequences by questioning canonical texts. The author advocates a dialogic approach to seeing in the process of interpretation – for an ethical dimension which not only maintains the tension between objectivity and subjectivity but also acknowledges the ‘otherness’ of the opposite entity
Undoing Ableism: Disability as a Category of Historical and Legal Analysis
No full textIn this essay, I will apply disability as a category of legal and historical analysis to undo the different forms ableism can take in US history and law. My aim is to look at a specific time period in US history – the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century – in order to elucidate narratives of exclusion and marginalization of disabled people on the one hand and resistance and resilience on the other. I claim that in this period, disability gains political and legal relevance as an intersectional category of analysis, which leads to the cross-connection between ableism and other dominant ideologies. I will look at two distinct historical and legal contexts, the interrelation of ableism and classism in the context of the industrialization and the subsequent socioeconomic discrimination of disabled factory workers. As a legal subtext, the fellow servant rule will be discussed to understand how this law becomes relevant for disability politics. Additionally, ableism is explored in the context of racism to understand how atavism and biological determinism contributed to the othering of disabled people, especially disabled women, in the context of eugenic ideology of the early twentieth century
Political Alterity in Pathé’s French and British Newsreel Coverage of the May 1968 Events in Paris
No full textThis article analyzes the use of alterity in Pathé’s British and French newsreels depicting the May 1968 events in Paris. It argues that items from both newsreels construct the viewers’ country as a center of civilized democracy, using various figures of alterity (including voiceover, dubbing, camera techniques, cuts, and other forms of editing) to distance those at home from the scenes of violence on the streets of Paris. The French newsreel presents Charles de Gaulle as a democratic leader and blames naïve students in the Latin Quarter for inflaming violent sentiments among the impressionable “ordinary workers.” By contrast, the British newsreel presents the French government as failing to control a warlike mob with unreasonable demands. Though they frame the divisions along different lines, the items from both newsreels use alterity to differentiate their audiences from the protestors on the street and to place the responsibility for the riots far from home
Politics and Political Alterity in the Spanish NO-DOs of 1968
No full textNO-DO is the official name of the Spanish state newsreels, an acronym formed by the abbreviation of Noticiarios (News) and Documentales (Documentaries). In contrast to cinema newsreels in other occidental countries, NO-DO is closely associated with Franco’s dictatorship (1939–1975). Created by Franco’s propaganda ministry in 1943, NO-DO reels were shown until 1981, just a few years after Franco’s death in 1975. The aim of this paper is to analyze Spanish newsreels’ modes of representation of politics and of political alterity in Mouffe’s sense. It seeks to examine how NO-DO portrays the political antagonism that facilitated the Francoist regime’s construction of its own identity. In order to do so, the paper firsts draw a genealogy of this genre in Spain and frames it within the context of 1968. Second, it presents an overview of the contents and the modes of representations of the newsreels during this year, later focusing on the timeframe from May to August. The goal is to examine the medial strategies used by the newsreel genre to deal with political Others lurking within and beyond Spain’s borders

Er zeigt jene Muster auf, die einem historischen Narrativ zugrunde liegen, das bereits seit der spanischen Eroberung von indigenen Autor_innen entwickelt wurde. Um traditionelle Rechte einfordern zu können, zogen diese Schriftsteller_innen die aztekische Vergangenheit ihrer Vorfahren heran. Ihre Argumente werden vor dem Hintergrund der wandelnden sozialen und rechtlichen Stellung mexikanischer Indigener analysiert. Villella zeigt wie der Austausch zwischen kolonialen einheimischen, spanischen und kreolischen Autor_innen dieses Narrativ formte, das weiterhin mexikanische Politik und Vorstellungen darüber beeinflusst.With the monograph Indigenous Elites and Creole Identity in Colonial Mexico, 1500–1800 Peter Villella provides an intellectual history of native Mexican historiography over three centuries. He maps the patterns underlying the historical narrative developed by indigenous authors starting shortly after the Spanish expansion, who drew on their ancestors‘ Aztec past in order to uphold traditional rights. Their arguments are grounded in a close analysis of the changing social and judicial status of Mexican native people. The author argues that interactions between colonial native, Spanish, and creole writers shaped this narrative in constant flux, which continues to inform current Mexican politics and imaginations

Mittels einer komplexen ethnographischen Erzählung, die in sieben Geschichten aufgeteilt ist, zeigt die Autorin die politische Wichtigkeit natürlicher Entitäten („Earth Beings“) im alltäglichen Leben einer Gemeinde in der Nähe von Cuzco. Diese Reflexion zu indigenen politischen Praktiken in einem postkolonialen Kontext lädt uns nicht nur dazu ein, andere Existenzformen und andere Formen „Politik zu machen“ anzuerkennen, sondern auch über ethnographische Lesarten indigener Praktiken kritisch nachzudenken.The ethnographic monograph Earth Beings from Marisol de la Cadena takes a closer look at indigenous practices that have challenged modern state politics in Peru in the last fifty years and that are described as „cosmopolitics“. Through a complex ethnographic narration, composed of seven stories and two interludes, the author shows the political relevance that natural entities, also called „Earth beings“, play in the lives and political struggles of two indigenous leaders from a community located in the region of Cuzco. This approach to indigenous politics in a postcolonial context not only invites us to acknowledge other forms of existence and other forms of „doing politics“, but it also critically revises ethnographic readings about indigenous practices
