Anhand von Performance-, Video- und New Media-Künstler_innen, die allesamt mit Telepräsenz-Technologien experimentieren, stellt Paulsen dar, wie widersprüchliche Momente aus der Nutzung jener Interfaces entstehen und wie diese asymmetrische Bewegungen von Macht und Handlungsmacht hervorbringen. Discussing the works of seminal performance, video, and new media artists that experiment with telepresence technologies, Paulsen exposes the contradictory states of being that inhere the use of their interfaces, and how asymmetrical movements of power and agency are produced within them. In doing so, the book offers novel perspectives from which to discuss the ever-increasing interactions between the tangible world and the “physics of screens”
The Law’s Gender: Entanglements and Recursions — Three Stories from Sri Lanka
No full textThe essay examines the recursions, rationalities, limits, and promise of the law drawing on three recent cases of women who encountered law enforcement authorities at courts in Sri Lanka. It provides a strong account of how dominant gender norms are mobilized to determine who is afforded the sanctuary of the law and who is not. By foregrounding the troubled encounters of the women with the law the essay also demonstrates the ways in which the law, culture, and the state combine, pull apart, and recombine in a manner that draws attention to their own internal relations; and how procedures established to ensure legal objectivity and judicial impartiality often fold back on themselves, reflecting the pliancy of the law. The essay also foregrounds the conditions of possibility, including feminist legal methodologies, that enable women to (re)turn to the law despite its transgressions. In doing so it argues for seeing the law as multilayered and recursive, reflecting the thick and uneven conditions under which women access justice in Sri Lanka. In highlighting how these women challenge and bargain with the law, the essay also acknowledges their tenacity and endurance in what, ultimately, is an effort at demanding an improved and substantive justice
‘University is Ill’: Representations of the Italian Student Crisis in 1968 Radar Cinematografica Newsreels
No full textIn 1968, the protest culture of the younger generation reached its peak internationally, and it was at the universities that students ignited the turmoil. That same year, Italy too intensely experienced such student protest against the political, social and cultural status quo. This article aims at exploring how the events related to the student protests at Italian universities were portrayed in three 1968 Radar Cinematografica newsreel items. After a brief historical contextualization of the Italian student crisis, each newsreel item will be examined for the traces of alterity between students and the ‘establishment,’ as featured in the voice-over commentaries. In doing so, I intend to investigate the extent to which these newsreel items’ representations of the Italian student protest movement depicted the sociocultural fracture between university students and society in that year. As far as the theoretical framework of this article is concerned, it will be shaped by Michael Pickering’s concept of the ‘stereotypical Other,’ since I aim at looking into how the clash of political views and ways of thinking society is portrayed in these newsreel items by means of a process of alterization of the students and their protest actions
Newsreels from 1968 Communist Bulgaria: The Encompassing Us vs. the Different Them
No full textThis study provides an original interpretation of 53 newsreels, produced and projected in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in the year 1968. Based on a thorough audio-visual analysis, the article shows that newsreels are prime examples for the power of politics to employ visual art and the unique features of cinema for its own aims. The study has three main findings. First, it establishes the multifaceted role of newsreels in Bulgaria in the historical context of 1968, drawing particular attention to the dynamic relations between the Soviet and Bulgarian peoples. Second, it investigates the ways in which newsreels construct underlying ideological oppositions and visual presentations of Us versus Them. More specifically, the article outlines several distinct forms of and relations between Us and Them in their historical and ideological contextualization. Third, the article shows that Bulgarian newsreels from 1968 cannot be regarded as one among many kinds of works of socialist art, or as just visualized news. Newsreels carry a strongly politicized message and are therefore a highly potent means of shaping and manipulating the public opinion. The article contributes to the broader field of newsreel studies, offering new insight to a subject matter that is still underrepresented

Der Sammelband bietet neue Perspektiven auf eine Institution, deren fortwährende Bedeutung für die britische Kultur und Gesellschaft nicht zuletzt durch ihre stetige Popularität aufgezeigt wird. Die thematische und materielle Vielfalt verbunden mit der methodischen Klarheit der Beiträge macht die Publikation zu einer interessanten Lektüre, die diverse Anknüpfungspunkte für zukünftige Forschungsvorhaben sowohl im Bereich der Medienwissenschaften als auch der Monarchieforschung bietet.Mandy Merck‘s edited volume The British monarchy on screen comprises seventeen articles dealing with the multifaceted layers of media representation of the British monarchy. Its sections are devoted to studying topics covering the interactions between monarchy and media in Victorian times as well as the role of the empire and commonwealth relations within filmic depictions of the monarchy, leading to forms of popular participation in royal events and contemporary Anglophone cinematic takes on the British monarchy. The collection thus offers new perspectives on an ancient institution whose popularity indicates its enduring importance for British culture and society. The thematic and material diversity in conjunction with the methodological clarity of the featured contributions offers an interesting read, providing several points of departure for fruitful future research both in the realm of media studies and royal studies

Lewis und Benjamin Piekut herausgegebenen Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies macht ein sich bisher eher informell entwickelnder Diskurs einen großen Schritt in Richtung seiner endgültigen Institutionalisierung innerhalb der Scientific Community. Dabei zeigen die beiden umfangreichen Bände sowohl die Heterogenität der Forschung als auch ihr Potenzial. Dass Improvisation nicht auf eine spezifische Form künstlerischer Praxis beschränkt werden kann, sondern Kern allen kreativen Tuns und also jeder Praxis ist, machen sowohl die Anlage des Handbuchs wie die einzelnen Beiträge deutlich. Damit rührt das Unternehmen aber auch an die allgemeinere Frage, inwiefern Improvisation ästhetisch oder aber primär ethisch gesehen werden muss.Georges E. Lewis’ and Benjamin Piekut’s Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies is another step toward the scientific institutionalization of a hitherto rather informal discourse. The two volumes are proof of both the heterogeneity and the particular potential of this field of research. That improvisation is more than just a particular artistic practice but the core of creativity as such and hence of any praxis, is implicit to the handbook’s overall conception as well as to most of its contributions. That way, however, the project also touches on the wider question: whether improvisation has to be understood aesthetically or primarily from an ethical standpoint.

Dabei kreisen die Beiträge um die Fragen wie einerseits Kinder in einer globalisierten Welt innerhalb nationaler Konstrukte aufwachsen und lernen, sich als Bürger*innen eines bestimmten Staates zu identifizieren, obgleich die Idee Kindheit immer mehr als globale und kosmopolitische Ideen betrachtet werden kann. Andererseits sind Migration und Staatenlosigkeit nur zwei weitere Bedingungen, welche die Frage nach Nationalität in Frage stellen.The book Childhood and Nation. Interdisciplinary Engagements, edited by social scientists Zsuzsa Millei (Univ. Tampere, Finland) and Robert Imre (Univ. Newcastle, Australia), discusses questions about childhood and nation within eleven examples from different countries. Thereby, the chapters target issues regarding the difference between children growing up in a globalized world while being raised as national citizens. Consequently, the book elaborates on the tension between the national identification every child is confronted with and the pertinent idea of childhood as a global and cosmopolitical concept. In this respect, migration and statelessness are seen as two conditions questioning nationality in recent times

Damit bringt sie Licht ins Dunkel der Formen und Funktionen dieser Aspekte bzw. ihrer Repräsentationen in Gegenwartstexten. Darüber hinaus wird dadurch sowohl der Vergleich als auch die transmediale Anwendung vieler narratologischer Theorien ermöglicht.Jan-Noël Thon\u27s transmedial approach in Transmedial Narratology and Contemporary Media Culture (2016) provides a synergistic analysis of how narration in films, comic books, and video games works. Focusing on the three aspects of storyworld, narrator, and subjectivity, it sheds light on the forms and functions of these elements and their representations in contemporary texts. It thus also facilitates the comparison and transmedial application of many narratological theories.

Wechselseitige Herausforderungen, herausgegeben von Mechthild Bereswill, Folkert Degenring und Sabine Stange, widmet sich den Möglichkeiten der forschungspraktischen Umsetzung des Intersektionalitätskonzepts und lotet dabei Potentiale sowie Grenzen aus. Die Beiträge stammen aus verschiedenen geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen und stellen individuelle empirische Forschungsprojekte vor. Gleichzeitig reflektieren sie jeweils ihr methodologisches Vorgehen in der Analyse von sich überkreuzenden Ungleichheitsverhältnissen.
The edited volume Intersektionalität und Forschungspraxis. Wechselseitige Herausforderungen by Mechthild Bereswill, Folkert Degenring, and Sabine Stange addresses the potentialities and limits of implementing the concept ‚intersectionality‘ in empirical research. The disciplinary background of the articles covers the different social sciences and the humanities. The articles represent individual empirical research projects while simultaneously reflecting on their methodological approaches in the analysis of intersecting conditions of inequality.
