Get PDFMit seinem Sammelband Memory in Ancient Rome and Early Christianity tritt Karl Galinski mit seinen Mitstreiter_innen an, eine Einleitung in die Anwendung der „memory studies“ in den Altertumswissenschaften zu geben. Dies soll zugleich zu weiteren Diskussionen und Forschungstätigkeiten anregen. Zu diesem Zweck wurden 13 Fallstudien zu fünf Oberthemen versammelt. Zentrale Untersuchungsbereiche sind dabei die Rolle der memoria in der kaiserzeitlichen lateinischen Literatur, der Umgang der Kaiser mit Erinnerungen, die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen visual culture und memoria und die Rolle der Erinnerung in der römischen Religion und dem frühen Christentum. Hinzu tritt ein Aufsatz aus neuropsychologischer Perspektive.With the anthology Memory in Ancient Rome and Early Christianity Karl Galinski and his fellow contributors aim to give an introduction into the application of the field of “memory studies” in the ancient studies. In addition, they want to encourage further discussions. In order to do so they have collected 13 case studies under five main topics. Central fields of investigation are the role of memoria in the literature of the roman empire, the interrelation between emperor and memory, the interdependence between visual culture and memoria, and the role of memory in roman religion and early Christianity. Bypassing the Law in a Homeless Vehicle: Alan Bennett’s The Lady in the Van
No full textIn The Lady in the Van, British playwright Alan Bennett recounts his two-decade acquaintance with a homeless woman who ended up living in a van in his driveway for 15 years. The story has gone through several incarnations, from Bennett’s diary entries (published 1989) to a stage play (1999) and a film adaptation (2015). Subverting and disabling the law and its institutions with the help of a vehicle is a key theme in all these versions of the story. Laws regulating the activities have notoriously criminalized poverty and excluded the poor from social and economic participation. This essay discusses how Bennett’s narrative and its adaptations expose and question the heteronormative, bourgeois-centric practices of anti-homeless laws via a disruption of dominant tropes of poverty and homelessness. The texts also grapple with the practical conflicts around invasion of personal space that are inevitable results of sharing space with a physically and mentally unstable person. A specific focus will be on the fluidity of the division between public and private spaces that requires constant negotiation

King argues that Arendt left important traces on the political culture of the USA, and that America, in turn, influenced Arendt profoundly. Among others, the author addresses Arendt’s stances on racial inequality in the US, the American Revolution, and her polarizing report Eichmann in Jerusalem and the subsequent controversy over it. From corsairs of Algiers to G.I.s in Lahore, the author collects and scrutinizes a vast body of literature on the hostis humani generis constellation’s spatial, narrative, legal, and philosophical formulations. The development of the constellation – from Augustine of Hippo through Frederick James Turner to Giorgio Agamben – provides an opportunity to revisit classical and critical literary narratives of legitimate violence against hostis humani generis

Mit Rückgriff auf literarische und philosophische Werke insbesondere des letzten Jahrhunderts zeichnet der Philosoph Emil Angehrn in seiner Monographie Sein Leben Schreiben die Wege der Erinnerung nach. Er arbeitet heraus, wie sich die Erinnerung in ihrer existentiellen Bedeutung zur Lebensbeschreibung und zur menschlichen Zeiterfahrung verhält. Seine Ausführungen sind ein gelungenes und äußerst lesenswertes Abbild der Verstrickungen von Erinnerungen, Zeit, Selbst und Sprache, das sich nicht zuletzt der Frage stellt, wieso der Mensch überhaupt nach Erinnerungen verlangt.Since the dawn of men memories have been of great interest. By drawing on literary and philosophical works, especially from the last century, the philosophical monograph Sein Leben Schreiben attempts to make the ways of memories observable. Emil Angehrn explores memories in their existential meaning and their interaction with the concept of life-writing and human temporal experiences. His considerations are highly worth reading and a thoroughly well written reflection on the entanglement between memories, time, language, and the self. Moreover, he raises the question why we desire memories in the first place
