Cultural Studies Perspectives on Remains
No full textDer von Christiane Lewe, Tim Othold und Nicolas Oxen herausgegebene Band Müll. Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf das Übrig-Gebliebene eröffnet in Schlaglichtern Zugänge zu ‚übrig-gebliebener‘ Materialität in kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Ausgehend von der Annahme, bei nicht mehr gebrauchten Dingen handele es sich um das Ergebnis sozio-kultureller Zuschreibungsprozesse, interessieren sich die Beiträge für so unterschiedliche Phänomene wie die Inszenierung von Müll im Fernsehen, Gender und Schmutz, Gebäuderecycling, Self-Storage oder künstlerische Auseinandersetzungen mit Müll. Als gemeinsamer Schnittpunkt der Fallstudien stellt sich dabei das Vorhaben heraus, den als konventionell unterstellten Abwertungen des Übrig-Gebliebenen entgegenzuarbeiten. Eine literaturwissenschaftliche Perspektive fehlt hingegen.The volume Müll. Serving as a common intersection of the case studies, it turns out that the volume tries to counteract the devaluations of remains as they are conventionally attributed. However, the perspective of literary study is found to be absent

Steinweis, Doerte Bischoff, Claus-Dieter Krohn, and Lutz Winkler provides the reader with a synthesis of research on exile and the study of the Shoah. With the aid of an interdisciplinary approach the volume shows the interplay between the personal experiences of German-speaking exiles and their scientific and literary work that often helped them cope with traumas they suffered. By changing between general illustrations of the exile and concrete examples of biographies, the edition not only covers the current state of research but also offers new questions and approaches in the study of exile and Shoah.Mit dem Sammelband Exil und Shoah, ediert von Bettina Bannasch, Helga Schreckenberger, Alan E. Steinweis, Doerte Bischoff, Claus-Dieter Krohn und Lutz Winkler, gelingt den Herausgeber*innen eine Synthese zwischen Exil- und Shoahforschung. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Band zeigt auf anschauliche Art und Weise Wechselwirkungen zwischen persönlicher Erfahrung deutschsprachiger Exilant*innen und ihrem wissenschaftlichen und literarischen Wirken auf, das oft der Bewältigung der erlittenen Traumata diente. Die Darstellung liefert einen auf breiter Quellen- und Literaturbasis gestützten Überblick über die letzten 200 Jahre und fokussiert dabei auf den Aspekt des Zusammenlebens in der multiethnischen Stadt, ohne jedoch den konstruktiven Charakter nationaler Kategorien aus dem Blick zu verlieren. Weeks knüpft sowohl thematisch als auch regional an seine frühere Forschung an und verbindet einen sozialgeschichtlichen Ansatz mit kulturgeschichtlichen Aspekten, ohne jedoch politische Kontexte zu vernachlässigen. Den speziellen Herausforderungen einer modernen Raumtheorien verpflichteten Geschichtsschreibung trägt er Rechnung, indem er seine Fragestellung immer wieder an topographische Entwicklungen rückbindet. The book is based on a large variety of sources and provides a valuable overview of the past 200 years. The author vividly describes ethnic cohabitation and collaboration as well as struggles and destruction. Thereby he makes use of national categories while emphasizing the city’s historical fragility. Writing this book, Weeks partially returns to subjects and regions of his former studies. His approach convincingly combines aspects of social and cultural history while contextualizing findings within a broader political history. Informed by a modern history of space the author engages topographical developments such as memorials and street names and juxtaposes them with contemporary historiographical narratives

Otherness in the Context of Martin Luther King’s Assassination in Les Actualités Françaises of 1968
No full textThe concept of alterity is always related to identity, and based on one’s self-perception: the Self influences what we perceive as the Other. Following this idea, the present article explores the hidden Self of French cultural identity in French newsreels, Les Actualités Françaises, from 1968. It examines the construction and representation of alterity in the news coverage of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, and, consequently, what that reveals about French national self-perception. This event is notable for two reasons: first, Dr. King’s death is an event of extraordinary international importance; second, the news coverage not only presents alterity, but also the handling of alterity by another culture. Therefore, in this example, the concept of alterity operates on multiple levels. The objective of this article is to analyze the interaction of image, music, text, and voice-over in this newsreel; the newsreel’s effect on the French viewers; and the French national self-perception that is mirrored in the newsreel’s representation. The argument will show that deep-rooted French values, existing since the French Revolution, have a strong influence on the perception and evaluation of the events in the US, and therefore on the handling of otherness
