Lived Islam. An Empirical Study of the DITIB Mosque Communities in Germany
In contrast to the majority of recent works that have tended to analyze Islam as a field of conflict and part of integration debates, the book Gelebter Islam: Eine empirische Studie zu DITIB-Moscheegemeinden in Deutschland by Theresa Beilschmidt focuses on the religious life and religious practices of DITIB mosque community members in Germany. It is based on the in-depth study of three mosque communities and ethnographic (participant) observations in the federal state of Hessen and presents an alternative look at Islam “from below”. By analyzing the empirical material, the author provides valuable perspectives on the main aspects of Muslim religiosity in the German society
Queering Practices of Everyday Life and Science
Der Sammelband Queer as... The critique of normative identity constructions, gender binary, and heterosexuality is far away from being an integral part of academic research. The edited volume Queer as... – Kritische Heteronormativitätsforschung aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive attempts to partly close this pertinent research gap. In order to open the reader’s eyes to a heteronormative, critical way of thinking about academia, art, pedagogy, law, and everyday life, scientists of different disciplinary backgrounds convincingly explore the relations of queer knowledge and practices in everyday life and science
Productivity of "Non-Knowledge"
In her monograph Die Produktion der Katastrophe: Das Tunguska-Ereignis und die Programme der Moderne, Solveig Nitzke interprets narratives of the “Tunguska”-event that shaped the corresponding discourse: as a riddle, as a catastrophe, as a myth, as a secret and as a historical incident. Between scientific and literary discourse on the one hand, and expert and lay research on the other, “Tunguska” threatens the orders and hierarchies of knowledge within modernity. Nitzke unfolds this nature-culture-hybrid and shows the productivity of “non-knowledge” for the study of culture
The Legal Person and Its Other : A Comparative View on Drawing and Effacing Boundaries in Various Cultural Contexts
“De-humanizing law” calls for a discussion of the concept of the legal person because legal processes of personification have at times gone beyond the anthropocentric bias in legal thinking and the definition of personhood has often brought about de-humanizing results. By scrutinizing various culturally and historically dependent drawings of the boundaries of personification, it shows that the presumed equivalence between legal persons and humans does not hold. This is illustrated through an analysis of legal personification of animals and some recent legal attempts to attribute personality to nature. In contrast, there have always been efforts to deny certain human beings the status of legal persons. Despite becoming more inclusive historically, modern law does not eschew with creating abnormal non-persons to underline the construction of individual/rational attribution and accountability. Defining legal personhood not only implies a differentiation between persons and non-persons, but, especially in the Western world, between persons and things. Whereas bio-political issues have somewhat challenged this division, there are examples showing that in some contexts this division was never made clearly in the first place. Finally, cultural heritage reveals the occidental bias concerning the conception of personhood, namely its link to an individualized image of the ingenious author
“You too, Brutus?” Michel Foucault’s Relation to Neoliberalism
In Foucault and Neoliberalism Michael C. Behrent, historian, and Daniel Zamora, sociologist, historicize Michel Foucault\u27s intellectual engagement with (neo-)liberal theory in order to criticize his status as left thinker – and the concordant prevalence of his approaches. This volume brings together seven critical perspectives on the intellectual and political development of the \u27late\u27 Foucault in order to open up the possibility of a more effective, left critical theory; instead of dismissing his extra-ordinary influence, this essay collection delineates thought-provoking analytical approaches that fuse Foucault\u27s \u27governmentality\u27 framework with Marxist ideology critique
The Depiction and Interpretation of the Ambiguous Nature of Boredom and Everyday Life in Contemporary Comics
With What Happens When Nothing Happens Greice Schneider lays the groundwork for an aesthetics of boredom and everyday life in comics by steadily exploring and travelling between the concepts of comics, boredom, and narratology. The author sets important constraints on comics storytelling in relationship to boredom by drawing on works of contemporary comic scholars. Moreover, the book historically traces the development of the concept of boredom, pointing out that there is no universally accepted definition of boredom. The term has been applied in many cultural contexts and covers a variety of states of mind. The book furthermore offers tools to analyse boredom in contemporary comics, since boredom is not yet a narratological concept
A Future Lost: Artistic Appropriations of the Socialist Internationalist Legacy in Africa
The publication Red Africa edited by British curator and writer Mark Nash sets out to excavate a seemingly forgotten past: the socialist friendship with Africa in the Cold War. The contributions present the results of a two-year research project and seasonal programme at Calvert 22 Foundation in London that included the exhibition Things Fall Apart, film screenings, and seminars. In the form of a collage, transcripts of conversations are assembled together with six scholarly essays and glimpses into the work of eleven artists and artist groups whose projects were on display at the exhibition. The mix of exhibition catalogue, edited volume, and glossy art magazine enters into a conversation with its readers and viewers that is equally intriguing and confusing and that leaves them wanting more
Children, Childhood, and the Historical Politics of Welfare in National, Imperial, and Global Contexts
In recent years, the histories of child welfare and children’s charities have been enriched by other historiographical developments, such as new imperial history, cultural history or the history of the globalizing processes. Thereby, historians have reassessed cultural constructions of childhood by examining the ways in which politicians, social reformers, philanthropists and scientists have attempted to make use of poor and (supposedly) needy children at home and abroad in order to further their respective political and social projects. This essay discusses three recent books that, by studying specific aspects of child welfare in nineteenth-century Britain and the United States, deal with the political, social, and cultural dimensions of child welfare and its development in national, imperial, and global contexts. This essay, moreover, discusses how the authors, examining a broad range of historical records (such as sources from welfare institutions, state archives, philanthropic journals, promotional literature, and oral history interviews, etc.), explore both the discourses on children and childhood as well as practices of child care that led to the formation of private and public welfare politics for geographically near and/or distant children in changing social and political contexts
A Book Made of Steel: Rereading the Technological History of Europe’s “Long 20th Century”
Writing the Rules for Europe. Writing the Rules for Europe. Writing the Rules for Europe. Experts, Cartels, International organizations is the fifth out of six books from the series Making Europe: Technology and Transformations, 1850-2000. As such, it offers to the readers a new perspective on our understanding of Europe and challenges many well-established truths in contemporary Western historiography. The work of Johan Schot and Wolfram Kaiser switches the focus from political to technological history. It redirects our attention from the politicians and diplomats to the international experts, engineers, specialists, businessmen, lobbyists, and innovators. Failing to take them into consideration, as the authors argue, risks profoundly limiting our understanding of European integration, European organizations, and even the European Union itself. Writing the Rules for Europe. Experts, Cartels, International organizations is a guide to the long-term processes which continue to shape the European presence and its future
