Re-aligning Yugoslavia: The Construction of Alterity in the Yugoslav Newsreels
No full textDuring the 1960s, Filmske Novosti (the state-run Yugoslav Newsreels) played a key role in the representation of President Josip Broz Tito’s international travels. Tito visited newly independent African and Asian countries in search of political alliances, and the newsreel reports framed these diplomatic travels as solidarity performances. Assigning two cameramen to follow the presidential trips Filmske Novosti produced a series of portraits of nascent nation states and their receptions of Tito, accentuating a discourse of similarity and unity as a challenge to Western political hegemony. As Yugoslav Newsreels extended their reach, exchanging these reports with a total of 40 countries by the end of the 1960s, their work became an influential medium advocating the process of decolonization in the international arena. This article looks at the legacy and perspective they offer in constructing narratives of an ‘alternate’ representation of non-aligned countries to Yugoslav audiences. It further argues that this strategy of representation had significant consequences for the political situation within Yugoslavia. In 1968, this narrative resulted in a public sentiment of solidarity and identification which became evident in the protests that erupted in Yugoslavia, revealing how the internal political narrative was also reshaped in terms of alterity
Alterity — A Category of Practice and Analysis: Preliminary Remarks
No full textThis article provides introductory remarks on the concept of ‘alterity,’ which could stimulate the discussion on newsreels/media and their representation of the Other. Starting from the observation that ‘alterity’ has often been overshadowed by an overestimation of ‘identity,’ the article differentiates between various fields of ‘alterity’: amongst them, ‘real alterity’ in societal practice, ‘representational alterity’ in media contexts, and attitudes of ‘othering’ in movements between alterity or alienness. It critically brings to the fore some underlying frameworks and unspoken assumptions. Finally, the article asks whether the positioning of alterity in 20th-century newsreels has provided first approaches for overcoming its binary corset in the direction of a global circulation of images. Can this perhaps be seen as a step towards turning our attention to a revaluation and new recognition of the Other

No full textDie Dissertation Die Großstadt als literarischer Raum in der römischen Dichtung von Elsa-Maria Tschäpe untersucht, unter Berücksichtigung des aktuellen Forschungsstands zur Raumtheorie sowie modernen Literaturwissenschaft, die Darstellung der antiken Großstadt Rom in der römischen Dichtung. Den zwei theoretischen Kapiteln folgt der Anwendungsteil mit Beispielanalysen, wobei die Autorin zu der Schlussfolgerung kommt, dass Rom sowohl Handlungsort als auch Gegenstand dieser Literatur ist, ihre Repräsentation und Imagination aber vielfältig und perspektivisch abhängig sind.The dissertation Die Großstadt als literarischer Raum in der römischen Dichtung by Elsa-Maria Tschäpe examines the representation of the city of Rome in Roman poetry. Taking into account the results of the latest research on the spatial theory within the context of Modern Literature and Classics, Elsa-Maria Tschäpe investigates various texts from Roman poetry with a focus on depictions of Rome and therefore offers a valuable overview of the literary discovery of the city that contributes to the current research of spatiality in Classical Literature
Questioning the History of the Bildungsroman with Pierre Bourdieu
No full textDer Sammelband Der Bildungsroman im literarischen Feld entwickelt die Verwendung von Bourdieus Feldtheorie für die Hinterfragung der Gattungsgeschichte des Bildungsromans. Er beschäftigt sich in erster Linie mit der Frage, warum einige Bücher in dem Kanon dieser Gattung als zentral gelten, während andere – obgleich mit ähnlichen textuellen Merkmalen – eher randständig im Genre des Bildungsromans sind. Durch Untersuchung von Sekundärliteratur, Rezeptionen und Rezensionen beschreiben die Beiträge wie seit der Etablierung des deutschen literarischen Feldes um 1800 Autor_innen um eine bessere Position in dem Gattungsfeld konkurrieren und welche Positionierungsstrategien dabei verwendet wurden. Die Analysen sind nachvollziehbar und überzeugend. Daneben sind die im Buch entwickelten Perspektiven und Begrifflichkeiten aussagekräftig, auch für zukünftige Auseinandersetzungen mit literatursoziologischen Fragen über Gattungsentwicklung und -differenzierung. The edited volume Der Bildungsroman im literarischen Feld sketches an alternative history of the ‘Bildungsroman’ genre through a careful observation of reception and secondary literature. By applying Pierre Bourdieu´s field theory, the book depicts the German literary world as a literary field where the authors as social agents are fighting over positions. It traces the development of the German Bildungsroman from its beginning until today, asking how it happens that some novels are considered central in the genres canon, while others with exactly the same textual features are not. This innovative approach proves to be convincing and develops a theoretical framework that seems promising for dealing with future questions about the development and differentiation of literary genres

No full textIn dem Sammelband Die Logik des Museums. Beiträge zur Museologie von Roger Fayet geht es um die Vielschichtigkeit von Ausstellungen in Kunst- und Historischen Museen. Dabei stehen theoretische Fragen zur Arbeitspraxis von Kurator_innen im Vordergrund, angefangen beim Sammeln hin bis zur Aussonderung von Museumsexponaten. Die Zuschreibung von Bedeutung durch die kommunikationstheoretische Mehrdeutigkeit von Objekten sowie deren Platzierung im Raum verweisen dabei auf mögliche Sinngebungen von Ausstellungen. Fayet erläutert und kommentiert zeitnahe Debatten zum Ausscheiden von Museumsobjekten aus Sammlungen oder zur Nachvollziehbarkeit von Autorenschaft in Ausstellungen. Dabei tritt er mit diesem Buch ein für die Entfernung von Objekten aus Museumsbeständen und kritisiert damit museale Sammlungspraktiken.The edited volume Die Logik des Museums. Focusing on theoretical discussions of the practical aspects of the curatorial business, Fayet analyzes modes of collecting and discarding museum objects. The attribution of meaning based on the communicational ambiguity of objects as well as on their mode of positioning refers to the possible interpretations of exhibitions. Fayet elaborates and comments on the debates tied to the discarding of museum objects and the comprehensibility of authorship within the museum context. He argues against the removal of objects from museum collections and is therefore critical of their collecting concepts

Law Undone: Corporeal Subversion in Mariella Mehr’s Stoneage
No full textAt a time in which the corporeality of excluded subjects is prominent in socio-political discourse, this article proposes a critical interdisciplinary reading of the way in which the juridical positioning of the corporeal is designed to obscure the threatening ruptures in the originary body of the law. The sedentarizing anti-nomadic program of removing children and incarcerating them as wards of the state in Switzerland between 1926 and1972 demonstrates a systematic juridical authorization of the attempt to disrupt and excise the ‘diseased’ and ‘degenerate’ body of the Yenish from the ‘ordered’ body of the pure state. Through a close analysis of Mariella Mehr’s novel Stoneage (1990 [1981]), read through a theoretical framework informed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s work on the “Body without Organs,” Giorgio Agamben’s reading of Primo Levi’s “Muselmann,” and vulnerability theory, this article aims to lay bare the ways in which law is implicated in the process of negating corporeal disorder in the context of a eugenic program conducted against the ‘unlawful’ body
