Making Indigeneity: The Beekeeper’s Perspective
No full textA new nationalistic concept of ‘autochthony’ has developed in Sardinia in recent decades, which has progressively intertwined with various territorial matters in seeking to affirm an alleged biological authenticity of Sardinia and Sardinians. As a consequence of this sentiment, safeguarding the biodiversity of Sardinia has become a way to ‘purify’ the island from species that are considered symbols of the alleged subordinate role into which Sardinians have been confined since the Savoy regime. In this paper I discuss the role of beekeepers, focusing on how different notions of the autochthonous are used to shape the edges of territoriality. For the Sardinian beekeeper, working within a territory means becoming part of it, linking one’s own history to the history of the place. As such, working with local honeybees is a way to work with the tradition of su connotu (the known). Finally, I show the differences in discourses of territoriality and spatiality among Sardinian beekeepers and how these differences determine a new category of indigeneity that contrasts with the policies of cultural homogenization aiming to build an ‘authentic’ Sardinia

The Politics of Being in Contemporary Theory and U.S.-American Narrative Fiction bringt Elizabeth Kovach literarische Untersuchungen mit dem ontologischen turn in der Philosophie zusammen, indem sie kritisch untersucht, wie sich post-9/11 politische Realitäten in der Literatur wiederspiegeln. Die Analyse von sechs aktuellen U.S.-amerikanischen Romanen bewegt sich zwischen Themengebieten einer Prekaritäts- Rhetorik, neoliberalen Wachstums und Überwachungs-Ontologien. Diese realen Sorgen werden anhand eines komplexen Zusammenspiels zwischen erzählerischen Mitteln und „ontological dispositions“ (S. 37) der Romane gelungen aufgezeigt. In ihren Analysen vergleicht Kovach dieKonvergenzen zwischen derzeitigen Ontologien und der literarischen Darstellungen eines „state of grave concern” (S. 184), der durch die neoliberalen Verwüstungen in den Charakter_innen verankert sei.In her pioneering work Novel Ontologies After 9/11. The Politics of Being in Contemporary Theory and U.S.-American Narrative Fiction, Elizabeth Kovach brings together literary investigation and the ontological turn in philosophy by critically approaching post-9/11 political realities mirrored in narrative fiction. The analysis of six recent U.S.-American novels oscillates around precarity rhetoric, neoliberal expansion, and surveillance ontologies. Those real-life concerns are demonstrated through a complex interplay between the narrative devices and “ontological dispositions” (p. 37) of the studied novels in concise argument. The authors of this multi-disciplinary volume show how identity, traditions, and diaspora are three ways through which the political, theological, and socioeconomic history and everydayness of the largest minority in the Middle East can be negotiated. To make sense of the complexities entangled with these three dimensions, the book mainly studies the attempts of Coptic Christians to solve the challenges that stand against the ‘visibility’ and the ‘stability’ of their faith. The book adequately emphasizes the ambiguity of the unfixed boundaries that define the meaning of and the belonging to an imagined Coptic community

Get PDFIn der Monographie wird die jugoslawische Jugendpresse der 1960er und 1970er Jahre durch das aus der westlichen Medienforschung stammende Konzept alternative media analysiert. Drei jugoslawische Besonderheiten prägten die Entwicklung dieser Mediengattung: die Selbstverwaltungsdoktrin, Einführung der Semi-Marktwirtschaft und Dezentralisierung des Föderalstaates. Durch einen Vergleich der Jugendmedien in den drei größten urbanen Zentren (Belgrad, Zagreb und Ljubljana) weist der Autor auf ihre entscheidende Rolle in der 1968er Bewegung hin, sowie auf die kontext-abhängigen ideologischen Unterschiede zwischen den drei analysierten Republiken. Des Weiteren werden auch die gesellschaftliche Funktion der einheimischen Punk-Szenen in den 1970ern und die designbezogenen Neuerungen der Jugendpresse ausgewertet. Durch ihren innovativen methodologischen Ansatz und sorgfältig recherchiertes Quellenmaterial stellt Marko Zubaks Monographie einen wichtigen Beitrag zum boomenden Feld der Medienforschung des Kalten Krieges dar.The book analyzes Yugoslav youth press in the 1960s and 1970s through the conceptual lens of alternative media, originating in Western media studies. Three Yugoslav peculiarities informed the development of this media genre: self-management doctrine, introduction of market elements into economy, and decentralization of the federation. By comparing the youth media outlets in the republican centers of Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana, the author points out the crucial role of youth press in 1968 revolts, as well as the contextually induced ideological differences between the three mediascapes. The book also analyzes the blossoming of the punk scene and its social function during the 1970s, and important design-oriented innovations that this type of media introduced to the Yugoslav public. With its innovative methodology and diligently researched sources, this monograph represents a welcome addition to the burgeoning field of media studies dealing with the Cold War era

Mit einer breiten geographischen sowie thematischen Spanne untersucht Stoler den Effekt akademischer und politischer Konzeptualisierung von imperialer Geschichte auf die Kontrolle der Parameter mit denen wir die heutige Welt verstehen und wie sich, als direkte Konsequenz, imperiale Strukturen und Beziehungen wandeln. In her analysis, she offers new tools to make “colonial entrails” (p. 4) visible, guided by three main interests: 1) How concepts produce, reflect and maintain inequity 2) The difficulties of writing colonial histories that are entangled in the geo-political present and 3) “Unlearning” about colonial governance and critically engaging with misunderstandings. Durch die sorgfältige Analyse von fünf literarischen und filmischen Genres schlägt Theodore Martin einen innovativen Ansatz vor, um die Gegenwart durch Genre und generischen Wandel zu historisieren. Dieser vorgeschlagene Weg, das Jetzt zu benennen, ist besonders für Studierende und Wissenschaftler_innen der Literatur- und Filmwissenschaft aufschlussreich, die sich für Genre-Theorie und zeitgenössische kulturelle Artefakte interessieren. Herausgegeben von Nina Heindl und Véronique Sina untersuchen die Autor_innen unterschiedliche literarische, künstlerische und (trans)mediale Vermittlungen der Shoah, die nicht nur die Vergangenheit neuartig verarbeiten, sondern auch die traditionellen Konventionen der Repräsentation infrage stellen.The debate concerning how to sufficiently depict the Holocaust has never lost its popularity. On the contrary, it continuously emerges in the context of new ways of representation and new media. The volume Notwendige Unzulänglichkeit (‘Necessary Inadequacy’), edited by Nina Heindl and Véronique Sina, is composed of eleven interdisciplinary, yet very coherent contributions. They aim at analyzing Holocaust portrayals in art, literature and new media through the lens of the tension between the need for a re-elaboration of the past and the inadequacy of grasping the Shoah in its totality. The authors focus on the self-reflexive charge of the new forms of representation that are not limited to conveying the Holocaust, but critically reflect on the conventions of traditional representations

Diese behandeln die soziale Stratifikation und Reproduktion von Ungleichheiten bezüglich Bildung, Wohnraum, Ethnizität, Gender, Migration, politscher Macht(losigkeit) und Konsummacht. Obwohl die einzelnen Artikel teilweise nur lose verbunden erscheinen, verspricht die Vielfalt des Buches hinsichtlich der Disziplinen der Beitragenden sowie der angesprochenen Themen einen Erkenntnisgewinn sowohl für erfahrene Wissenschaftler als auch für Studienanfänger, die sich für das sozialistische Jugoslawien interessieren.The collection of articles titled Social Inequalities and Discontent in Yugoslav Socialism and published as a part of Routledge’s Southeast European Studies revisits some of the numerous neuralgic spots of mid and late Yugoslav socialism. The authors engage with the work of Yugoslav sociologists of the time and further enrich their work with original qualitative sources regarding social stratification and reproduction of inequalities in terms of education, housing, ethnicity, gender, migration, political power(lessness) and consumer power. Though individual articles seem to be somewhat disconnected, the book’s diversity in terms of contributors’ disciplines and the topics addressed promises a good read for the experienced researchers and newcomers alike to the curious case of socialist Yugoslavia.

Diese am GCSC und aus der Forschungsgruppe „Research Area 8“ (Cultures of Knowledge, Research, and Education) entstandene Publikation ist eine interdisziplinäre und kollaborativ erarbeitete Studie von acht AutorInnen, die Geistes- und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen in ihren persönlichen Schreibräumen besucht und mit einem breiten Fragenpanorama zu individuellen, technisch-materiellen, praktischen, medialen, sozialen, institutionellen, ökonomischen, politischen und ideellen Hintergründe befragt haben. Ihre Ergebnisse stellen sie in themenspezifischen Einzelkapiteln vor. Damit leistet dieser Band einen wichtigen Beitrag zu bislang kaum erforschten Strategien und Praktiken in der kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung.The volume Library Life: Werkstätten kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschens provides an insight into the practices of these places and the production of cultural knowledge.
