Unfinished Business, Continuous Growth and Persisting Interests. Making Sense of Foucault’s Last Years: International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (Giessen)
In Foucault’s Last Decade Stuart Elden portrays the intellectual history of the last ten years of Michel Foucault’s life. By referring to published and unpublished sources (some only newly available to the public) as well as the testimonies of friends and colleagues, he convincingly reconstructs the development from Discipline and Punish via biopolitics and governmentality to Foucault’s interest in sexuality and antique ethics. Centering on Foucault’s main works and courses at the Collège de France from 1974 to 1984, Elden brilliantly discusses key concepts at their first emergence and concisely traces their development in regard to the entirety of Foucault’s work. He also promptly discusses various issues that shaped Foucault’s work, intellectually and institutionally
On Culturalization and Popularization of Gender: Genealogien, Praktiken, Imaginationen
The volume Metamorphosen von Kultur und Geschlecht, edited by Andreas Langenohl and Anna Schober, focuses on performances of gender in politics, science, fine arts, and popular culture. Through several recent examples, it shows how gender differences are publicly problematized as well as celebrated within social, political, and artistic-aesthetic contexts and how these processes changed in the 20th and 21th centuries. Drawing from studies on genealogies, practices, and the imagining of gender, different processes of meaning production are observed in their entanglement and critically discussed in the context of categorical demarcations. The various cross-disciplinary methods and objects of analysis make the reading of this volume particularly rewarding and highlight the intersections between discourses on the theory of science and political as well as aesthetic practices of gender
Reality Stranger than Fiction. Living the American Dream in Socialist Yugoslavia
By looking at the developments in Yugoslav culture during the 1960s through the conceptual lens of ‘Americanization’, this book shows that, despite its socialist socio-political setup, Yugoslav society underwent a profound transformation that had a distinctly American prefix, eventually producing a decidedly Americanized socialist youth. The relatively unrestrained import of American cultural products to Yugoslavia proved to be a win-win situation for both American and Yugoslav regimes. While Washington kept Tito a safe distance from the USSR, Yugoslav communists fostered their population’s sense of freedom and superiority over other socialist societies, as well as the desired external image of ‘socialism with human face’. Through its methodological symbiosis of cultural, diplomatic and history of everyday life analysis, the book offers a welcome enrichment for the research on cultural diplomacy and Cold War Studies, further advancing the scholarly ’thirding’ of Cold War dichotomies
African American (Im)Mobilities in the Antebellum United States and Today
Two publications shed light on past and present forms of black (im)mobilites in the United States: In Colored Travelers (2016) Pryor explores the journeys of free African Americans in the antebellum North before slavery was officially abolished. Bringing cultural, literary, and mobility studies together, Pryor analyzes the ways black travel was circumscribed through laws, social practices, and the creation of cultural imageries that criminalized black mobility. Examining an abundance of historical sources, Pryor’s meticulously researched book reveals the complex intertwinement of race, travel, and equality — a topic that continues to be of central importance, as Miles’s The Post-Racial Negro Green Book (2017) underscores. With a format modeled after a 20th-century travel guide for black travelers, Miles’s book documents incidents of racial violence and discrimination against African Americans in the years between 2013 to 2016 throughout the U.S. She thus adds to Pryor’s historical perspective by pointing to the continued criminalization of black mobility and she highlights the relevance and urgency of discussing and taking action against these injustices
Beyond the West and Beyond the Canon – Feminist Ecocriticism Today
Current controversies around the Anthropocene concept and global climate justice underline what many ecofeminist scholars, and specifically postcolonial ecofeminists, have been stressing for decades: The ongoing suppression of female and queer voices and bodies is not only deeply intertwined with racism and colonial violence, but also with the destruction of nature through those same forces and histories. There is a need for intersectional approaches and voices which take the multiple dimensions of human and non-human experience seriously; a gap which this present edited volume, Literature and Ecofeminism, Intersectional and International Voices by Douglas A. Vakoch and Sam Mickey sets out to fill. It offers a number of insightful and careful analyses of literature and covers a lot of ground, both historically and geographically
What is Missing from the Arab Spring?
In his new monograph, sociologist Asef Bayat ethnographically and historically analyzes the challenges that came with the ‘revolutionary’ phenomenon of the last three decades. Beginning from the Iranian revolution in 1979 till the recent uprisings that hit many Arab countries in 2011, Making Sense of the Arab Spring embraces not only a regional but also a global comparative approach. The book illustrates what a radical change means (or does not mean) for the people, who initiate such uprising in confrontation with the respective regimes and authorities in charge. Although Bayat traces the unfortunate absence of any sign of revolutionaries and revolutionary ideas shortly after their emergence in the streets, he closes on a hopeful note, inviting the readers to think about new horizons that can lead to “imagining and working for alternative futures” (p. 223)
Culture and the Non-Human World in Crisis
In ihrer Monographie Ecology without Culture. In her monograph Ecology without Culture – Aesthetics for a Toxic World, literary scholar Christine Marran calls for a reconsideration of the role that culture can play in the current ecological crisis – both through cementing ethno-nationalist imaginations of the natural world and their subversion. Through an analysis of mostly Japanese literature and film, the author shows how certain biotropes (images and metaphors that point toward the natural world) and aestheticizing of non-human scales and perspectives can lead to a more environmentally engaged form of culture. Marran imagines literary studies that are attuned to the challenges of the more-than-human material world and throughout her book develops exemplary multi-layered analyses of primary texts
Exploring Surveillance Culture
It seems to make sense — though it might be annoying — when you receive internet ads that seem to match your interests, just after you clicked on a site for household tools or exotic vacations. This is a commonplace, unremarkable online event in the early twenty-first century. But what about old-fashioned email? Can corporate surveillance track you there? Surely. Commercial emails contain a high density of third-party trackers
