Als erster Band der neu gegründeten Reihe Zwiegespräche im Kulturverlag Kadmos versucht das Buch, inhaltlich wie formal und gestalterisch, ein interdisziplinärer Dialog zu sein. Verhandelt und reflektiert werden Kleist und Heidegger ebenso wie fotographische Aufnahmen aus Extremsport und avantgardistischer Kunst. Entstanden ist so: ein teils sprunghaftes, oft inspirierendes, aber stets durchdachtes und mitreißend komponiertes Essay aus zwei Stimmen.In Was der Fall ist ... Prekäre Choreographien, Winfried Gerling and Fabian Goppelsröder investigate falling and plunging – in reference to paintings and photographs, literature and philosophy, specifically and figuratively. As the first issue of the newly founded series “Zwiegespräche”, published by Kulturverlag Kadmos, it attempts to create an interdisciplinary dialog, contentual as well as formal and in its material appearance. Debated and reflected are Kleist and Heidegger, photographic documentations of extreme sport and avant-garde works of art. What finally emerges is a sometimes disjointed, often inspiring but always elaborate and stirringly composed essay of two voices

No full textIn Zeiten einer alles erfassenden Digitalisierung scheint das Zeichnen mit Stift und Papier Relikt einer Welt von gestern. Selbst als künstlerische Praxis ist die analoge Zeichnung heute beinahe obsolet geworden. Dass Toni Hildebrandt in seinem Buch Entwurf und Entgrenzung. Kontradispositive der Zeichnung 1955–1975 sich auf einen mehr als vierzig Jahre zurückliegenden Ausschnitt der Kunstgeschichte konzentriert, ist da zunächst nicht weiter überraschend. Tatsächlich allerdings ist diese Studie nicht auf den historischen Fachbeitrag zu reduzieren. Entlang der Dekonstruktion des klassischen Dispositivs der Zeichnung bei Hartung, Morris, Dieter Roth oder Daniel Buren stellt er gerade auch die Frage nach den Möglichkeiten des Zeichnens heute.In times of all-encompassing digitalization, drawing with a pencil on paper seems to be a relict from a bygone world. Even as artistic practice it has become obsolete. Consequently, one could think, Toni Hildebrandt’s book Entwurf und Entgrenzung. Kontradispositive der Zeichnung 1955–1975 focuses on a chapter of art history lying more than forty years in the past. However, this study is not just a specialist contribution to a discussion led only by experts in the art movements in the 1960s and 70s. Alongside the deconstruction of the classical dispositif of drawing in the oeuvre of Hartung, Morris, Dieter Roth or Daniel Buren he points less at the historical than at the actual potential of drawing in our time

Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility beweist wieder einmal, dass Gesellschaftsveränderung und die Ausbildung von Subjektivität auch im 21. Jahrhundert noch eng gekoppelt sind an Fragen von Sichtbarkeit – handelt es sich doch um ein Feld, auf dem schon immer um Vorstellungen, Normen und Wissen über Differenzkategorien gekämpft worden ist. In einem paradoxen Moment, in dem Trans*-Menschen immer sichtbarer in den Mainstream-Medien werden und zugleich mehr denn jepsychischer und physischer Gewalt ausgesetzt sind, öffnen die 21 inter- und transdisziplinären Beiträge von überwiegend trans* und queeren People of Color (Wissenschaftler_Innen, Künstler_Innen und Aktivist_Innen) eine wichtige Tür zum Nachdenken über folgende Frage: Wie können Trans*-Menschen in Kunst und visueller Kultur sichtbar werden, ohne wieder diskriminiert und stereotypisiert zu werden? These have always acted as a battleground that allows expression of different perceptions, norms, and knowledges about categories of difference. Focusing on the current moment when trans* people appear to be winning the struggle for visibility while also continuing to be subject to psychological and physical violence on a daily basis, the 21 inter- and transdisciplinary contributions from mostly trans* and queer scholars, artists and activists of color open ‘new doors’ for thinking carefully about the ethical question of anti-discriminatory politics of trans* visibility. Therefore, this is a long overdue and essential companion for everyone who is interested in ethics of visuality

Die Autoren der Kapitel argumentieren dabei, dass ein ‚orthodoxes‘ Leben durch die alltäglichen Interaktionen, die während der Gebete entwickelt werden, einerseits möglich gemacht, andererseits jedoch ebenso erschwert wird. Was Menschen hören, sehen und sagen, selbst wenn sie privat beten, kann daher als kontinuierliches Beziehungsmilieu angesehen werden, in dem die ‚richtigen‘ ethischen Normen der christlich-orthodoxen Tradition verhandelt und bestimmt werden.What is the relation between the Christian Orthodox tradition and people’s everyday lives? The volume, Praying with the Senses: Contemporary Orthodox Christian Spirituality in Practice, edited by anthropologist Sonja Luehrmann, aims to “describe the workings of prayer in a tradition where hierarchies and prescriptions matter but where they are deployed through flexible and highly personal relationships” (p.12). In doing so, the authors of the chapters argue that living ‘the perfect Orthodox’ life is made both possible and difficult through the everyday interactions that people develop during their prayers. Hence, what people hear, see, and say even when they privately pray can be considered continuous relational milieux for negotiating and determining the ‘right’ ethical norms of the Christian Orthodox tradition
Indigenous Decolonization of Western Notions of Time and History through Literary and Visual Arts
No full textSince the early colonial period, indigenous peoples around the globe have been framed as being anchored in the past with the intent to leave them outside of history. This meant assigning lesser value to their forms of life and thought than to those of the West. In response to this strategic misrepresentation, indigenous peoples reached for their own notions of history and time. Thus, history and time become a highly contested terrain. In this essay, we explore some of the strategies used by two indigenous communities to decolonize Western representations of these groups. One of the case studies looks at how, in his 1958 novel Things Fall Apart, Igbo Anglophone writer Chinua Achebe deploys narrative time to challenge the Hegelian notion of sub-Saharan Africa as being ‘outside of history.’ On the other side of the globe, contemporary Maya artists use their ancestral philosophies of time that included the coexistence of multiple temporalities, as a way to challenge the universality of Western ideas of progressive time, and thus of Western constructions of history. Through the literary and the visual, the Igbo and the Maya decolonize normative representations of time in their efforts to re-inscribe their place in global history

It has two parts: first, it presents and discusses how the term ‘culture’ is used within Surveillance Studies, an emerging transdisciplinary field combining research from social and political sciences as well as cultural studies and the humanities, and highlights the works of Torin Monahan and David Lyon in particular. Second, it puts forward a set of arguments why any reflection on surveillance must not ignore the cultural perspective

Durch die Kombination von Archivdokumenten, Presseberichten, Erhebungsdaten und Zeitzeug_innen-Interviews stellt dieses Buch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Jugendforschung in den Feldern Politik und Kultur dar.In her analysis of the political and cultural activity of Yugoslavs born between 1954 and 1969, the author contends that there was a genuine support for a more liberal and democratic version of socialism, due to the decentralized nature and diplomatic positioning of Yugoslavia. Three main characteristics defined their outlook: economic and political crisis, internationalist and European aspirations, and new understanding of what it meant to be a Yugoslav citizen. With its combination of archival sources, press materials, public surveys, and oral history interviews, the book offers an important contribution to research on youth agency in politics and culture

Remembering the Holocaust in a Global Age vereint zahlreiche disziplinäre Richtungen – von Literatur- und Filmwissenschaften über das Feld der Holocaust-Bildung bis zur Darstellung des Holocausts in Museen. Der Sammelband positioniert sich dabei im Spannungsverhältnis einer zunehmenden Transnationalisierung der Erforschung von Erinnerungskulturen bei gleichzeitig bestehender Bedeutung des Nationalstaats in der Hervorbringung und Verbreitung erinnerungskultureller Praktiken. Darauf aufbauend versucht der Sammelband unterschiedliche national gefasste Erinnerungskulturen in ihrem Verhältnis zu lokalen und globalen Perspektiven zu verstehen. Während es dem Sammelband sehr gut gelingt, die Varietät literarischer, architektonischer, visueller und schauspielerischer Repräsentationen des Holocausts darzustellen, hätte der Band allerdings davon profitiert, wenn die Bedeutung der „entanglements“, also der erinnerungskulturellen Verflechtungen, stärker theoretisch verfolgt worden wäre, um schließlich die Artikel besser in einen Gesamtzusammenhang zu setzen.The extensive volume Entangled Memories. Remembering the Holocaust in a Global Age integrates manifold disciplinary backgrounds – from architecture, literary and film studies to ‘Holocaust Education’ and its musealization. The volume positions itself between the tension of an increasing transnationalism in the field of memory studies and the persistence of the nation state to define commemorative practices in opposition to a globalized Holocaust memory. The edited volume thus aims at depicting different national remembrance cultures in their relation to supra- and subnational perspectives. While the volume successfully displays the multitude of literary, architectural, visual and theatre representations of the Holocaust, the meaning of “entanglement” could have been followed more profoundly to bind the different articles together theoretically
