Earthly Indigeneity: The Cognitive and Ethical Implications of a Disregarded Cosmic Occurence
No full textIn any form, ‘being indigenous’ has a relational signification. Therefore, what consequences might there be for a conceptualization of indigenism that recognizes the commonality of our being indigenous to the Earth? Could we think of each instance of this common tendency to indigenize the Earth as a vernacularization of a universal inclination to produce indigeneity? In this vein, could we infer that indigenization is nothing but the spatial projection of a universal human inclination to engender culture? These questions and their implications could have a substantial impact on how we conceive of the relationship between indigeneity and space. Taking the idea of ‘earthly indigeneity’ seriously means reading every place as an epitome of processive threads interwoven through other places and, potentially, originating from every part of the earth. If so considered, the ‘fact’ of indigeneity becomes the result of a dynamic process carried out through a spectrum of planetary semiotic connections, and guided by responsible cognitive action. ‘Ought’ and ‘is,’ the cognitive and the ethical, materiality and immateriality, local and global, can be seen to intermingle within indigeneity in a transformative orbit around the continually self-respatializing life of culture that could be, semiotically speaking, a veritable form of ‘renewable energy.
The Representation of Dataveillance in Visual Media: Subjectification and Spatialization of Digital Surveillance Practices
No full textSurveillance as a practice of observation is connected to metaphors that stress optical aspects referring to photographic or filming techniques. For example, films that deal with surveillance often make statements about the quality of images obtained through surveillance, and thereby influence the perception of film itself as a visual medium. However, the current ubiquity of surveillance as a social-ordering process is mainly based on the architecture of technologies designed to allow for surveillance as a form of data collection, which is known as dataveillance. Our main focus here is to explore the representation of dataveillance in visual media despite the actual “de-visualization” of digital surveillance practices. We carve out an analytical framework that locates some of the rhetoric of dataveillance within visual media (film, documentary, computer games) by determining dominant cultural interpretations. In doing so, we investigate the extent to which digital surveillance is visually spatialized and subjectivized, and how these strategies vary in different manifestations

Überzeugend bietet sie in der Veröffentlichung ihrer an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt verfassten, literaturwissenschaftlichen Dissertation eine Analyse anglo-amerikanischer und europäischer Romane. Sie zeigt dabei, inwiefern das Konzept ‚Heimat‘ als Ort der Sicherheit und Überschaubarkeit — wenngleich nur noch vorübergehend und unfixiert — relevant bleibt, und dass die Kneipen, Bars und Clubs in ihrem Korpus diese Funktion erfüllen.In Kneipen, Bars und Clubs. Postmoderne Heimat- und Identitätskontruktionen in der Literatur — the published version of her dissertation, which was written at the Technische Universität Darmstadt — Vanessa Geuen uses an interdisciplinary approach to bring together postmodernity and Heimat. In her analysis of a corpus of Anglo-American and European novels, she argues convincingly that Heimat as a secure and ‘manageable’ place of belonging remains a relevant concept in literary analysis, even if it has lost the immutability that used to characterize it, and that the pubs, bars, and clubs in her corpus fulfill that function

Transforming the Global Political & Economic Order ruft die Verbindung von Kritischer Theorie und Krisen in Erinnerung. Elf Beiträge prominenter Protagonist_innen Kritischer Theorie zeigen auf, dass und wie politische, ökonomische oder rechtliche Krisen Kritische Theorie notwendig machen und wie diese eine Grundlage zur Erklärung und Bekämpfung der aktuellen mehrdimensionalen Krise bereitstellen kann. Dabei wird Kritische Theorie auch einer Selbstkritik unterzogen. In mehreren Aufsätzen zeigt der Band, dass diese sich gegenüber anderen Ansätzen, wie etwa feministischer oder postkolonialer Theorie öffnen muss, um angemessene Diagnosen für und Antworten auf aktuelle Krisen darstellen zu können. Ebenso plädiert der Band dafür, an dem Kernanliegen einer materialistischen Kritik festzuhalten und diese mit „neueren“ Ansätze zu ergänzen, gleichwohl nicht durch sie zu ersetzen.The volume Critical Theory in Critical Times. Transforming the Global Political & Economic Order, edited by Penelope Deutscher and Cristina Lafont, re-emphasizes the link between critical theory and crisis. Eleven contributions by prominent scholars of critical theory show how political, economic or legal crises make critical theory necessary and how it can serve to explain and critically address the current multiple crises. In doing so, critical theory is undergoing a selfcritique. That, in order to provide accurate diagnoses and responses to current crises, critical theory has to open for different approaches, such as feminist or postcolonial theory, is one outcome of several essays in the volume. At the same time there is a plea for sticking to the core concepts of materialist critique that should not be replaced but rather complemented by these “newer” approaches

Wie hat sich das Wissen um die Kolonialzeit und den Genozid in Namibia gewandelt? Welche Kontinuitäten zeigen sich in der Geschichtsschreibung der DDR und BRD mit Blick auf (post-)koloniale Wissensformationen? Diesen Fragen geht Christiane Bürger in Deutsche Kolonialgeschichte(n) nach. Darin rekonstruiert sie eine bewegte Ge-schichte der umkämpften Kolonialhistoriografie nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, in deren Mit-telpunkt (Um-)Deutungen des deutschen Genozids an den Herero und Nama (1904-1908) stehen. Auf der Grundlage verschiedenartiger Texte und Medien analysiert sie akademische und populäre Wissenstraditionen, die über Disziplinen, Epochen- und Staatengrenzen hinaus in DDR und BRD zirkulierten.In what ways have historians in both German states dealt with the history of colonial Namibia? Which continuities become evident within the historiographies of the GDR and the FRG, specifically regarding (post-)colonial epistemologies? These questions are addressed by Christiane Bürger in Deutsche Kolonialgeschichte(n), in which she reconstructs the dynamic and challenging history of the colonial historiography after the Second World War. Her focus is on the various and varying interpretations of imperial Germany’s colonial genocide com-mitted against the Herero and Nama (1904 to 1908). Based on an analysis of diverse texts and media she shows how academic and popular traditions of knowledge have circulated and transformed across disciplinary, epochal, and national borders.
