    Our Neurotic Culture, Reclaimed

    Get PDF
The mission of this essay collection is to uproot neurosis from its original medical and psychoanalytical bedrock and embed it within contemporary critical cultural and literary discussions. Through reading neurosis in culture and fiction, it tests its subversive potential for stretching the boundaries of normalcy. The eight chapters encompass an impressive range of texts, and a sizable portion thereof investigate neurosis in a post-colonial context, especially through the work of Frantz Fanon. Still, it is the chapters that decipher a poetics of neurosis in political discourses of neoliberal governmentality and right-wing populism that deliver an important interpretative and culturally relevant punch. Overall, A Poetics of Neurosis paves new roads for the medical humanities and delivers successfully on its goal to disturb notions of normalcy and deviation in our global cultural climate

To Copy, To Impress, To Distribute: The Start of European Printing

    No full text
In order to distribute our thoughts and feelings, we must make intelligible and distributable copies of them. From approximately 1375 to 1450, certain Europeans started fully mechanized replication of texts and images, based on predecessor “smaller” technologies. What they started became the most powerful means for the distribution, storage, and retrieval of knowledge in history, up until the invention of digital means. We have scant information about the initiation of print technologies in the period up to Gutenberg, and the picture of Gutenberg that we have has become a great deal more complicated than hitherto. There has not been, however, an approach to the “pre-printing” period in terms of the history of idea or intellectual history. After a brief survey of established approaches, this essay argues that distribution by impression, or print, is bound up with ancient metaphors for understanding communication by the making of multiples. I suggest that there is a rich field of study for printing history in the sophisticated concepts of reality that medieval and late Scholastic philosophy developed. These concepts helped to express and develop a desire or need for communication that led to the technology of replicating texts and images for wide and continued distribution

Contested Memories and the Role of Emotions in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe: Emotions and Memory Politics in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe

The multi- and interdisciplinary volume Disputed Memory. Emotions and Memory Politics in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe provides a variety of case studies to display the complexity and specificity of disputed pasts in this region. By trying to overcome a methodological nationalism and a “representation bias” in the study of memory, the volume aims at understanding the mediation and transmission of memories in their social contexts. Furthermore, the authors integrate the role of emotions in processes of memory making and politics – at first sight a new and interesting approach. While the volume successfully displays transnational memory movements in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the analysis of emotions in the assembled texts could have benefitted from integrating methods and theories from the already rich sociological and historical literature on the study of emotions

Cyberbullying Policies: a Long Way from Ideas to Practices

The monograph Protecting Children Online?: Cyberbullying Policies of Social Media Companies, written by the media scholar Tijana Milosevic, investigates the controversies of the anticyberbullying policies, elaborated and implemented by social media companies (such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Ask.fm etc.). Milosevic inspects the public debates around highprofile cyberbullying accidents and subsequent legal regulations. She focuses on the companies’ corporate documentation addressing this issue and shares the results of her interviews with social media e-safety experts and NGO representatives. This book puts cyberbullying in a broader context of the various contradictions, such as censorship and freedom of speech, state control and industry self-regulation, e-safety and data privacy. Based on her analysis, Tijana Milosevic concludes that it would be extremely challenging to study and prevent cyberbullying without a clear understanding of its context. The book’s detailed focus on legal regulations could be found rather excessive; however spotlighting the crucial differences between the ‘ideal’ corporate principles and its practical implementations surely deserves the attention of media and cultural scholars

The Order of Things and People: Vertical Non-State Surveillance

    No full text
Socially produced security concerns underlie the proliferation of urban surveillance practices through informal policing. Neighborhood watch and neighborhood patrol initiatives have recently mushroomed in several countries in Europe, spurred by a culture of insecurity that has continuously and globally grown since the seventies. Such practices signal the intensification of struggles for social control and order in the urban space, but also the capillarization of surveillance, devolved from waning state institutions onto the citizenry. Neighborhood patrols police the urban landscape, blame suspect Others for spoiling it, and enforce a particular aesthetic order which, in turn, legitimizes social hierarchies along nation, race, gender, and class lines. Through an empirically informed analysis of the security practices enacted by a neighborhood patrol in the peripheries of Rome, I trace the genealogies and cultural tenets of what I call vertical non-state surveillance as a form of informal policing of subaltern Others in the urban space. I explore the ways in which this form of surveillance meets neo-liberal conceptions of citizenship, becoming productive of new subjectivities and socialities, and argue that such forms of surveillance need to be linked with the political economies and the materialities of the urban spaces in which they emerge

The Ubiquitous View: Surveillance, Imagination, and the Power of Being Seen

    No full text
The _Essay discusses the relation between surveillance and imagination. It unfolds the argument that surveillance as a form of (political) oppression is necessarily centering on a decisionistic act of the individual who has to opt for deviant or conformist behavior under conditions of obvious social and political surveillance. Today, however, especially due to processes of an ongoing digitalization, surveillance is becoming a mode of self-expression, experiencing a shift towards its habituation and normalization within social reality. This development marks a clear difference from the classic habituation of surveillance as estranged, governmental practice. What seems to remain intact with regard to contemporary concepts of surveillance is the importance of the view and the meaning of surveillance as a politics of the image and the imaginary

Medium and Small Form. A Volume on the Long History of a Seemingly Young Genre

Michael Gamper, Ruth Mayer and the contributors to Kurz and Knapp address the currently urgent quest for a poetics of brevity through a media-historical analysis of the small form since the 17th century. Instead of solely focusing on text messages, Twitter, Snapchat and Vine, the analysis covers early modern apophthegma, Nietzsche’s aphorisms and early cinema through to Twitter feeds and cell phone videos with a special focus on their medial embedding. The work breaks through the fixation on shortness to shed light on the respective practices involved in this form’s production as the origins of a poetics specific to the small form

Experience of Multiplicity, Multiplicity’s Experience. From a Critical Genealogy of Homo Economicus to a Contemporary Machine Phenomenology

    Get PDF
In Experience. New Foundations for the Human Sciences, sociologist Scott Lash addresses the human sciences in general. He proposes a new perspective on the methodological status of experience. His book covers a vast array of fields and topics: rooted in sociology and cultural studies, Lash takes his readers on a profound, sometimes swift journey from Greek antiquity to the Methodenstreit in 19th century sociology, from Kant’s transcendentalism to Arendt’s political thought and from the rise of cybernetics to Chinese art and aesthetics – always focussed on the historical conditions, role, and function of experience. Lash’s aim is twofold: firstly he is presenting a critique of the homo economicus, the currently dominant ideology of the Western world, by a genealogy of objective experience and formalism in the social sciences and economics. Secondly, he develops, with Aristotle, Hannah Arendt, William James but also Chinese thought, a perspective on subjective experience suitable for our present
