Robert Walser’s Topicality and the Descriptive Turn
No full textThe article examines the relation between the sudden rise of public interest in the Swiss writer Robert Walser at the turn of the millennium and the simultaneous emergence of Latourian-inspired methodological discussions in the field of literary studies. In light of the striking commonalities between Walser’s literary practice and Bruno Latour’s research strategy, the article claims that Latour’s project should not just be conceived as a possible source of inspiration to the humanities but as a configuration deeply enmeshed in aesthetic devices from the very outset. Furthermore, the great fascination of Walser among contemporary writers and readers stems from the fact that his writings offer new ways of reading that are exempted from the duty of suspicious interpretation and structure-building efforts, highly relevant to the current deadlock regarding critique in literary studies, but also —owing to Latour’s undoing of the divide between art and science —in academia as such. How we are encouraged to meet a text does not leave unaffected how we tend to meet the world, the attentive and descriptive low-key attitude practiced by Walser potentially boosting Latour’s call for an extensive transformation of matters of fact into matters of concern
Does “Critical Composition” (Still) Exist? Reflections on the Material of New Music
No full textAlthough the term “critical composition” was paradigmatically used by Nicolaus A. Huber in his text “Kritisches Komponieren” from 1972, one can argue that the early atonality and dodecaphony of the Second Viennese School — and their theorization by Adorno — laid the foundation for composers who perceived their work as a product of critical thinking. Following an Adornian rationale, early atonal composition would be viewed as an immanently negative and aesthetically indrawn last bastion against the historical tendency of the material in Western societies, only pre-conceptually connected to society, whereas many post-war composers turned toward analytical or politically committed forms of composition that introduced music as a means of critically reflecting on the interrelations between musical and social spheres. By outlining the emancipatory potential of John Cage’s music philosophy, I want to counterpoint the conventional notion of “critical composition” as a phenomenon within the post-war avant-garde, which is deeply rooted in the European intellectual tradition of a sovereign subject. Against this background, the critical potentials of contemporary conceptions of composition “as an expanded field of artistic practice encompassing a range of different media and symbolic relationships” (Barrett 2016) can be grasped beyond the ideals of work autonomy and material progress
A Coordinated Europeanization of the Comics Industry through Distribution: The Politics of the Global Journey of Astérix and Tintin through the Strategic Distribution of their Magazines and Contents in the 1960s
No full textResearchers have usually focused on the Tintin and Astérix series’ global book diffusion through translation. However, little has been discussed about the distribution policies of the comics magazine format, a key factor in the development of European comics. This paper will consider the continentalization of western European national comics industries via the intra-EEC networking of distribution channels during the 1960s. By facilitating the exchange of comics features in the Franco-Belgian area, publishers such as Casterman, Le Lombard, and Dargaud ensured the rise of the industry and of the products they wanted to disseminate. Contemplating the motivations of publishers this article will delve deeper into the emergence of cooperative and competitive distribution channels among national publishers and between countries. Through the archives of Casterman and primary sources this article intends to contribute to a greater understanding of how the carefully planned distribution network of comics influenced the development of the European industry as a whole
A Socio-Political Approach to Modernist Architecture in Soviet Lithuania

Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der engen Beziehung zwischen der Gemeinschaft der Architekten in Litauen, dessen geschichtlichen, urbanen und ethnischen Kulturerbe sowie den nationalen Rahmenbedingungen. Nach einem einführendem Überblick über den sowjetischen Modernismus, geht der Autor detailliert auf Aspekte der Industrialisierung, der städtischen und ländlichen Entwicklungsplanung, des Wohnungsbaus und der Vernetzung der Konsumkultur ein. Die Analyse der Gebäude und kommunalen Strukturen deckt dabei mittels eines gesellschaftspolitischen Ansatzes die Spannung zwischen Standardisierung und Individualisierung auf. Das Werk zeichnet sich somit als wesentliche Quelle für die Geschichte der Architektur sowie die interdisziplinäre Forschung im Gebiet der Kulturwissenschaft, Geschichte, Urbanistik und der Architektursoziologie aus.The book Baltic Modernism. Architecture and Housing in Soviet Lithuania is a detailed analysis of the characteristics of modernist architecture in Soviet Lithuania. It emphasizes the close relationship between the architectural community in Lithuania and the historical, urban, and ethnic heritage as well as the national landscape. Starting from a broad discussion of Soviet Modernism, the author zooms in on specific aspects: industrialization, urban and rural planning, housing, and the consumer-cultural network. The buildings and urban structures are analyzed using a socio-political approach pointing to tensions between standardization and customization. The book is an important source for historians of architecture as well as for interdisciplinary research in cultural, history, urban studies and sociology of architecture.
 
In Search of Afropeans: A Journey Across Black Europe
No full textDer Fotograf, Schriftsteller und Blogger Johny Pitts macht sich in seinem Buch Afropean. Notes from Black Europe auf die Suche nach Afroeuropäern. Seine Reise führt ihn als Backpacker durch Europa in Städte wie Paris, Lissabon und Stockholm, in denen er Menschen begegnet, die afrikanisch und europäisch zugleich sind. Pitts Reisebericht enthält neben zahlreichen Schilderungen von Begegnungen und Beobachtungen auch Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien, die den Alltag von Afroeuropäerinnen und Afroeuropäern zeigen. Der Autor macht afroeuropäische Identitäten durch das Zusammenspiel von Bericht und visuellen Eindrücken nicht nur sichtbar, sondern zeigt ihre Vielfalt und Dynamik als Teil von Europa. Außerdem setzt er Impulse für zukünftige Forschung mit Fokus auf grenzüberschreitende und transnationale Identitäten, die ein Teil von Europa sind und dieses mitgestalten.In his book Afropean: Notes from Black Europe, the photographer, writer, and blogger Johny Pitts sets out in search of Afropeans. His journey takes him as a backpacker through Europe to cities such as Paris, Lisbon, and Stockholm, where he meets people who are African and European at the same time. Pitts’ travelogue contains numerous descriptions of encounters and observations as well as black-and-white photographs showing the everyday life of Afropeans. The author not only makes Afropean identities visible through the interplay of report and visual impressions, but also shows their diversity and dynamics as part of Europe. Get PDFAnstatt auf eine einheitliche Definition oder Darstellung des Essaygenres abzuzielen, besteht das Hauptziel dieses Bandes darin, einige der sehr unterschiedlichen Formen und Transformationen in den Blick zu nehmen, in denen der Essay im Laufe verschiedener Epochen in unterschiedlichen Kulturen aufgetreten ist. Dabei gelingt es den meisten Beiträgen, mit sehr aufschlussreichen Einblicken in den Essay aufzuwarten und das Genre von alternativen, nichtkanonischen Perspektiven aus zu beleuchten, z.B. wenn auch solche Texte als Essays gefasst werden, die traditionellerweise nicht unter diesen Gattungsbegriff fallen. Der Band als Ganzer hätte dabei jedoch klarer und übersichtlicher strukturiert werden können.Rather than aiming at a unified definition or portrayal of the essay genre, this edited volume seeks to investigate some of the various forms and transformations in which the essay has appeared throughout different time periods and cultures. Indeed, most articles come up with highly significant insights about the essay and succeed in illuminating the genre from alternative and non-canonical perspectives, e.g. by describing certain texts as essays which so far have not been subsumed under this label. Yet the compilation could have tackled the diverse fields it seeks to cover in a more representative manner

In vielen politischen Theorien steht die Stimme als die Quintessenz der politischen Entscheidungsfreiheit im Mittelpunkt. Das Schweigen wird häufig als das Gegenteil der Stimme verstanden und wird daher häufig negativ interpretiert, als mangelnde Entscheidungsfreiheit oder als Folge von Ausgrenzung, Gewalt oder Unterdrückung. Ein zentrales Ziel dieses Buches ist es, eine kritische Distanz zu diesem reduzierenden Verständnis von Stille zu schaffen, statt es positiv zu interpretieren und es von seiner untergeordneten Position gegenüber dem gesprochenen Wort als seiner eigenen Form politischer Handlungsfähigkeit zu emanzipieren. Obwohl nicht alle Einzelbeiträge dieses ehrgeizige Ziel in gleichem Maße erreichen, weist der Band im Allgemeinen eine kohärente und überzeugende argumentative Richtung auf, in der Stille nicht als Ausschluss von politischer Subjektivität, sondern als konstitutiv dafür verstanden wird. The publication’s focus – silence – is commonly understood as the opposite of voice, and is therefore often interpreted negatively, as a lack of agency, or as the result of exclusion or oppression. Here, a central aim is to create a critical distance to this reductive understanding of silence, and instead to interpret it positively, emancipating it from its subsidiary position vis-à-vis the spoken word, as its own modality of political agency. Although not all individual contributions achieve this ambitious aim to the same extent, the volume generally presents a convincing argumentative direction in which silence is conceptualized not as exclusion from, but rather as constitutive of, political subjectivity. By approaching the concept from different disciplinary groundings, and working from a variety of historical and contemporary case studies, the contributors invite their readers to consider silence as a force of political change

Es ist anzunehmen, dass die Islamisten unter diesen Intellektuellen maßgeblich zur Entstehung der Islamischen Revolution von 1979 beigetragen haben – sowohl mit ihrem Aktivismus als auch mit der Verbreitung ihrer Ideen. Einer dieser Intellektuellen war Ahmad Fardid (1912-1994), ein iranischer Philosoph, der sich anti-moderne europäische Philosophien angeeignet hatte, um eine radikale Form des Islamismus zu propagieren.
