Ways of Creating a Better Understanding of the Inherent Informational Contents of Photographs
No full textIm Tagungsband Eine Fotografie. Über die transdisziplinären Möglichkeiten der Bildforschung, herausgegeben von Irene Ziehe und Ulrich Hägele, stellen Autoren mit unterschiedlichen, durchaus auch nicht-akademischen Hintergründen ihre Forschungsergebnisse vor. In 23 Beiträgen widmen sie sich interdisziplinär dem Themenfeld Fotografie und Bildanalyse. Anhand der Skizzierung methodologischer Ansätze sowie konkreter Deutungsbeispiele wird praxisnah veranschaulicht, wie Fotografien, deren Gebrauchs- und Entstehungskontext weitestgehend unbekannt ist, analysiert und gedeutet werden. Damit schafft das Werk die Grundlage für ein besseres Verständnis der immanenten Informationsgehalte von Bildern. Im Zeitalter der Wissensgesellschaft, das sich durch eine verstärkte Nutzung neuer Medien und damit auch von Fotos auszeichnet, ist die Fähigkeit, letztere kritisch zu befragen und deuten zu können essenziell. Das vorliegende Werk ist eine Anregung, die neugierig auf eine Intensivierung dahingehender wissenschaftlicher Forschungen macht und für die damit einhergehenden öffentlichen Diskurse sensibilisiert.In the conference volume Eine Fotografie. Über die transdisziplinären Möglichkeiten der Bildforschung, edited by Irene Ziehe and Ulrich Hägele, authors with various professional backgrounds, academic as well as non-academic, present their research results. 23 contributions are dedicated to photography and scientific picture analysis on an interdisciplinary basis. By outlining methodological approaches as well as giving examples of interpretations, the authors demonstrate how photographs with unknown design and contexts of origin are analyzed and interpreted. Thereby they provide a common foundation for a better understanding of the inherent informational contents of photographs. In the age of the knowledge society, described best by the strengthened use of new media as well as photographs, the ability to critically scrutinize and interpret the latter is vital. This publication is an inspiration arousing curiosity for the intensification of scientific research in this field of study and raising awareness for the need to introduce these new aspects into the public discourse
Wanderlust or Wanderlost: Gender, Mobility, and Sympathy in Late-Eighteenth-Century Literature
Get PDFIngrid Horrocks Women Wanderers and the Writing of Mobility, 1784-1814 lässt die traditionellen Figurationen des männlichen Reisenden und Entdeckers hinter sich und analysiert sowohl die thematischen als auch formalen Repräsentationen der ‚widerwilligen Wanderin‘ in Werken weiblicher Schriftstellerinnen. Sie bettet dazu die Arbeiten von Charlotte Smith, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Wollstonecraft und Frances Burney in den größeren Kontext der Mobility und Sympathy Studies und betont zwei wichtige gegenderte Privilegien, die der Mehrheit der Frauen nicht zur Verfügung standen: das Reisen als eine befreiende Suche nach individueller Identität, und Sympathie als ein ethisches Produkt von losgelöster Beobachtung. Indem Horrocks die fehlende Sympathie in den schmerzvollen, endlosen Bewegungen von Frauen minutiös aufzeigt, gewinnt sie nicht nur Erkenntnisse über den sozialen und psychologischen Status der Frau in Großbritannien im späten achtzehnten Jahrhundert, sondern auch über die Rolle des Reisens in der britischen Literatur allgemein.Departing from traditional figurations of the male traveler-explorer, Ingrid Horrocks’s Women Wanderers and the Writing of Mobility, 1784-1814 analyzes women writers’ thematic as well as formal representations of the ‘reluctant woman wanderer’ figure. Situating the writings of Charlotte Smith, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Frances Burney in the larger context of mobility and sympathy studies, Horrocks emphasizes two important gendered privileges unavailable to the majority of women: traveling as a liberating quest for individual identity and sympathy as an ethical product of detached observation. As Horrocks meticulously illustrates the absence of sympathy or freedom in a woman’s painfully endless movement, she sheds light on not only women’s social and psychological status in late-eighteenth-century Britain but also the role of traveling in British literature at large

Eine Topographie, herausgegeben von Stefan Bronner und Björn Weyand, arbeitet mit einem weiten Begriff von ‚Weltliteratur‘ und nutzt ihn einerseits als Ausdruck der Betonung eines auf der Ebene der Schauplätze topographisch diversen Werk und andererseits zur Beschreibung einer ambivalenten Form der literarischen Welterschließung, die zwischen Fakt/Fiktion, Leben/Literatur, Selbstreferenz/Kontext stattfindet. Es werden zudem die bisher in der Kracht-Forschung weniger beachteten ‚Nebenwerke‘ (v.a. Reisetexte und/oder in Ko-Autorschaft entstandene Texte) stärker ins Licht gerückt und in ihrer Verbindung zum Romanwerk betrachtet.The edited volume Christian Krachts Weltliteratur. Eine Topographie by Stefan Bronner and Björn Weyand (ed.) uses an expansive concept of world literature to describe an author’s work which includes more and more diverse topographies in its texts, and which refers to the world in an ambivalent manner, as taking place between fact and fiction, life and literature, self-reference and context. Furthermore, Kracht’s travel writing and co-authored texts are brought into focus and can now be observed as being part of and interacting with his novels

Hanichs Argumentation, durch mehrere vorhergehende Studien gestützt, diskutiert insbesondere das Lachen, den Schrei und die Wut und präsentiert eine Typologie der kollektiven Betrachtung. Das Buch beweist, dass das Verhalten der Zuschauer und die Infrastrukturen des Kinos zu unserer Interpretation sowie Bewertung eines Films beitragen und es ein anhaltend einzigartiges Erlebnis im Kino bestehen bleibt. Heraus kommt eine unverzichtbare Lektüre für alle, die sich für Filmrezeption interessieren.In The Audience Effect, Julian Hanich examines the effects people have on each other’s experiences inside the movie theater. Through a phenomenological approach, the author creates powerful descriptions of these experiences and the possible ways they might affect reception of the movie. Hanich’s argumentation is sustained by several previous studies while he discusses in particular the laugh, the cry, and the anger, and presents a typology of collective viewing. The book shows that the spectators’ behavior and cinema infrastructures contribute to our interpretation and evaluation of a movie, as well as an ongoing unique experience in the movie theater. Travelling Media Structures: Adaptation and Demarcation in China\u27s Public SARS Discourse
No full textThe flow of communication structures across various media formats can be traced back to the printing press culture of early modern Europe, where three distinct media features appeared: disagreement, sensationalism, and self-reference. These features continue to characterize health communication in today’s online media (Bogen 2011; 2013). This study investigates whether these media structures also characterize contemporary health communication in non-Western countries like China, which are undergoing a modernization process. By taking European structures of healthcare communication as a point of reference, I will analyze how Chinese healthcare communication differs from its European counterpart. This paper takes SARS (the first globally emerging infectious disease of the 21st century) as a case study. While the SARS discourse illustrates the existence of these communication structures in the Chinese media and indicates some convergence between East and West, it is clear that these media structures have been adapted to a specifically Chinese cultural program of modernization. Moreover, I will identify ‘non-European’ structures that can be explained by China’s specific cultural background, and explore the processes of transfer and demarcation that occur when media structures are adapted across cultures

Get PDFBeyond Balkanism: The Scholarly Politics of Region Making ist nicht nur ein weiteres Buch über den weit verbreiteten, stereotypen Diskurs über den Balkan. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem geistigen Interesse an der Region ab dem 19. Jahrhundert. Diese umfangreiche Studie konzentriert sich darauf, wie verschiedene Generationen von Wissenschaftlern den Balkan definierten, um daraufhin die politische Nutzung von akademischen Projekten zu untersuchen. Durch die Konzentration auf intraregionale geopolitische Interessen und grenzüberschreitende Interaktionen, verändert Mishkova die übliche Wahrnehmung des Balkans als postkolonialen Raum. Mit einem neuen Ansatz für den komplizierten Begriff des Balkanismus und einem großen Korpus kritischer Literatur bildet diese Forschung die Grundlage für die weitere Entwicklung der Area Studies.The historical textbook Beyond Balkanism: The Scholarly Politics of Region Making isn‘t just another book on the popular stereotypical discourse about the Balkans. Rather, it is a critical examination of the intellectual interest in the region from the 19th century onward. Diana Mishkova‘s extensive study concentrates on the ways various generations of scholars defined the Balkans, in order to inspect political usage of academic projects. By focusing on intra-regional geopolitical stakes and cross-border interactions, Mishkova changes the usual perception of the Balkans as a postcolonial space. With a fresh approach to the complicated notion of balkanism and a more than respectable corpus of critical literature, this research builds a basis for the further development of Area Studies in general
