Locating Early Modern Orientalism: Epistemology, Empire, and European Consciousness
Orientalism as conceived by Edward Said has had a lasting influence and it has produced notions that scholars from humanities are still working to nuance and clarify. The Dialectics of Orientalism in Early Modern Europe, edited by Marcus Keller and Javier Irigoyen-García, a contribution to a subfield that is still understudied, challenges the view that Orientalism of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was similar to that of the two centuries that followed. Constructing their approach on the Hegelian theory of thesis – antithesis – synthesis, the authors highlight the fundamental differences that were in place in the engagements of the humanists of the period with the Oriental Other. The authors cover vast geographical areas and frontiers as well as topics such as empire building, epistemology of the Orient, and the formation of an imaginary Europe
Initiators and Observers: How Reporters Discovered the World
Literary Journalism is a popular topos within media studies. Michael Homberg’s dissertation Reporter-Streifzüge: Metropolitane Nachrichtenkultur und die Wahrnehmung der Welt now equips the term with a comparative genesis that is characterized by the history of the reportage. For Homberg, the metropolis, the local, and the global are pivotal points in this amalgamation of fact and fiction in the reportage. His research is particularly convincing due to a broad selection of case studies and the highlighting of self-referential media societies
Doing Fieldwork in Revolutionary Times
Ihre Buchkapitel “invite a rethinking and open up our political-ethical imagination” (S. 16) und zeigen so auf, was Anthropologie in einer „zutiefst ungleichen Welt“ tun kann und was nicht (S. 17).In her second monograph, Giving to God: Islamic Charity in Revolutionary Times, anthropologist Amira Mittermaier illustrates the complex meanings and definitions of doing fieldwork in times when Egyptians witnessed a glimpse of change or at least heard about it. She analyzes completely overlooked charitable spaces and life stories that also exist at the center of Egyptians’ aspirations and anxieties. Beyond exploring the Tahrir Square of the revolutionaries and the mega-architectural projects that embody the counterrevolutionary agenda, Mittermaier meets with donors and recipients of different Islamic modes, ethics, and temporalities of giving. Her book chapters “invite a rethinking and open up our political-ethical imagination” (p. 16) of what anthropology can and cannot do in a “profoundly unequal world” (p. 17)
Comparing Better. Kaisa Kaakinen on the Value of the Comparative Method at the Beginning of the 21st Century
Kaisa Kaakinens Comparative Literature and the Historical Imaginary. Reading Conrad, Weiss, Sebald versucht sich an gerade dieser doppelten Besinnung – „The form of this book reflects the activity it studies“ (S. 25) – und setzt damit gleich zu Beginn auch explizit den Rahmen für eine komplexe, vielschichtige Arbeit. It is hardly surprising that a dissertation in Comparative Literature compares different authors and their works. The fact that the comparison is decidedly a reflection on comparative methodology is not quite so self-evident. The claim to be able to say something new about each of the analysed texts with help of their deliberate constellation comes with the expectation of a better understanding of the practice of comparing itself. Kaisa Kaakinen\u27s Comparative Literature and the Historical Imaginary. Reading Conrad, Weiss, Sebald tries its hand at precisely this double reflection - "The form of this book reflects the activity it studies" (p. 25) - and thus explicitly sets the framework for a complex, multi-layered work right at the beginning
Cooperation or Non-cooperation? An Attempt to Conceptualize Economic Sanctions in Global Political Conflicts
Das Buch Coercive Sanctions and International Conflicts. The book Coercive Economic Sanctions and International Conflicts: A Sociological Theory by Mark Daniel Jaeger examines the social conditions within sanctions conflicts that lead either to cooperation or non-cooperation. The main assumption of the work is that coercive economic sanctions should be understood as relational, socially constructed facts and that conflicts over sanctions, as discursive conflicts, result from incompatibilities of interest (issue conflicts) or identity (identity conflicts). Based on the premises of Luhmann’s social systems theory and securitization theory, the author creates a theoretical model that seeks to explore the conflicts’ (de-)escalation from a sociological perspective. The study is based on case studies of sanctions conflicts between Mainland China and Taiwan as well as between the US and Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. The research has demonstrated that depending on the combination of different sanctions regimes (positive or negative) and particular sanctions policies of an initiator and the response of an addressee, the conflict may result in further securitization or de-securitization
To Blur the Boundaries of Fiction and Translation
The Fictions of Translation gathers papers from the third Transfiction conference, which took place in Montreal in May 2015. As with the previous publications of the conference series, this volume aims to establish the concept of ‘transfiction’ as the basis of a new subdiscipline in translation studies. The 16 chapters of this collection explore a wide spectrum of ‘translation fictions’ that range from pseudo-translations, (non-)translator and (self-)translator biographies, to the discourse of translation institutions to show the potential of translation and ‘translation fictions’ in providing insights into past or contemporary social and political situations.

Itch.io and the One-Dollar-Game: How Distribution Platforms Affect the Ontology of (Games as) a Medium
The article at hand outlines formal and media ontological implications of digital distribution by analyzing how independent game publishing platform Itch.io enabled ‘the one-dollar game’ as an emergent form of cultural expression. Production studies, particularly with reference to film, have investigated how new modes of production have shaped emergent genres and forms like chase scenes and location shooting; this article makes a similar case for distribution modalities. For that purpose, studies and creators’ accounts on the distribution of literature (Carr, 2015), film (Meusy, 2002) and music (Anderton 2019) are adapted. Characteristic software affordances of Itch.io are analyzed to determine how the platform frames the selling and advertising of ‘disposable’ games. A corpus of almost 300 one-dollar games was compiled by scraping the Itch.io website. Through a comparative content analysis, several unique microgenres, most of which can only feasibly exist within this product category, as well as performative and simulational aspects of game publishing are studied. The findings are related to ongoing debates about the ontology of (digital) games, thereby connecting the material-semiotic notion of platformization (Helmond, 2015) to cultural production
At the Limits of Transformation? Human Rights Education Between Colonial Conditions and Emancipatory Counter-Projects
The collection of articles titled Critical Human Rights, Citizenship and Democracy Education, Entanglements and Regenerations and published as a part of Bloomsburry’s series on Critical Education revisits some of the numerous engagements with the human rights project and its educational forms. The aim is to draw attention to controversies and a necessary critique of the concept of global pedagogy for human rights, democracy, and citizenship, in order to underline what many critical theorists and specifically post- and decolonial scholars have been stressing for decades: The ongoing suppression of various voices, namely those from the global south, whose perspectives on human rights might disrupt the hegemonic narrative of the global north – a narrative deeply intertwined with racism and colonial violence. Mindful of these entanglements, the authors within the volume probe into the limits of human rights as a critical endeavor and push for answers to the question of whether a critical human rights project is possible
