    Theoretical Studies on Polynuclear {CuII5GdIII} Clusters (n = 4, 2): Towards Understanding Their Large Magnetocaloric Effect

    Density functional theory (DFT) studies on two polynuclear clusters, [CuII5GdIII4O2(OMe)4(teaH)4(O2CC(CH3)3)2(NO3)4] (1) and [Cu5Gd2(OH)4(Br)2-(H2L)2(H3L)2(NO3)2(OH2)4] (2), have been carried out to probe the origin of the large magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The magnetic exchange interactions for 1 and 2 via multiple pathways are estimated using DFT calculations. While the calculated exchange parameters deviate from previous experimental estimates obtained by fitting the magnetic data, the DFT parameter set is found to offer a striking match to the magnetic data for both complexes, highlighting the problem of overparameterization. Magnetostructural correlations for \{Cu?Gd\} pairs have been developed where both the Cu?O?Gd angles and Cu?O?Gd?O dihedral angles are found to significantly influence the magnitude and sign of the exchange constants. The magnitude of the MCE has been examined as a function of the exchange interactions, and clues on how the effect can be enhanced are discussed

    Load Aware Adaptive Scheduling for Energy Efficient Suburban Massive MIMO Networks

    This paper proposes an adaptive scheduling strategy to improve the energy efficiency of massive MIMO. The proposed technique combines a novel adaptive discontinuous transmission (ADTx) and antenna optimization that can optimize the number of active antennas and transmission period such that data can be delivered to users with the minimum power. The proposed ADTx utilizes a DTx principle and adaptive precoding technique selection. On the other hand, antennas optimization is used to relax the number of active antennas once the required period has been calculated. Although massive MIMO is initially designed to utilize the multiplexing users found in dense users scenario, this paper discusses the impact of the proposed technique to low density scenarios, in particular suburban scenario, because major parts of cellular coverage are low density. It will be shown that the proposed scheme provides significant energy efficiency (EE) and QoS improvement that can support green cellular network

    Primary cutaneous lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of diseases. They often remain localized, and they generally have a more indolent course and a better prognosis than lymphomas in other locations. They are highly radiosensitive, and radiation therapy is an important part of the treatment, either as the sole treatment or as part of a multimodality approach. Radiation therapy of primary cutaneous lymphomas requires the use of special techniques that form the focus of these guidelines. The International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group has developed these guidelines after multinational meetings and analysis of available evidence. The guidelines represent an agreed consensus view of the International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group steering committee on the use of radiation therapy in primary cutaneous lymphomas in the modern era

    Mapping water uptake in organic coatings using AFM-IR

    The long-term failure of seemingly intact corrosion resistant organic coatings is thought to occur via the development of ionic transport channels, which spontaneously evolve from hydrophilic regions on immersion, i.e., as a result of localized water uptake. To this end, we investigate water uptake characteristics for industrial epoxy–phenolic can coatings after immersion in deionized water and drying. Moisture sorption and the changing nature of polymer–water interactions are assessed using FTIR for dry and pre-soaked films. More water is found to be absorbed by the pre-soaked coatings on exposure to a humid environment, with a greater degree of hydrogen-bonding between the polymer and water. Furthermore, morphological changes are then correlated to localized water uptake using the AFM-IR technique. Nanoscale softened regions develop on soaking, and these are found to absorb a greater proportion of water from a humid environment

    Fully Automatic Cephalometric Evaluation using Random Forest Regression-Voting

    Cephalometric analysis is commonly used as a standard tool for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The identification of cephalometric landmarks on images of the skull allows the quantification and classification of anatomical abnormalities. In clinical practice, the landmarks are placed manually which is time-consuming and subjective. This work investigates the application of Random Forest regression-voting to fully automatically detect cephalometric landmarks, and to use the identified positions for automatic cephalometric evaluation. Validation experiments on two sets of 150 images show that we achieve an average mean error of 1.6mm - 1.7mm and a successful detection rate of 75% - 85% for a 2mm precision range, and that the accuracy of our automatic cephalometric evaluation is 77% - 79%. This work shows great promise for application to computer-assisted cephalometric treatment and surgery planning

    Does in-utero exposure of antiepileptic drugs lead to failure to reach full cognitive potential?

    A clinical scenario of a young female on 800 mg of sodium valproate (VPA) who has recently failed lamotrigine (LTG) and levetiracetam (LEV) and who is currently planning a pregnancy is presented. Currently available data pertaining to the longer-term development of children exposed to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are reviewed along with considerations around the methodology and interpretation of such research. There is an accumulation of data highlighting significant risks associated with prenatal exposed to VPA, with the level of risk being mediated by dose. The majority of published evidence does not find a significant risk associated with carbamazepine (CBZ) exposure in utero for global cognitive abilities however the evidence for more specific cognitive skills are unclear. Limited data indicate that LTG may be a preferred treatment to VPA in terms of foetal outcome but further evidence is required. Too little data pertaining to LEV exposure is available and a lack of evidence regarding risk of this and other new AEDs should not be interpreted as evidence of safety
