Evaluation of knowledge and perceptions of pharmacy students towards doping and the need for doping education
Background: Despite the need for doping prevention strategies, information about doping awareness among pharmacy professionals is limited. Therefore, developing a pharmacy workforce or specialized pharmacists with expertise in sports pharmacy is a necessity, but also a subject of global health significance.
Objective: Objective of this study was to assess pharmacy student’s knowledge and perceptions of doping and anti-doping in sports and to explore the curricular needs in the field of sports pharmacy.
Methodology: An 18 item questionnaire developed according to World Anti-Doping Code and the FIP Statement on pharmacist’s role against doping in sports was employed to collect data from pharmacy students at Ezhuthachan College of pharmaceutical sciences. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Questionnaires were distributed to 300 pharmacy students, among them 237 students participated in the survey, with a response rate of 79%. respondents said that they were familiar with the word doping were 78%. 39 respondents (16.5%) had attended a lecture about doping, (83%) had not. 222 respondents held the view that it is not fair for the athletes to use prohibited substances to improve their performance were (94%). According to 40 respondents (17%), most common doping violation in India is unintentional doping and 175 respondents (74%) claimed it to be intentional doping. Only a few respondents correctly recognized the WADA- banned drugs. Most of the respondents think that pharmacist should get involved in anti-doping activities for athletes. Many (73 %) are interested to have training for doping.
Conclusion: The study highlights the need to provide pharmacy students with advanced theoretical background and practical training concerning doping
Stability indicating method development and validation for the determination of haloperidol and benzhexol by RP-HPLC
A simple, Accurate, precise method was developed for the simultaneous estimation of the Haloperidol and Benzhexol in Tablet dosage form. The chromatogram was run through Kromasil (250mm 4.6mm, 5µ). Mobile phase containing Buffer and Acetonitrile and methanol in the ratio of 48:52 was pumped through column at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The temperature was maintained at 30°C. The optimized wavelength for Haloperidol and Benzhexol was 220nm. The retention time of Haloperidol and Benzhexol were found to be 2.415 min and 2.820min. %RSD of the Haloperidol and Benzhexol were and found to be 0.6 and 0.2 respectively. %Recover was Obtained as 98.92% and 99.60% for Haloperidol and Benzhexol. LOD, LOQ values were obtained from regression equations of Haloperidol and Benzhexol were 0.42ppm, 1.27ppm and 0.04ppm, 0.14ppm respectively. Regression equation of Haloperidol is y = 24009x + 38704, and of Benzhexol is y = 40558x + 2880. Retention times are decreased and that run time was decreased so the method developed was simple and economical that can be adopted in regular Quality control test in Industrie
Students initiated ADR reporting activity in pharmacy colleges - a survey
ADR monitoring is an important function of many pharmacists working in the clinical field. The aim of this study is to assess the student knowledge about Pharmcovigilance and activities done in ADR centers and to find out the impact of pharmacy student service in ADR monitoring. An 11 item web based questionnaire was developed and employed to collect data from Pharm D students at different colleges in South India. A thorough review was conducted of relevant literature pertaining to knowledge, views, and practices of pharmacy students towards the ADR monitoring and reporting in pharmacy colleges. About 61 students were responded through Google forms. The majority students from Vth year and VIth year Pharm D students of about 67.25% were responded well. About 42.62% responders have the correct knowledge of about Pharmacovigilance. About 77.04% of responders having ADR reporting centres in their colleges or their hospital. Responders of about 75.40% were communicates the reported ADRs to consulting physicians by communicating, during ward rounds or by informing to corresponding department faculties. 86.88% of responders were documented the reported ADR. This study demonstrated that knowledge, attitude and practices towards pharmacovigilance is gradually improving among pharmacy students that may improve the patients’ quality of life by correcting adverse reactions, but unfortunately the actual practice of ADR reporting is still deficient among them
A cross sectional study of polycystic ovarian syndrome among pharmacy students
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder, often complicated by chronic an ovulatory infertility and hyperandrogenism with the clinical manifestation of oligomenorrhoea, hirsutism and acne. The aim of this research is to evaluate polycystic ovarian syndrome which includes sign and symptoms, lifestyle and diet conditions along with their common treatment and self-medication practice for dysmenorrhea among pharmacy students, which are more prone to PCOS
A survey on functioning of male and female with migraine
Migraines are severe, recurring, and painful headaches. The extreme pain have that migraines cause can last for hours or even days. Migraines can follow an aura of sensory disturbances followed by a severe headache that often appears on one side of the head. Objective of the study include; To find out whether male and female are more prone to develop migraine, To evaluate which triggering factors contributes to migraine and To evaluate the people taking OTC for migraine. A Prospective survey will be carried out in 75 peoples using the information’s gathered from students in Pharmacy colleges in Trivandrum. This study provides the prevalence of migraine headache. Past history, medication usage, diagnosis, treatment, triggering factors, physical and intellectual activities was collected, analysed properly and response is recorded. These collected data will be subjected to statistical analysis. In the current research, a survey on functioning of male and female with migraine was formulated. Among the respondents about 18-35 age group is commonly affected migraine with 98.7%(n=74). Approximately, 63.5%(n=47) female are affected with migraine than 36.5%(n=27) male. About 11.16%(n=8) of patients taken prescription drugs and 52.2%(n=48) are taken over-the-counter medicines. Migraine worsened in 77.20%(n=48) patients with stress, 50%(n=33) bright sunshine, 33.30%(n=22) loud noise and others have air travel, fatigue, certain smells and perfume. The goal of management is to reduce frequency and severity of episodes in males and females. Also limit the impact of this chronic pain condition
Pyrazinamide induced photodermatitis: a case report
Photosensitivity reactions due to pyrazinamide are rare. In this report, a case of pyrazinamide induced photodermatitis has been reported in a patient who is one anti-tuberculosis treatment. The patient developed rashes with burning sensation which are worsened on exposure to sun. These rashes had developed since 5 days following 15 days of start of anti-tubercular drugs. Thus these kinds of adverse reactions can be prevented on early detection and reporting these can help in decrease the morbidity rate of tuberculosis with use of pyrazinamide in the treatment regimens
Understanding Cell Biology
The cell is the structural and functional unit of all living organisms and is sometimes called the "building block of life.” All living things are made from one or more cells. A cell is the simplest unit of life and they are responsible for keeping an organism alive and functioning. Almost every different type of cell contains genetic material, a membrane and cytoplasm. The most basic categorization of Earth’s organisms is determined by different types of cells. All cells can be divided into one of two classifications: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea. Eukaryotic cells are found in organisms from the domain Eukaryota which includes animals, plants, fungi and protists. Cell metabolism is the process by which individual cells process nutrient molecules. Metabolism has two distinct divisions: catabolism, in which the cell breaks down complex molecules to produce energy and reducing power, and anabolism, in which the cell uses energy and reducing power to construct complex molecules and perform other biological functions. Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665, who named them for their resemblance to cells inhabited by Christian monks in a monastery. Cell theory, first developed in 1839 by Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, states that all organisms are composed of one or more cells, that cells are the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms, and that all cells come from pre-existing cells. Cells emerged on Earth at least 3.5 billion years ago. The study of cells is called cell biology or cellular biology
Spectrophotometric determination and estimation of minoxidil in tablet dosage form by UV
A simple, precise, accurate and economical UV spectrophotometric method has been developed and validated for the estimation of Minoxidil in the tablet dosage form. Minoxidil shows maximum absorbance at 279.4nm. The method was carried out by using 0.1N HCl as a solvent. The drug shows linearity from the concentration range of 1-6µg/ml and correlation coefficient was found to be 0.9992. The proposed method was statistically validated for precision, accuracy, ruggedness, robustness, the limit of detection, quantitation as per the ICH guidelines. Hence this method can be successfully applied for routine analysis of Minoxidil in bulk and tablet dosage form
Aprepitant, a novel neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist in management of chemotherapy induces nausea vomiting (CINV) in cancer patients
Nausea and emesis are two major concerns for patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. The 5HT3 receptors antagonist ondansetron is the major factor for preventing and treatment for CINV either alone or often is combination with dexamethasone. Even these treatment options exist, CINV remind as major adverse event for all chemotherapeutic agents. The adverse events have major impact on patients quality of life and compliance with treatment. Aprepitant, a novel neurokinin-1 (NK-1) antagonist has been introduced as a new class of drug to prevent CINV. Many trials and studies reveals that comparison of aprepitant to the standard ondansetron and dexamethasone is superior in protecting against CINV. Here this study evaluate and reveals the use and benefits of aprepitant in the management of CINV
A rare case report on primary sjogren’s syndrome complicating as osteomalacia with renal tubular acidosis in a tertiary care teaching hospital tirupathi
Renal involvement in Sjogren’s syndrome (SS) is not uncommon and may precede other complaints. Tubulointerstitial nephritis is the most common renal disease in SS and may lead to, renal tubular acidosis (RTA), which in turn may cause osteomalacia. Nevertheless, osteomalacia rarely occurs as the first manifestation of a renal tubule connective tissue disorder due to SS. Here we are presenting a female patient of age 41 yrs was admitted in our hospital with chief complaints of bilateral thigh pain which restrict her walking with weakness. x-ray of long bone shows that extensive demineralization of the bone. Laboratory investigations revealed hypokalemia (3.2 mmol/L), hypophosphatemia (0.4 mmol/L), hypocalcemia (2.14 mmol/L) and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis (chlorine: 214 mmol/L; alkaline reserve: 14 mmol/L). The serum alkaline phosphatase levels were elevated. The serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D were low and borderline low, respectively, and the parathyroid hormone level was 90 pg/L. Urinalysis showed inappropriate alkaline urine (urinary PH: 7), glycosuria. These values indicated the presence of both distal and proximal RTA. Our patient reported dryness of the mouth and eyes and Schirmer’s test showed xerophthalmia
