Paikend and Bukhara as Symbols of the "Copper City": A Historical Examination of Oasis City Defense Systems and Cultural Significance

    Get PDF
Paikend was once a core city of the Bukhara oasis, renowned as the "Copper City" for its robust defense systems and strategic position. However, due to water resource depletion and geopolitical changes, Paikend gradually declined, and Bukhara rose to replace it as the regional center. Bukhara achieved its key position in Central Asia through a more sophisticated defense system, closer proximity to the Zerafshan River, and political and cultural innovations. The rise and fall of Paikend and Bukhara were not only closely tied to natural resources but were also deeply influenced by changes in geopolitical and military dynamics. The designation of "Copper City" symbolizes the defensive ingenuity and cultural heritage of oasis cities. While Paikend’s formidable walls represented an earlier singular defensive model, Bukhara transitioned to a comprehensive strategy through its triple-layered defense structure. By comparing the two cities, this study aims to reveal the dynamic changes of Central Asian oasis cities in terms of natural environment, technological innovation, and cultural integration, providing a new perspective on the historical development of this region

    Get PDF
Promoting the integrated development of urban and rural areas is of great significance for narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas, establishing a new type of urban-rural relationship, and achieving high-quality socialist modernization. This paper focuses on Sichuan Province and constructs an indicator system for the degree of urban-rural integration based on four dimensions: economic integration, social integration, population integration, and spatial integration. Then, using the entropy value method, it conducts a quantitative evaluation of the development status of urban-rural integration in the province from 2013 to 2022 to reveal the dynamic changes in its level of urban-rural integration. The results show that from 2013 to 2022, the overall level of urban-rural integration in Sichuan Province has shown an upward trend. Among the dimensions of urban-rural integration, social integration and spatial integration have achieved significant results, not only showing good current integration trends but also demonstrating rapid development speeds, presenting a positive development trend. In contrast, economic integration and population integration have performed less satisfactorily, with integration levels remaining at a relatively low level and slower development speeds, urgently requiring further optimization and improvement to achieve comprehensive and balanced urban-rural integration. The results indicate that the overall level of urban-rural integration in Sichuan Province is currently low, with disparities in regional development, unequal distribution of public services and infrastructure, and prominent issues of semi-urbanization in different areas

    Get PDF
Under the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy, the tourism industry in ancient towns in China has flourished unprecedentedly, with more and more ancient towns being renovated and developed as tourist attractions. Huangling Ancient Town, which has gained high popularity in recent years, has showcased its spectacular and unique drying autumn crops scenery, which sets it apart from other ancient town tourist attractions. However, there are phenomena such as superficialization, severe homogeneity, lack of innovation, lack of cultural connotation, and poor quality in the market of cultural and creative products in Huangling Ancient Town, which need to be improved to enhance its overall competitiveness in similar ancient town tourist attractions, increase residents' income, promote the economic development of the scenic area, and tell the story of the ancient town through cultural and creative products. This study mainly uses literature research, field investigation, questionnaire survey, and case study methods. First, the background, definition, and value of cultural and creative products are analyzed, and successful experiences from excellent cases are learned. Second, the development history, uniqueness, artistry, and innovation of Huangling autumn culture are summarized, and the economic and cultural values of the culture and the current situation of cultural and creative products in Huangling scenic area are deeply analyzed to prove the feasibility of cultural and creative products as a development and inheritance path for Huangling autumn culture. Examples are given to illustrate the principles that should be followed in designing cultural and creative products based on the autumn culture. Finally, the design process of Huangling autumn cultural and creative products is expounded and design practice is carried out. In the design of cultural and creative products, it is necessary to deeply mine the cultural connotation first, combine with the characteristics of the times, enrich the cultural value, attract a large number of consumers, so as to achieve the perfect integration of cultural and creative products and cultural elements, effectively promote the inheritance of culture, and drive economic development

A Semiotic Study of Reduplicative Words in Selected American Slang Expressions

    Get PDF
This study explores the semiotic aspects of American slang, specifically focusing on the phenomenon of reduplicative expressions in informal speech. Despite the extensive research on American slang, limited attention has been given to the cultural and mythical meanings embedded within reduplicative expressions. To address this gap, the study investigates how these expressions convey denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings within casual American discourse. The objectives of the study include: 1. To what extent does Barthes’ semiotic model hold potential for application in this study? 2. How are reduplicative slang expressions widely used in everyday American life? 3. To what extent do qualitative and quantitative methods have significance for this study?  The methodology combines qualitative analysis, involving an in-depth examination of selected reduplicative expressions, with quantitative analysis to measure their prevalence and usage in informal speech. Barthes’ semiotic framework encompassing denotation, connotation, and myth forms the theoretical foundation of the study. The findings reveal that reduplicative slang expressions not only carry literal meanings but also embody rich cultural and social connotations, reflecting key aspects of everyday American life. These expressions enhance interpersonal communication and serve as markers of cultural identity within informal discourse. The implications of this study lie in its contribution to understanding the intersection between language and culture, providing insights for future research on semiotics and its application in linguistic studies

Reevaluating the Role of Otolith Organs in Nystagmus Generation: An Experimental Approach

    Get PDF
This study investigates whether the otolith organs—the utricle and saccule—are involved in generating nystagmus. Using both human subject experiments (sway and squat tests) and inertial physical models, we demonstrate that linear accelerations do not produce nystagmus, challenging the prevailing view of an otolith-ocular reflex. Our results suggest that nystagmus is primarily mediated by the semicircular canals, while the otolith organs remain essential for body balance and gravity sensing. These findings prompt a reevaluation of vestibular reflex pathways and highlight the need for further investigation into vestibular physiology

    Get PDF
The northern karst region is an important area for the implementation of China's sustainable development strategy, and at the same time, it is also an area with extremely fragile ecological environment and concentrated distribution of soil erosion, but the research on the mechanisms and paths of realizing the value of ecological products in the northern karst region has been less involved. Taking the Zunhua study area in Hebei and the Wolf Tooth Mountain study area as an example, we constructed an ecological product value accounting index system based on different types of ecosystems and quantitatively analyzed the GEP of the two study areas. The results show that the GEP of Zunhua study area in Hebei Province in 2022 is 76.575 million yuan, of which the value of regulating services is the highest, accounting for 93.89 % of the total value of GEP; the value of cultural services is the lowest, accounting for 0.41 % of the total value of GEP; and the value of material services accounts for 5.70 % of the total value of GEP. In 2022, the GEP of the Langyashan Study Area in Hebei Province was 122,408,000 yuan, with the highest value of regulating services, accounting for 89 % of the total value of the GEP; the lowest value of material goods, accounting for 1 % of the total value of the GEP; and the value of cultural services, which accounted for 10 % of the GEP. suggests that the regulating services provided by ecosystems in the two study areas contribute the most to human well-being and are the most significant components of the GEP. And closely around the karst ecological products value accounting, value realization mechanism and path of basic cutting-edge research for the whole chain design, integrated deployment, module to promote systematic research, for the northern karst ecological restoration areas and ecological protection areas to practice the theory of the “two mountains”, to promote the formation and optimization of the ecological industry, and to promote the revitalization of the countryside to provide scientific references. Under the strategy of rural revitalization, it is urgent to apply the concept of ecological civilization to the development of rural industries. The study of ecological industry and industrial revitalization of karst village ecosystems can help to promote the revitalization of villages in ecologically fragile areas. However, the current status and progress of research on eco-industry and industrial revitalization of village ecosystems in ecologically fragile zones are unclear, and there is an insufficient summary of research results and problems. Therefore, based on 319 related literature, this paper focuses on the current status and progress of research on ecological industries and rural industrial revitalization in village ecosystems and reveals the current research results and shortcomings of ecological industrial revitalization in village ecosystems. We found that (1)village ecological industry and rural industry revitalization are becoming a hot topic; (2)Existing studies mainly focus on index system, driving factors, mechanism research and strategy research. (3) Research regions are mainly concentrated in Asia, North America and Africa. However, the main scientific and technological research such as the construction of indicator systems and the study of driving mechanisms are lagging behind. While summarizing the general rules, it also provides targeted insights and enlightenment for the sustainable management of karst desertification control ecosystem and the revitalization of rural industry
