Impact of Telecommuting on Employees’ Performance: A Focus on Telecommunication Out-Fits in Owerri, Imo State
Full text linkThis work examined the impact of telecommuting on employees’ performance. The dynamic nature of the environment in which our organizations operate and customers need made this investigation very necessary. The objectives of the study were; to find out if arrangement that enables employee to work at home has a positive relationship with better quality of work and to ascertain whether an arrangement that allows employee to work at agreed location has significant relationship with speedy service delivery. To achieve the objectives, a survey research design was adopted. The techniques employed in analyzing the data were descriptive statistics and spearman rank correlation coefficient. The results indicated that the arrangement that enables employee to work at home has a weak and positive relationship with better quality of work. It was also found that arrangement that allows employee to work at agreed location has a significant relationship with speedy service delivery. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that telecommuting has impact on employee performance. It was recommended that managers of telecommunication out-fits should continue with the arrangement that allows employees to work at agreed location since it was found to have significant relationship with speedy service delivery but also ensure that, there is a strong mechanism on ground to monitor the activities of the telecommuters
Attitudes of Teachers Who Implement School Mediation Programmes: A Case Study
Full text linkSchool mediation (or peer mediation) is an effective practice for resolving student-centered conflicts in the school context. According to the results of this qualitative research conducted at Secondary Education Schools of Western Attica (Greece), an area with particular social characteristics, school mediation programmes are a dynamic process and can contribute to: teamwork, communication and activation of students, changing attitudes and behaviors as well as inclusion of students with behavioral problems. These results are achieved despite the heterogeneity of the education programme followed and the heterogeneity of the population attending them. Under no circumstances, however, the implementation of a school mediation programme can be considered a panacea. On the contrary, it is proposed to be accompanied by other actions that will promote a different management spirit of the school and will improve the school climate
Toleration, Tolerance, or Intolerance in the Works of the Young Martin Luther: The Issue with Jews in Early Sixteenth-Century Christian World View
Full text linkMartin Luther=s hateful and anti-Judaic sentiments have attracted much attention especially because they have often been identified as highly influential on modern anti-Semitism. But in his early years, Luther could harbor quite different attitudes. A critical reading of his treatise ADaß Jesus Christus ein geborner Jude sei@ from 1523 will allow us to gain important insights into the delicate and yet impactful approach to toleration as it had developed throughout the Middle Ages. While Luther espoused a specific form of toleration, he cannot be identified as a defender of tolerance in the modern sense of the word. Tragically, however, despite his early attempt at reaching out to people of Jewish faith, the famous reformer quickly changed his mind and embraced a most aggressive strategy against Jews at large. This article will highlight the intricate and fragile nature of toleration as it was pursued by many medieval and early modern intellectuals and writers, and demonstrate that this ideal was highly appealing, but also subject to quick changes to the opposite
Argument-Structure-Reducing Operations in Standard Arabic: An Exploratory Comparative Study
Full text linkThis paper attempts to examine some argument-structure-reducing operations in Standard Arabic (SA for short). It is proposed here that some affixes (viz. prefixes and infixes) can decrease the argument structure (or valence) of the subclass of change-of-state (COS for short) verbs in the language under study. More specifically, these affixes function as unaccusativizers or decausativizers in that they can derive unaccusative COS verbs from causative COS verbs by suppressing the external argument of the latter verbs and syntactically promoting the direct object to subject position. Crucially, the ability of these affixes to affect the argument structure and the morphosyntactic realization of arguments is not limited to SA, but it has been attested in some other languages, such as Italian, Russian, Chichewa, Spanish, French, Eastern Armenian, West Greenlandic, and Tzutujil, among others.
 
Mother Tongue and Learning Environment as Students’ Predictors of Academic Achievement in Reading Comprehension
Full text linkThe study examined mother tongue and learning environment as students’ predictors of academic achievement in reading comprehension. This study adopted an ex-post facto design. The population consists of all senior secondary school students in Ijebu-North and Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State. A multi-stage random sampling technique was employed in selecting the sample. Four (4) senior secondary schools were randomly selected from each of the Local Government Area, making a total number of eight (8) senior secondary schools. Stratified random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 50 students from each of the selected senior secondary schools, 25 students each represent the gender totaling 400 students selected for this study. The instruments used for this study were two instruments, a questionnaire and an achievement test on reading comprehension. Kurder-Richardson 21 formula was used to obtain the inter-item reliability coefficient of 0.72 and items on achievement test on reading comprehension was extracted from a past questions of Ogun state unified examinations on English Language. The data analysis involved multiple regressions Analysis. The results were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Based on the findings, it was deduced that there is no significant composite influence of mother tongue and learning environment on students’ achievement in English Language. There is no significant relative influence of mother tongue on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Part of the recommendations made was that teachers should be encouraged in using mother tongues in teaching. Teachers should cultivate a positive perception towards the use of English in school
An Application of Software Engineering for Reading Linear-B Script
Full text linkLinear-B script has been studied for sixty years since its decipherment. The laborious efforts of the scholars have revealed many linguistic aspects of the oldest known form of Greek (i.e., Mycenaean/Danaic Greek), thus allowing the study of this Indo-European language and its dynamics for thirty-five centuries. In addition, linguistic phenomena closer to the roots of Indo-European languages can be also studied. Yet, the limited usage of Linear-B script, merely for keeping records, and its incompatibility to the Greek phonotactics causes misinterpretations of various kinds. The study of Linear-B was not supported till recently by interactive software tools that would facilitate both research and training. Especially for Greek speakers, the resources are even more limited. This paper presents the development of an interactive software system for the study, learning and researching of Linear-B by Greek speakers. This software system is also suggested as a model for the interpretation of other archaic languages
