Social Justice Conversations: Using Critical Dialogue to Unpack Oppression
Get PDFDialogues can bring people together across social divides to develop mutual understanding, generate empathy, and challenge oppression. Yet, all too often, these conversations derail and merely reinforce rather than challenge the social divides they are designed to bridge. We piloted a brief small group program aimed at fostering dialogue about racism and other forms of oppression with 100 undergraduates. A thematic analysis of the resulting 37 group transcripts found that the critical dialogue process helped participants unpack the nature and complexity of oppression, deepen their understanding of privilege, and begin to share and challenge the experience of oppression itself. Sharing thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences, participants used the critical dialogue process to work together to disrupt oppression in their lives

The Ecological Factor: Culvert Assessment for Replacement or Removal in Northampton, MA
No full textCulverts installed around the world to accommodate increased urbanization and human intrusion into natural spaces pose significant risk to the resiliency of socio-ecological systems. This is because of weathering, age, and design flaws, including being undersized or made with improper materials. Culvert installation and replacement practices have been extremely human-centric thus far, and as more replacement projects are instituted, environmental factors need to be taken into account. The city of Northampton has plans to replace high priority culverts, however, they do not have comprehensive guidelines for a pre- and post-assessment of culverts that prioritizes their impacts on the surrounding ecology. The goal of this project is to create a more rigorous set of criteria and methodology for conducting pre- and post-assessment of culverts and identify a list of culverts in Northampton that are high priority for replacement or removal under these evaluative measures. In order to accomplish this, we created a Spatial Ecological Assessment. This method is broken into four stages: 1. preliminary research: literature review on wetlands and significant ecological factors, 2. intermediary analysis: creation of GIS raster and selection of culverts for in-person assessment, 3. culvert assessment: on-site evaluation of culverts using an existing scorecard, and 4. deliverables: our recommendations for the city of Northampton and the independent contractor they have hired. Our deliverables will include a ranked list of culverts that we believe should be prioritized in the removal/replacement process as well as a GIS map to assist in future site-selection. The eventual culvert replacement that will follow this work will have significant ecological, public health, and economic impacts. It will ensure a more resilient and sustainable future for Northampton and serve as a model for culvert replacement projects in other locations

Get PDF本研究では、コロナ禍で遠隔、以後対面授業へ移行した初級学習者の学習経験の調査を目的に、筆者ら の大学で 2020 年秋から遠隔で日本語 1 年生を履修、2021 年秋に対面で日本語 2 年生を続けた学生らを対 象に、匿名アンケートとインタビューをし、その結果に加え、授業観察やエッセイ等をデータとして分 析した。また、インタビューを元に、遠隔授業と対面授業をそれぞれ担当した教師の対話もデータとし て考察した。本稿では、遠隔と対面授業で学習者が感じた違いとそれに伴う学習観の構築を探り、同価 値理論を背景とした遠隔から対面カリキュラム移行の際に生じた学習観のズレや、其々の学習環境にお ける学習の有効性について考察する。本研究は、遠隔授業を経験した初級学習者を対面授業後も継続的 に観察した報告例として、ポスト・コロナの日本語授業を考える上で、学習観を踏まえた教師側の情報 交換や振り返りの機会に貢献できるのではないかと考える
Well Excuse Me! Replicating and Connecting Excuse-Seeking Behaviors
Get PDFExcuse-seeking behavior that facilitates replacing altruistic choices with self-interested ones has been documented in several domains. In a laboratory study, we replicate three leading papers on this topic: Dana et al. (2007), and the use of information avoidance; Exley (2015), and the use of differential risk preferences; and Di Tella et al. (2015), and the use of motivated beliefs. The replications were conducted as part of a graduate course, attempting to embed one answer to the growing call for experimental replications within the pedagogic process. We fully replicate the simpler Dana et al. paper, and broadly replicate the core findings for the other two projects, though with reduced effect sizes and a failure to replicate on some secondary measures. Finally, we attempt to connect behaviors to facilitate the understanding of how each fit within the broader literature. However, we find no connections across domains
Improved Orbital Constraints and Hα Photometric Monitoring of the Directly Imaged Protoplanet Analog HD 142527 B
Get PDFCompanions embedded in the cavities of transitional circumstellar disks have been observed to exhibit excess luminosity at Hα, an indication that they are actively accreting. We report 5 yr (2013-2018) of monitoring of the position and Hα excess luminosity of the embedded, accreting low-mass stellar companion HD 142527 B from the MagAO/VisAO instrument. We use pyklip, a Python implementation of the Karhunen-Loeve Image Processing algorithm, to detect the companion. Using pyklip forward modeling, we constrain the relative astrometry to 1-2 mas precision and achieve sufficient photometric precision (±0.2 mag, 3% error) to detect changes in the Hα contrast of the companion over time. In order to accurately determine the relative astrometry of the companion, we conduct an astrometric calibration of the MagAO/VisAO camera against 20 yr of Keck/NIRC2 images of the Trapezium cluster. We demonstrate agreement of our VisAO astrometry with other published positions for HD 142527 B, and use orbitize! to generate a posterior distribution of orbits fit to the relative astrometry of HD 142527 B. Our data suggest that the companion is close to periastron passage, on an orbit significantly misaligned with respect to both the wide circumbinary disk and the recently observed inner disk encircling HD 142527 A. We translate observed Hα contrasts for HD 142527 B into mass accretion rate estimates on the order of 4-9 × 10-10 M yr-1. Photometric variation in the Hα excess of the companion suggests that the accretion rate onto the companion is variable. No full textWith the introduction of the New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS) to provide a safety net for the elderly in rural China, pension coverage has increased dramatically in the last decade. The NRPS introduces an interesting question as to what extent public transfer impacts traditional private transfer within the family. This paper utilizes four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to examine how the NRPS receipts impact intergenerational support, including transfers and emotional support. The results of my regression discontinuity design show evidence that public transfers derived from the NRPS significantly crowd in downstream transfers and emotional support within the family. Heterogeneous analysis by income group indicates that the crowding-in effect on downstream transfers persists for low-income families but becomes crowding-out for middle-income families. There are also different effects on emotional support by income group; high-income families are expected to have fewer weekly contacts. In addition, there are significant effects by parental marital status on emotional support; households with two married parents are associated with more emotional support. The findings provide suggestive evidence that the NRPS program has a positive impact on the intended beneficiaries\u27 intergenerational behavior and this strengthens family solidarity
