    The purpose of this paper is two-fold; to study Kuhnau both as a composer and as a typical musician of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries in which he lived. In the latter respect, study of Kuhnau is more valuable than study of Bach, for a man whose talents are not of the proportions of genius, typifies the color of his time much better than a real genius can. In studying Kuhnau as a composer, I hope to prove that his works have not only historical significance, but intrinsic beauty and worth
