The Effect of Medicaid on Recidivism: Evidence From Medicaid Suspension and Termination Policies
Although people who go through the prison and jail system in the United States have significant health care needs, many leave it with no health insurance and, as a result, they experience gaps in access to care. Exploiting variation in Medicaid eligibility policies for incarcerated individuals across states and using administrative prison release data, we find that suspending rather than terminating Medicaid upon incarceration decreases the probability of returning to prison within 1 and 3 years of release by 2.91 and 4.58 percentage points, respectively. These effects are observed among different types of prisoners, but are greater for Black and repeat offenders. Our results suggest that faster and easier reinstatement of Medicaid benefits upon prison release decreases recidivism rate and are directly relevant to ongoing policy debates on the health care coverage of vulnerable populations

Unusual Genomes: Exploring Genome Architecture in Ciliates and Ploidy Cycles Across the Eukaryotic Tree of Life
Genomes that deviate from the textbook depictions of simplistic haploid/diploid cycling are not that uncommon. Foundational concepts of biology taught in early education form our rigid understanding of life. Especially within the realm of life cycles and genomes, variability is often ignored to simplify biological concepts. In addition to the lack of diversity in these models, unicellular organisms - especially microeukaryotes (aka protists) - are often neglected. While protists remain a largely understudied clade of organisms, preliminary data have shown that they contain significant diversity in terms of life cycle variability and nuclear architecture amongst other organisms on the tree of life. One clade of microeukaryotes that exemplifies this diversity is the ciliates. Defined by their nuclear dualism, or the presence of a somatic macronucleus and germline micronucleus within a single cell, ciliates have become a model organism for research into genome dynamics. Here, I explore the nuclear architecture of ciliates, examining somatic and germline distinctions in hopes of better understanding their genome plasticity and diversity. In my first chapter, I demonstrate that uncultivable ciliates are a challenging clade of organisms to analyze bioinformatically because 1) they contain microbiomes and 2) their rDNA is tough to identify due to the difficulty of fully sequencing their large genomes. This work expands knowledge of the nature of ciliate genome architecture and provides further avenues of research in this field. In my second chapter, a literature review, I state that life cycle and genomic variability are not limited to just ciliates as unusual ploidy cycles occur all throughout the eukaryotic tree of life. Overall, the consensus is that “irregular” genomes are not quite as unusual as we are led to believe
Generating Music with Structure Using Self-Similarity as Attention
In my thesis, I create and evaluate a deep learning autonomous music generation system with two layers. The first is a bidirectional Long Short Term Memory layer that carries out typical generation. The attention layer uses a novel approach to apply self-similarity matrices to previous time steps. This attention mechanism imposes an input structure on the generated music. I train this model on the MAESTRO dataset, and compare its performance on new data to the same model without the attention mechanism. The addition of the attention mechanism significantly improves the network’s ability to replicate specific structures, and it performs comparatively better on a validation dataset than a model without the attention mechanism

Social Behavior and Youth Psychopathology during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study
The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated stay-at-home orders resulted in a stark reduction in daily social interactions for children and adolescents. Given that peer relationships are especially important during this developmental stage, it is crucial to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social behavior and risk for psychopathology in children and adolescents. In a longitudinal sample (N=224) of children (7-10y) and adolescents (13-15y) assessed at three strategic time points (before the pandemic, during the initial stay-at-home order period, and six months later after the initial stay-at-home order period was lifted), we examine whether certain social factors protect against increases in stress-related psychopathology during the pandemic, controlling for pre-pandemic symptoms. Youth who reported less in-person and digital socialization, greater social isolation, and less social support had worsened psychopathology during the pandemic. Greater social isolation and decreased digital socialization during the pandemic were associated with greater risk for psychopathology after experiencing pandemic-related stressors. In addition, children, but not adolescents, who maintained some in-person socialization were less likely to develop internalizing symptoms following exposure to pandemic-related stressors.
