Community Centers as Hubs for Collective Wellbeing
This project paper highlights the significance of a mentorship program that can empower young parents to become change agents in their communities, particularly those living in precarious housing conditions. Incorporating co-creation principles can greatly benefit the program by involving young parents in the design and implementation of the program, which can further enhance their sense of autonomy. By drawing on needs assessment and interview surveys, this project paper highlights the importance of direct mentorship in building leadership skills and confidence among young parents, which enables them to navigate the shelter system and access resources and services. Furthermore, co-creation opportunities that involve young parents in designing and implementing programs and services can be a powerful way to support their personal and community development. By working with local shelters and community organizations, this project paper aims to identify and support young parents who need mentoring and co-creation support, helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and their families while also contributing to positive changes in their communities. Ultimately, this approach can contribute to building a more just and equitable society for all by empowering young parents
Wide Range Thin-Film Ceramic Metal-Alloy Thermometers with Low Magnetoresistance
Many thermal measurements in high magnetic fields require thermometers that are sensitive over a wide temperature range, are low mass, have a rapid thermal response, and have a minimal, easily correctable magnetoresistance. Here we report the development of a new granular-metal oxide ceramic composite (cermet) for this purpose formed by co-sputtering of the metallic alloy nichrome Ni0.8Cr0.2 and the insulator silcon dioxide SiO2. The resulting thin films are sensitive enough to be used from room temperature down to below 100 mK in magnetic fields up to at least 35 tesla
The Giant Accreting Protoplanet Survey (Gaplanets)—Results from a 6 Yr Campaign to Image Accreting Protoplanets
Accreting protoplanets are windows into planet formation processes, and high-contrast differential imaging is an effective way to identify them. We report results from the Giant Accreting Protoplanet Survey (GAPlanetS), which collected Hα differential imagery of 14 transitional disk host stars with the Magellan Adaptive Optics System. To address the twin challenges of morphological complexity and point-spread function instability, GAPlanetS required novel approaches for frame selection and optimization of the Karhounen-Loéve Image Processing algorithm pyKLIP. We detect one new candidate, CS Cha “c,” at a separation of 68 mas and a modest Δmag of 2.3. We recover the HD 142527 B and HD 100453 B accreting stellar companions in several epochs, and the protoplanet PDS 70 c in 2017 imagery, extending its astrometric record by nine months. Though we cannot rule out scattered light structure, we also recover LkCa 15 “b,” at Hα; its presence inside the disk cavity, absence in Continuum imagery, and consistency with a forward-modeled point source suggest that it remains a viable protoplanet candidate. Through targeted optimization, we tentatively recover PDS 70 c at two additional epochs and PDS 70 b in one epoch. Despite numerous previously reported companion candidates around GAplanetS targets, we recover no additional point sources. Our moderate Hα contrasts do not preclude most protoplanets, and we report limiting Hα contrasts at unrecovered candidate locations. We find an overall detection rate of ∼36 − 22 + 26 % , considerably higher than most direct imaging surveys, speaking to both GAPlanetS’s highly targeted nature and the promise of Hα differential imaging for protoplanet identification
The JWST Early-Release Science Program for Direct Observations of Exoplanetary Systems Ii: A 1 To 20 Μm Spectrum of the Planetary-Mass Companion Vhs 1256-1257 B
We present the highest fidelity spectrum to date of a planetary-mass object. VHS 1256 b is a (∼8″, a = 150 au), young, planetary-mass companion that shares photometric colors and spectroscopic features with the directly imaged exoplanets HR 8799c, d, and e. As an L-to-T transition object, VHS 1256 b exists along the region of the color-magnitude diagram where substellar atmospheres transition from cloudy to clear. We observed VHS 1256 b with JWST\u27s NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS modes for coverage from 1 to 20 μm at resolutions of ∼1000-3700. Water, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sodium, and potassium are observed in several portions of the JWST spectrum based on comparisons from template brown dwarf spectra, molecular opacities, and atmospheric models. The spectral shape of VHS 1256 b is influenced by disequilibrium chemistry and clouds. We directly detect silicate clouds, the first such detection reported for a planetary-mass companion
Spatially Resolved Imaging of the Inner Fomalhaut Disk Using JWST/MIRI
Planetary debris disks around other stars are analogous to the asteroid and Kuiper belts in the Solar System. Their structure reveals the configuration of small bodies and provides hints for the presence of planets. The nearby star Fomalhaut hosts one of the most prominent debris disks, resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer, Herschel and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. Images of this system at mid-infrared wavelengths using JWST/MIRI not only show the narrow Kuiper belt-analogue outer ring, but also that (1) what was thought from indirect evidence to be an asteroid-analogue structure is instead broad, extending outward into the outer system, and (2) there is an intermediate belt, probably shepherded by an unseen planet. The newly discovered belt is demarcated by an inner gap, located at ~78 au, and it is misaligned relative to the outer belt. The previously known collisionally generated dust cloud, Fomalhaut b, could have originated from this belt, suggesting increased dynamical stirring and collision rates there. We also discovered a large dust cloud within the outer ring, possible evidence of another dust-creating collision. Taken together with previous observations, Fomalhaut appears to be the site of a complex and possibly dynamically active planetary system
Teaching Chinese Politics in the “New Cold War”: A Survey of Faculty
How have worsening US-China relations affected faculty teaching Chinese politics in the US? This paper presents results from a 2022 survey of political science faculty. While student interest in Chinese politics remains high, faculty report a range of new challenges arising from increasingly nationalistic sentiments among both Chinese and American students, negative effects of both US and Chinese government policies, and an increase in anti-Asian bias. This article documents faculty experiences teaching Chinese politics, and offers recommendations for addressing common challenges

Emet le-Ya‘akov comprises a collection of essays celebrating the career and achievements of Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, who has served the American and international Jewish community with distinction in his roles as a synagogue rabbi, university professor, and public intellectual. These articles, like the honoree, recognize the importance of both history and memory, emphasize the necessity of accuracy in historiography, and do not shy away from inconvenient truths. They are divided into three categories that help frame the discussion around “facing the truths of history”: Textual Traditions, Memory and Making of Meaning, and (Re)Creating a Usable Past. Issue 2: Sátya
The Smith College Philosophy Journal, formerly Eudaimonia, was founded in the Fall of 2019 by You Jeen Ha. Due to the coronavirus, publication was suspended, and the original members of the Journal have since graduated. Finally, in Fall 2023, we are reviving the Journal under a new name, Sátya–a Sanskrit word meaning truth. We feel Sátya is representative of our cross-cultural approach to philosophy at Smith.
This edition of Sàtya is made up of the essays presented by students at Smith’s inaugural Five College Philosophy Conference in the Spring of 2023. The selection pool was full of quality submissions from the five colleges, and these papers were chosen for their creativity and depth of philosophical inquiry. The first volume of Sátya features topics in bioethics and technology, ethics and society, morality and aesthetics, and the history of philosophy. Influence of Feedstock and Moisture Content in a Continuous Feed Screw Torrefier
This paper investigates the parameters impacting product quality in a pilot scale biomass torrefaction reactor. The system analyzed in this work was designed and manufactured by Norris Thermal Technologies for use in Big Lagoon, California at a remote mill site. The torrefaction unit was a continuous feed reactor with an electrically heated screw, which served the dual purpose of heating and biomass conveyance. The energy and mass yields were found to be highly correlated in this analysis. The best predictor of both energy and mass yield in this study was the steady state temperature measurement in the biomass product closest to the outlet of the reactor. The variation in residence time, moisture content and feedstock species are not statistically significant parameters for predicting mass yield or energy yield. The enhancement of the higher heating value was correlated with temperature and species with the enhancement factor greatest on average for tan oak, next largest for slash and redwood, and smallest for douglas fir. The proximate analysis exhibited a strong correlation between both fixed carbon and volatile matter and mass yield, as well as a moderate correlation to the product 3 steady state temperature. The ash content of the product did not exhibit a correlation with mass yield or temperature. The residence time, feedstock moisture content, and feedstock did not have statistically significant effects on the proximate analysis content when mass yield and temperature were considered
The Borders of Theory: Towards an Artful Ontology of Knowing in Qualitative Research
This article considers the ontology of theory as a shaping phenomenon in qualitative research by opening up its intersection with artistic dimensions of knowing and knowledge. We argue that the plurality of practices and perspectives for research hinges on what theory is understood to be. Thus, rather than approaching theory as something predefined, we draw on conceptualizations of the experience of art to articulate the being of theory as an aesthetic renewal of a shared human movement of becoming. We then illuminate theory’s potential as a multidimensional artful being by engaging with a subset of photographs of street art collected in Colombia
