En nuestros propios cuartos somos libres para imaginar, pensar, crear, recordar. Para descubrir nuestras identidades y probarnos tanta ropa como queramos. Es nuestra habitación un refugio para ser nosotros mismos sin tapujos ni disfraces, un lugar seguro donde descubrir la preferencia sexual y el sexo, aprender a convivir con nuestras múltiples identidades y desde donde contemplar y aceptar el paso del tiempo. Who are we when we are trying to find ourselves in a world full of noise? In our own rooms we are free to imagine, think, create, remember. To discover our identities and try on as many clothes as we want. Our room is a refuge to be ourselves without disguises or disguises, a safe place to discover sexual preference and sex, learn to live with our multiple identities and from where to contemplate and accept the passage of time.     Adenotonsillectomy for Snoring and Mild Sleep Apnea in Children: A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Importance: The utility of adenotonsillectomy in children who have habitual snoring without frequent obstructive breathing events (mild sleep-disordered breathing [SDB]) is unknown. Objectives: To evaluate early adenotonsillectomy compared with watchful waiting and supportive care (watchful waiting) on neurodevelopmental, behavioral, health, and polysomnographic outcomes in children with mild SDB. Design, Setting, and Participants: Randomized clinical trial enrolling 459 children aged 3 to 12.9 years with snoring and an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) less than 3 enrolled at 7 US academic sleep centers from June 29, 2016, to February 1, 2021, and followed up for 12 months. Intervention: Participants were randomized 1:1 to either early adenotonsillectomy (n = 231) or watchful waiting (n = 228). Main Outcomes and Measures: The 2 primary outcomes were changes from baseline to 12 months for caregiver-reported Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) Global Executive Composite (GEC) T score, a measure of executive function; and a computerized test of attention, the Go/No-go (GNG) test d-prime signal detection score, reflecting the probability of response to target vs nontarget stimuli. Twenty-two secondary outcomes included 12-month changes in neurodevelopmental, behavioral, quality of life, sleep, and health outcomes. Results: Of the 458 participants in the analyzed sample (231 adenotonsillectomy and 237 watchful waiting; mean age, 6.1 years; 230 female [50%]; 123 Black/African American [26.9%]; 75 Hispanic [16.3%]; median AHI, 0.5 [IQR, 0.2-1.1]), 394 children (86%) completed 12-month follow-up visits. There were no statistically significant differences in change from baseline between the 2 groups in executive function (BRIEF GEC T-scores: -3.1 for adenotonsillectomy vs -1.9 for watchful waiting; difference, -0.96 [95% CI, -2.66 to 0.74]) or attention (GNG d-prime scores: 0.2 for adenotonsillectomy vs 0.1 for watchful waiting; difference, 0.05 [95% CI, -0.18 to 0.27]) at 12 months. Behavioral problems, sleepiness, symptoms, and quality of life each improved more with adenotonsillectomy than with watchful waiting. Adenotonsillectomy was associated with a greater 12-month decline in systolic and diastolic blood pressure percentile levels (difference in changes, -9.02 [97% CI, -15.49 to -2.54] and -6.52 [97% CI, -11.59 to -1.45], respectively) and less progression of the AHI to greater than 3 events/h (1.3% of children in the adenotonsillectomy group compared with 13.2% in the watchful waiting group; difference, -11.2% [97% CI, -17.5% to -4.9%]). Six children (2.7%) experienced a serious adverse event associated with adenotonsillectomy. Conclusions: In children with mild SDB, adenotonsillectomy, compared with watchful waiting, did not significantly improve executive function or attention at 12 months. However, children with adenotonsillectomy had improved secondary outcomes, including behavior, symptoms, and quality of life and decreased blood pressure, at 12-month follow-up.     In the early 1930s, both coastal and offshore Japanese fisheries in Kamchatka caused strong tensions between Japan and Soviet authorities. Japanese salmon fishery companies then turned their attention to the East Bering Sea near Alaska. The Japanese government operated its experimental salmon fishery in the international waters of Bristol Bay in Alaska in 1936–1937. The operation immediately triggered massive protests from the US side. Even though the Japanese government was seriously concerned about the situation, Japan could not step back easily, as a compromise with the USA would weaken Japan’s position in its negotiations on a new fishery treaty with the USSR. By examining several conflicts concerning the Bering Sea between Japan, the USSR, and the USA, we come to a fuller understanding of the rivalry between Japan and Russia regarding fisheries in Russian Far East waters in the 1930s.https://scholarworks.smith.edu/hst_books/1011/thumbnail.jp

    The Role of Cargo-Motor Connectivity in Transport by Ensembles of Dynein

    The microtubule associated motor protein cytoplasmic dynein is central to eukaryotic, intracellular cargo transport. In cells, these molecular motors work as teams in which multiple motors are connected to a single cargo. Despite the physiological importance of these motor ensembles and a growing knowledge base surrounding individual motor mechanisms, the biophysics of motor cooperation on a single cargo is poorly understood. Through the use of programmable DNA origami “chassis” structures and total internal reflectance microscopy, we are able to monitor the motility of specially designed ensembles in which the motor number and arrangement as well as the placement and degree of resistive force are controlled. This study seeks to make use of these methods to discern if, and how, the applied forces of disparate motors are structurally, and possibly synergistically, integrated through independent connections to a resistive load. Specifically, I hope to compare the motive forces of ensembles arranged with shared and independent cargo attachment sites and investigate the effects of motor number and resistive load placement on force integration and transmission through cargo structures. We hypothesize that individual motors are better able to share a load when independently attached to a cargo because such configurations may reduce negative interference between motors and allow for the direct application of each motor’s individual force on the resistive load. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of methods for use to investigate the emergent motility of synthetic motor ensembles in these arrangements

    Genome Assembly of the Foot-Flagging Frog, Staurois Parvus: a Resource for Understanding Mechanisms of Behavior

    Elaborate and skilled movements of the body have been selected in a variety of species as courtship and rivalry signals. One roadblock in studying these behaviors has been a lack of resources for understanding how they evolved at the genetic level. The Bornean rock frog (Staurois parvus) is an ideal species in which to address this issue. Males wave their hindlimbs in a foot-flagging display when competing for mates. The evolution of foot flagging in S. parvus and other species is accompanied by increases in the expression of the androgen receptor gene within its neuromuscular system, but it remains unclear what genetic or transcriptional changes are associated with this behavioral phenotype. We have now assembled the genome of S. parvus, resulting in 3.98 Gbp of 22,402 contigs with an N50 of 611,229 bp. The genome will be a resource for finding genes related to the physiology underlying foot flagging and to adaptations of the neuromuscular system. As a first application of the genome, we also began work in comparative genomics and differential gene expression analysis. We show that the androgen receptor is diverged from other anuran species, and we identify unique expression patterns of genes in the spinal cord and leg muscle that are important for axial patterning, cell specification and morphology, or muscle contraction. This genome will continue to be an important tool for future -omics studies to understand the evolution of elaborate signaling behaviors in this and potentially related species

    The Comprehensive Archive of Substellar and Planetary Accretion Rates

    Accretion rates ( M ̇ ) of young stars show a strong correlation with object mass (M); however, extension of the M ̇ - M relation into the substellar regime is less certain. Here, we present the Comprehensive Archive of Substellar and Planetary Accretion Rates (CASPAR), the largest compilation to date of substellar accretion diagnostics. CASPAR includes: 658 stars, 130 brown dwarfs, and 10 bound planetary mass companions. In this work, we investigate the contribution of methodological systematics to scatter in the M ̇ - M relation and compare brown dwarfs to stars. In our analysis, we rederive all quantities using self-consistent models, distances, and empirical line flux to accretion luminosity scaling relations to reduce methodological systematics. This treatment decreases the original 1σ scatter in the log M ̇ - log M relation by ∼17%, suggesting that it makes only a small contribution to the dispersion. The CASPAR rederived values are best fit by M ̇ ∝ M 2.02 ± 0.06 from 10 M J to 2 M ⊙, confirming previous results. However, we argue that the brown-dwarf and stellar populations are better described separately and by accounting for both mass and age. Therefore, we derive separate age-dependent M ̇ - M relations for these regions and find a steepening in the brown-dwarf M ̇ - M slope with age. Within this mass regime, the scatter decreases from 1.36 dex to 0.94 dex, a change of ∼44%. This result highlights the significant role that evolution plays in the overall spread of accretion rates, and suggests that brown dwarfs evolve faster than stars, potentially as a result of different accretion mechanisms

    First VLTI/GRAVITY Observations of HIP 65426 b: Evidence for a Low or Moderate Orbital Eccentricity

    Giant exoplanets have been directly imaged over orders of magnitude of orbital separations, prompting theoretical and observational investigations of their formation pathways. In this paper, we present new VLTI/GRAVITY astrometric data of HIP 65426 b, a cold, giant exoplanet which is a particular challenge for most formation theories at a projected separation of 92 au from its primary. Leveraging GRAVITY’s astrometric precision, we present an updated eccentricity posterior that disfavors large eccentricities. The eccentricity posterior is still prior dependent, and we extensively interpret and discuss the limits of the posterior constraints presented here. We also perform updated spectral comparisons with self-consistent forward-modeled spectra, finding a best-fit ExoREM model with solar metallicity and C/O = 0.6. An important caveat is that it is difficult to estimate robust errors on these values, which are subject to interpolation errors as well as potentially missing model physics. Taken together, the orbital and atmospheric constraints paint a preliminary picture of formation inconsistent with scattering after disk dispersal.     Indigenous Groups and Ethnic Minorities

    Identity-based claim-making is prevalent across Southeast Asia but its character and mobilisation vary markedly. The multitudes of ethnic and indigenous groups in the region often form fractured civil societies that reduce possibilities for larger solidarity movements. Grassroots organisations formed along identity lines often have competing interests while states manipulate existing fault-lines to prevent the rise of a coherent civil society. However, in rare cases, alliances can form, where common agendas create opportunities for broad claims against the state. As such, both ethnic and indigenous minorities in Southeast Asia have explored a wide range of claim-making activities from protest to civil war. This chapter examines indigenous claim-making as a unique subset of ethnic claim-making. It contrasts both ethnic and indigenous claim-making in Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines in order to show how different state institutions shape the nature of contention when claims are made at local and national levels. The chapter shows how different groups navigate these structures to either assert their uniqueness or form broad coalitions. Through comparative analysis, it demonstrates the general pattern of civil society contention for ethnic and indigenous minorities in Southeast Asia, while situating it within the specific political and social contexts of each case examined.https://scholarworks.smith.edu/gov_books/1012/thumbnail.jp
