Real Life in Real Time: Live Streaming Culture
The cultural ramifications of online live streaming, including its effects on identity and power in digital spaces. Some consider live streaming—the broadcasting of video and/or audio footage live online—simply an internet fad or source of entertainment, yet it is at the center of the digital mediation of our lives. In this edited volume, Johanna Brewer, Bo Ruberg, Amanda L. L. Cullen, and Christopher J. Persaud present a broad range of essays that explore the cultural implications of live streaming, paying special attention to how it is shifting notions of identity and power in digital spaces. The diverse set of international authors included represent a variety of perspectives, from digital media studies to queer studies, from human-computer interaction to anthropology, and more. While important foundational work has been carried out by game studies scholars, many other elements of streaming practices remain to be explored. To deepen engagement with diversity and social justice, the editors have included a variety of voices on such topics as access, gender, sexuality, race, disability, harassment, activism, and the cultural implications of design aesthetics. Live streaming affects a wide array of behaviors, norms, and patterns of communication. But above all, it lets participants observe and engage with real life as it unfolds in real time. Ultimately, these essays challenge us to look at both the possibilities for harm and the potential for radical change that live streaming presents. repytah: An Open-Source Python Package for Building Aligned Hierarchies for Sequential Data
We introduce repytah, a Python package that constructs the aligned hierarchies representation that contains all possible structure-based hierarchical decompositions for a finite length piece of sequential data aligned on a common time axis. In particular, this representation–introduced by Kinnaird (2016) with music-based data (like musical recordings or scores) as the primary motivation–is intended for sequential data where repetitions have particular meaning (such as a verse, chorus, motif, or theme). Although the original motivation for the aligned hierarchies representation was finding structure for music-based data streams, there is nothing inherent in the construction of these representations that limits repytah to only being used on sequential data that is music-based.
The repytah package builds these aligned hierarchies by first extracting repeated structures (of all meaningful lengths) from the self-dissimilarity matrix (SDM) for a piece of sequential data. Intentionally repytah uses the SDM as the starting point for constructing the aligned hierarchies, as an SDM cannot be reversed-engineered back to the original signal and allows for researchers to collaborate with signals that are protected either by copyright or under privacy considerations. This package is a Python translation of the original MATLAB code by Kinnaird (2014) with additional documentation, and the code has been updated to leverage efficiencies in Python
Passing and Posing in Colonial Manchuria in Murō Saisei\u27s \u3ci\u3eKoto of the Continent\u3c/i\u3e
Book summary: Passing, Posing, Persuasion interrogates the intersections between cultural production, identity, and persuasive messaging that idealized inclusion and unity across Japan\u27s East Asian empire (1895-1945). Japanese propagandists drew on a pan-Asian rhetoric that sought to persuade colonial subjects to identify with the empire while simultaneously maintaining the distinctions that subjugated them and marking their attempts to self-identify as Japanese as inauthentic, illegitimate forms of passing or posing. Visions of inclusion encouraged assimilation but also threatened to disrupt the very logic of imperialism itself: If there was no immutable difference between Taiwanese and Japanese subjects, for example, then what justified the subordination of the former to the latter? The chapters emphasize the plurality and heterogeneity of empire, together with the contradictions and tensions of its ideologies of race, nation, and ethnicity. The paradoxes of passing, posing, and persuasion opened up unique opportunities for colonial contestation and negotiation in the arenas of cultural production, including theater, fiction, film, magazines, and other media of entertainment and propaganda consumed by audiences in mainland Japan and its colonies. From Meiji adaptations of Shakespeare and interwar mass media and colonial fiction to wartime propaganda films, competing narratives sought to shape how ambiguous identities were performed and read. All empires necessarily engender multiple kinds of border crossings and transgressions; in the case of Japan, the policing and blurring of boundaries often pivoted on the outer markers of ethno-national identification. This book showcases how actors--in multiple senses of the word--from all parts of the empire were able to move in and out of different performative identities, thus troubling its ontological boundaries

More Human than Human: LLM-Generated Narratives Outperform Human-LLM Interleaved Narratives
Narrative story generation has gained emerging interest in the field of large language models. The present paper aims to compare stories generated by an LLM only (non-interleaved) with those generated by interleaving human-generated and LLM-generated text (interleaved). The study’s hypothesis is that interleaved stories would perform better than non-interleaved stories. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted two tests with roughly 500 participants each. Participants were asked to rate stories of each type, including an overall score or preference and four facets—logical soundness, plausibility, understandability, and novelty. Our findings indicate that interleaved stories were in fact less preferred than non-interleaved stories. The result has implications for the design and implementation of our story generators. This study contributes new insights into the potential uses and restrictions of interleaved and non-interleaved systems regarding generating narrative stories, which may help to improve the performance of such story generators
Data Science Transfer Pathways from Associate\u27s to Bachelor\u27s Programs
A substantial fraction of students who complete their college education at a public university in the United States begin their journey at one of the 935 public 2-year colleges. While the number of 4-year colleges offering bachelor’s degrees in data science continues to increase, data science instruction at many 2-year colleges lags behind. A major impediment is the relative paucity of introductory data science courses that serve multiple student audiences and can easily transfer. In addition, the lack of predefined transfer pathways (or articulation agreements) for data science creates a growing disconnect that leaves students who want to study data science at a disadvantage. We describe opportunities and barriers to data science transfer pathways. Five points of curricular friction merit attention: 1) a first course in data science, 2) a second course in data science, 3) a course in scientific computing, data science workflow, and/or reproducible computing, 4) lab sciences, and 5) navigating communication, ethics, and application domain requirements in the context of general education and liberal arts course mappings. We catalog existing transfer pathways, efforts to align curricula across institutions, obstacles to overcome with minimally disruptive solutions, and approaches to foster these pathways. Improvements in these areas are critically important to ensure that a broad and diverse set of students are able to engage and succeed in undergraduate data science programs
Comparison of Caregiver- and Child-Reported Quality of Life in Children With Sleep-Disordered Breathing
Objective: Caregivers frequently report poor quality of life (QOL) in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Our objective is to assess the correlation between caregiver- and child-reported QOL in children with mild SDB and identify factors associated with differences between caregiver and child report. Study Design: Analysis of baseline data from a multi-institutional randomized trial. Setting: Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring, where children with mild SDB (obstructive apnea-hypopnea index \u3c3) were randomized to observation or adenotonsillectomy. Methods: The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) assessed baseline global QOL in participating children 5 to 12 years old and their caregivers. Caregiver and child scores were compared. Multivariable regression assessed whether clinical factors were associated with differences between caregiver and child report. Results: PedsQL scores were available for 309 families (mean child age, 7.0 years). The mean caregiver-reported PedsQL score was higher at 75.2 (indicating better QOL) than the mean child-reported score of 67.9 (P \u3c.001). The agreement between caregiver and child total PedsQL scores was poor, with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.03 (95% CI, –0.09 to 0.15) for children 5 to 7 years old and 0.21 (95% CI, 0.03-0.38) for children 8 to 12 years old. Higher child age and health literacy were associated with closer agreement between caregiver and child report. Conclusion: Caregiver- and child-reported global QOL in children with SDB was weakly correlated, more so for young children. In pediatric SDB, child-perceived QOL may be poorer than that reported by caregivers. Further research is needed to assess whether similar trends exist for disease-specific QOL metrics

Bridging the Gap: Developing Self-Rolling Azlactone Hydrogels for Nerve Injury Applications
The current treatments for peripheral nerve injuries are inadequate in restoring neuronal functionality and can result in negative side effects including donor-site morbidity and tissue rejection. An alternative treatment method that is currently being explored is the usage of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) that can bridge the gap between the severed nerve endings. In this thesis work, the utility of hydrogels consisting of poly(2-vinyl-4,4’-dimethyl azlactone) (PVDMA) crosslinked with Jeffamine 600 to act as NGCs was explored. Subsequently, self-rolling tubes that resemble 3D tubular NGCs were formed by fabricating hydrogel bilayers with distinct crosslinking densities. These self-rolling tubes provide a scaffold ideal for nerve regeneration without requiring harsh external chemical or mechanical cues such as sacrificial layers. Additionally, the hydrogel systems were topographically patterned by imprinting ridges into the hydrogels, creating a mechanical guidance cue that could direct cells to migrate in a specific direction. Due to the reactive residual azlactone groups present in these hydrogels, they could be selectively conjugated with bioactive compounds such as proteins and polypeptides.
