Contributing to the Prevention of Wildlife-Related Pandemics by Targeting the Risks of Transmission of Disease Agents in Southeast Asia - UNJP/RAS/398/EC

    No full text
Emerging infectious diseases have the potential to lead to global health emergencies with devastating loss of human life and far-reaching socio-economic impacts. Risk management for the potential spillover of zoonotic pathogens from wildlife remains a critical area for the prevention of the next pandemic. There is therefore a need for increased engagement and commitment from all stakeholders involved in the wildlife value chain and investment in sustainable risk reduction practices. In this context, the Safety Across Asia for the Global Environment (SAFE) project aimed to reduce the risk of wildlife-related pandemic spillover to livestock and humans and mitigate their associated impacts whilst strengthening partnerships and joint efforts between the European Union, the United Nations, ASEAN and partner countries. In order to achieve this objective, the SAFE project was structured around three key outputs, namely (i) identification of high-risk facilities for possible zoonotic viruses in four priority Asian countries (China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thailand and Viet Nam), with the present FAO-specific component focusing on field activities in Viet Nam, (ii) the adoption of national policies to prevent wildlife-related zoonotic diseases and (iii) the adoption of regional biosafety standards and joint strategies within ASEAN
