    Gender and age are critical sociodemographic determinants of pesticide use, management and exposure. This paper examines pesticide use among farmers and farm workers in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Türkiye, based on farmer surveys and expert interviews conducted under the GEF/FAO project “Pesticide Life Cycle Management and Disposal in Central Asia and Türkiye” (GCP/SEC/011/GFF) in 2020 and 2021. Despite limitations in dataset representativeness and cross-country comparability, the findings underscore the roles of women and children in pesticide handling, an issue often overlooked in formal assessments. While pesticide application and decision-making are predominantly carried out by men, there is strong evidence of women’s and children’s exposure. Moreover, women’s overrepresentation in unpaid and informal agricultural labour translates into underreported pesticide application. Concerningly, due to financial barriers and mobility constraints, women rely on inexpensive and unregulated products available in their local communities. The study also highlights the widespread lack of personal protective equipment among both genders, further contributing to health risks. This paper identifies inadequate pesticide management practices, pinpointing significant risk factors and knowledge gaps throughout the pesticide life cycle among farming household members. These findings indicate an urgent need for improved pesticide management policies and targeted training programmes tailored to the needs of women and men

    يهدف هذا المشروع، الذي طورته منظمة الأغذية والزراعة للأمم المتحدة (الفاو) وشركاء دوليون وأصحاب المصلحة في البلدان، إلى دعم الجهود والبرامج الوطنية للحد من انتشار سوسة النخيل الحمراء وتأثيرها. وقد وضعت الفاو إطارًا للتعاون وتنسيق الجهود على المستوى الإقليمي لدعم برامج الإدارة المتكاملة والمستدامة لسوسة النخيل الحمراء والحد من آثارها المدمرة على البيئة والأمن الغذائي، وتأثيرها الاجتماعي والاقتصادي على المجتمعات الريفية.يركز البرنامج على وضع سياسات ولوائح الصحة النباتية للسيطرة على انتشار سوسة النخيل الحمراء، ودعم البحوث والنهج المبتكرة لرصد الآفة، وتطوير أساليب الإدارة المستدامة، ودراسة الآثار الاجتماعية والاقتصادية للسوسة، ودعم تنمية القدرات، وتعزيز مشاركة المزارعين وأصحاب المصلحة الآخرين، وتسهيل نقل المعرفة والتكنولوجيا في مجالات الإدارة المتكاملة للآفات ونظم الصحة النباتية، وتعزيز نظم إكثار النخيل المعتمدة.صُممت الدراسات ومهام العمل لخمس مجموعات عمل فنية تُركز على هذه المجالات، وحُددت 15 حزمة عمل كأولويات للعمل عليها. خُصصت الأموال لتمويل تنفيذ هذه البرامج. وشُكِّلت لجان وأمانات إقليمية للبرامج، وجهات تنسيق وطنية من 18 دولة في الشرق الأدنى وشمال أفريقيا

    El control de brotes epidémicos de moscas sierra (MS) en los bosques de coníferas es complicado debido a que son áreas naturales lejanas, de no fácil acceso y terrenos escarpados, por tal razón se realizan acciones de combate vía aérea ya sea con avioneta o helicóptero. Actualmente Se aplican agentes de control microbiano como Bacillus thuringiensis y hongos entomopatógenos Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae y Paecilomyces liliacinus, aunque efectivos, son generalistas y pueden afectar a otros organismos no objeto de control, por lo cual se buscan agentes más específicos como los Virus de Poliedrosis Nuclear (VPN). Se estableció un proyecto financiado con la CONAFOR para buscar y evaluar los VPN presentes en las poblaciones de MS. Se recolectaron larvas en 14 estados, las larvas sospechosas de infección viral, se manejaron en viales en forma seca y se trasladaron al Colegio de Posgraduados donde se observaron muestras de tejido en un microscopio de contraste de fases para observar la presencia de cuerpos brillantes indicativo de la presencia de VPN. Debido a que no se pueden criar masivamente las MS se optó por la generación de líneas de células para la conservación de los VPN. Se obtuvieron seis cepas de VPN de cinco localidades 1) Pueblo Nuevo Durango, 2) Zehuaran y 3) Guachochi ambas de Chihuahua, 4) Ixtapan Zihuatanejo y 5) Ixcateopan de Cuauhtémoc ambas de Guerrero y 6) Miquihuana, Tamaulipas. Las cepas 1, 2, 3, 4 y 6 aisladas de Zadiprion spp. mientras que la cepa 5 se aisló de Monoctenus sp. Mediante bioensayos se observó que cuatro produjeron mortalidad y multiplicación de poliedros y la cepa más agresiva fue la 4 que incluso ocasiono mortalidad en Monoctenus. Se obtuvieron líneas de células de Monoctenus, Neodiprion y Zadiprion que se mantuvieron viables por más de cuatro meses y se conservaron en crioperservación y una línea de células epiteliales del intestino de Zadiprion ojedae.Palabras clave: Entomopatógenos, Defoliaciones, Zadiprion, Neodiprion, MonoctenusID: 348727

    Indonesia songbird trade has been widely popular and followed by the raise of songbirds trafficking that have been on the rise for the past few years. Understanding the songbird trade can be very expensive and time-consuming. An alternative approach to understanding the songbird market is to use a big data approach, by monitoring the online songbird trade. In this study, we are collecting information about songbird trade including location, date and price from a marketplace to understand online songbird trade and its distribution. All records from advertisement interpreted using automated text classification for species identification and classified using list of protected and endangered species from Government of Indonesia and IUCN to understand trade of songbird based on conservation status. As result, from a total of 12,678 advertisements, we found 10,743 related to the songbird individuals where the rest are related to poultry, feed and birdkeeping equipment. Total 10,810 songbird’s individual from 141 species, 46 families, and 11 orders were advertised within 1 month of observation. The most frequently advertised species were Lovebirds (Agapornis spp.), White-rumped Shamas (Copsychus malabaricus), Island canaries (Serinus canaria), Zebra Doves (Geopelia striata), and Oriental Magpie-robins (Copsychus saularis). These five most frequently advertised species represented approximately 70% of all individuals. The songbird’s advertisement comprising total offering price of 10.17 billion IDR or about 0.73 million USD. We found 687 bird individuals from 29 species, 12 families, and two ordos are Near Threatened (344), Vulnerable (160), Endangered (112), Critically Endangered (71) based on IUCN Red List. 201 bird individuals from 17 species, 9 families, and 3 orders are protected bird species according Government of Indonesia Regulation No. P106/2018 about Protected Species.Keywords: Songbird, Online Trade, Machine Learning, BiodiversityID: 348665
