The impact of voluntary sustainability standards on banana exports
With the growing use of voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) covering agricultural production processes, there is also increasing interest in understanding the impact that these standards have on trade. Empirical evidence is needed because a priori there are theoretical reasons why VSS may promote or hinder trade. This paper analyses banana trade data using a gravity model and adds to the available evidence that VSS increase the likelihood of exporting bananas and the value of banana exports. The impact is larger depending on the quantity exported. The estimated elasticity of the value of banana exports to VSS ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 for certified producers, 0.4 to 0.7 for certificate holders and 0.2 to 0.3 for certified areas. The findings are very similar to those generated by earlier studies. This study adds value in that it provides estimates of the elasticity of banana exports to a variety of VSS. The results show that the estimates for GlobalGAP, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certificate holders are all quite similar. In addition, the estimates are also relatively close for the different indicators for VSS used, i.e. certificate holders, certified producers and area certified. With regard to GlobalGAP certification, the results show a stronger impact for middle-income countries than for high- or low-income countries
Principles and strategic actions
Damaging wildfires in many parts of the world in recent years have prompted an increase in demand for technical support for integrated fire management. As part of the response, FAO and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Global Fire Management Hub (Fire Hub), which was launched at the 8th International Wildland Fire Conference in May 2023. The aim of the Fire Hub is to strengthen the capacity of countries to implement integrated fire management and reduce the negative effects of wildfires on people, landscapes and the global climate. One of the Fire Hub’s first activities was to update FAO’s Fire Management Voluntary Guidelines: Principles and strategic actions, which was first published in 2006, to guide implementation of integrated fire management at the landscape level, enhance best fire-management practices, including cultural practices for sustainable land use, and engage diverse stakeholders. This second edition of the guidelines, now titled, Integrated Fire Management Voluntary Guidelines: Principles and strategic actions, benefited from contributions from the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC), the International Liaison Committee of the International Wildland Fire Conferences, and Regional Fire Management Resource Centers of the GFMC’s Global Wildland Fire Network. In addition, FAO engaged with experts in countries and specialized partner institutions for insights into new developments and solutions in integrated fire management

Pesticides use and trade: methodological changes and exploration of alternative data sources
Pesticides are a key agricultural input needed to protect seeds and safeguard crops from unwanted plants, insects, bacteria, fungi and rodents. Geographically and temporally comparable statistics on pesticides use and trade are important for policymakers and researchers to address potential environmental and human health risks and to reduce vulnerability to crop losses from disease and infestation. The methodological work in this paper ensures consistent dissemination of pesticides use data in active ingredients by reconciling time series reported in formulated products
Good agricultural practices for cultivating local fava bean crop

Policy brief. Chinese experience on digitalization of rural areas and poverty alleviation
China has extensive experience in digital transformation as a means to reduce poverty rates in rural areas. This technical document analyses the role of the government in this process, outlines the key elements for building an e-commerce ecosystem, and provides recommendations for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The information presented in the text aims to motivate policymakers and other stakeholders in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to design recovery projects that, through the digitalization of rural areas and agriculture, address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises on rural livelihoods and food systems
