Improving Productivity and Reducing Poverty of Small-Scale Milk and Dairy Producers in Rural Villages in Beheira and Minya - TCP/EGY/3805
Small livestock farmers produce 89 percent of Egypt's milk but face significant challenges in animal feeding, health, processing, and marketing, which hinder productivity and product quality. Key issues include the need for adequate feed, quality veterinary services, and measures to prevent diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD). Improving milk and dairy product quality requires better integration of smallholders into the value chain, enhanced collection, processing, and marketing systems. Along with enforced governmental action, collaboration among non-governmental organizations (NGOs), cooperatives, local authorities, universities, research centres, and private companies is crucial. The proposed interventions aim to improve the performance of the dairy value chain and its products in the prominent governorates in dairy production in Upper and Lower Egypt.Capacity building for civil society organizations, farmer leaders, and small milk producers is essential. In Lower Egypt, particularly in Gharbia, improving cooperative associations' institutional capacity is vital for resource utilization and market negotiation. In the Lao People's Democratic Republic, 80 percent of the rural population are subsistence farmers. Stronger agriculture systems are essential for the country to attain food and nutrition security, reduce poverty, and achieve the government’s vision of a developing country of upper-middle income with innovative, green and sustainable economic growth by 2030. The country’s agriculture sector is exposed to multiple risks: climatic, biological and economic. Flood, drought and storm are the most prevalent natural hazards, and are expected to become more intense and more frequent with climate change. Vulnerability of agriculture systems in the country is driven by a number of factors, including geographically scattered production due to the country’s topography and weak linkages to urban populations and regional markets; and a heavy dependency of the population on agriculture and natural resources as a source of employment, income and food, among others. Against this background, the "Building Climate-Resilient and Eco-Friendly Agriculture Systems and Livelihoods in Lao People's Democratic Republic" project or Climate REAL project, sought to enhance resilience to climate-related disasters and environmental sustainability of agriculture systems and livelihoods in three districts of Attapeu Province, one of the most marginalized and remote provinces in the country

Access to funding and technical assistance for forest and smallholder farm producers and enterprises to accelerate restoration-based value added innovation, with focus on Africa
L’initiative pour la restauration des paysages forestiers africain (AFR100) est un partenariat entre 34 pays africains qui se sont engagés à restaurer au moins 100 millions d’hectares de terres dégradées d’ici à 2030. Ce programme de quatre ans, dirigé par l'Organisation des Nations unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO) et financé par le gouvernement allemand avec un budget de EUR 40 millions, soutiendra l'ambition de l'AFR100. Il contribuera à accélérer la restauration et l’innovation à valeur ajoutée en fournissant aux organisations de petits producteurs forestiers et agricoles une assistance financière et technique directe. Il renforcera la capacité de gouvernance des communautés locales et les aidera à accroître leur capacité à suivre et à communiquer les résultats des restaurations et à partager les enseignements tirés. Il contribuera également à la création d’entreprises de restauration et d’emplois verts, à l’amélioration des moyens de subsistance et au développement de la résilience au changement climatique dans des paysages sélectionnés dans les pays de l’AFR100

Emergency Response to Locust Infestation on Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia - TCP/INS/3902
East Sumba, Indonesia, revolves around the persistent and severe outbreaks of the locust species Locusta migratoria manilensis (commonly known as the Migratory Locust). These outbreaks have been a recurring problem in the region, with the first significant outbreak recorded between 1997 and 1998, leading to widespread destruction of crops and subsequent food insecurity. The locusts primarily affect green leafy crops, including food and vegetable crops, causing devastating impacts on agricultural productivity and livelihoods. The locust problem has persisted over the years, with annual outbreaks typically occurring after the rainy season from April to July. The current outbreak began in 2019 and has since expanded beyond East Sumba to Central, West, and Southwest Sumba. By early 2022, significant damage had been recorded, affecting thousands of hectares of crops, including maize, rice, and peanuts. In some cases, locusts have even attacked coconut plants. Local communities and government agencies have employed various control measures, such as mechanical collection of locusts and the use of chemical insecticides. However, these efforts have been hampered by limited resources, logistical challenges, and the sheer scale of the locust infestations. As a result, the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia requested technical support from the FAO to address the ongoing crisis
