Governance and resilience as entry points for transforming food systems in the countdown to 2030

Due to complex interactions, changes in any one area of food systems are likely to impact—and possibly depend on—changes in other areas. Here we present the first annual monitoring update of the indicator framework proposed by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative, with new qualitative analysis elucidating interactions across indicators. Since 2000, we find that 20 of 42 indicators with time series have been trending in a desirable direction, indicating modest positive change. Qualitative expert elicitation assessed governance and resilience indicators to be most connected to other indicators across themes, highlighting entry points for action—particularly governance action. Literature review and country case studies add context to the assessed interactions across diets, environment, livelihoods, governance and resilience indicators, helping different actors understand and navigate food systems towards desirable change

    Tiny soil detectives report

In celebration of World Soil Day (WSD) 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), its Global Soil Partnership (GSP), the European Union through its EU Mission, “A Soil Deal for Europe” and the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) are launching the “Tiny soil detectives” contest, ending 31 October 2025. This contest invited young people to explore the hidden world beneath their feet. Urban soils may seem invisible, but they cool our streets, soak up rainwater, grow food, and sustain life: even in the tiniest cracks.Through fun, hands-on experiments, kids became “urban soil detectives,” observing, testing and documenting their discoveries to uncover how soil shapes life in their neighbourhoods. 150 fourth-grade students at the Ellinogermaniki agogi school in Greece observed, tested and documented their discoveries to uncover how soil shapes life in their neighbourhoods. Their submission was selected by a committee to win for its creativity, adherence to theme (healthy soils for healthy cities), and spirit of scientific inquiry

This learning brief documents the experiences and insights gained from the third phase of the United Nations Joint Action for Building Resilience in Somalia (JRP III), a multi-agency initiative implemented in the Gedo region. Since 2018, the programme – funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through KfW Development Bank – has aimed to improve health, nutrition, education, and food security for vulnerable communities. Initially focused on integrated service delivery across 80 villages, JRP expanded in 2022 to include food security and livelihoods programming, with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) joining the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) in a more holistic approach. JRP III emphasized convergence across sectors to strengthen community resilience, particularly among internally displaced people (IDPs). FAO launched a dedicated learning initiative to ensure that evidence and knowledge generated through JRP III would inform future programming and policy decisions. This aligns with FAO Somalia’s broader knowledge management and learning strategy, which promotes the systematic capture and dissemination of sustainable solutions to food crises. The learning brief highlights promising practices, such as integrated livelihood packages, people-centred approaches and climate-smart innovative tools, that have contributed to improved stability and self-reliance among displaced populations. Using qualitative data and lived experiences, the learning process provided rich, contextual insights into what works in fragile settings. These findings aim to support institutional learning, guide resource allocation, and enhance the impact of resilience-building efforts across Somalia and similar contexts
