The webinar "Integrated Solutions for Plant Health in Banana Production Systems", organized by the World Banana Forum (WBF) under the TR4 Global Network, brought together research institutions, producer organizations, technology providers and private sector actors to explore integrated, science-based approaches to managing banana pests and diseases. Presentations showcased complementary strategies across scales and production systems, including integrated pest management (IPM) in commercial plantations, advances in drone-based spraying and surveillance, biological control agents, agroecological practices in organic smallholder systems, digital decision-support tools, and AI-powered disease detection platforms. Case studies from Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean illustrated how biological inputs, precision agriculture, resistant varieties, soil health management and real-time data can reduce chemical dependence while maintaining productivity and compliance with residue requirements. The discussions underscored that no single solution is sufficient: effective plant health management requires integrated strategies combining cultural, biological and chemical control methods, supported by technology deployment and capacity development. The webinar also highlighted that knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration across the banana value chain are essential to strengthen resilience, sustainability and livelihoods in the face of evolving phytosanitary threat

Innovation and technology for achieving resilient and inclusive rural transformation

    No full text
This paper examines the shifts needed in the development, adoption and scaling of innovation and technology to achieve resilient and inclusive rural transformation across farming systems and value chains. It analyzes opportunities for innovations to generate rural employment, improve smallholder farmer livelihoods, alleviate malnutrition and address the impacts of climate change. The paper identifies five key levers of change that include: (i) a renewed focus on long-term investment in participatory, equity-sensitive and gender-responsive agricultural R&D, (ii) ensuring that marginalized voices are heard, (iii) promoting equitable access to technology, (iv) leveling the playing field by curbing corporate dominance while encouraging private sector support for small- and medium-scale agrifood enterprises, and (v) prioritizing rural employment amid automation and evolving value chains

    No full text
This document is the report of the second electronic monitoring (EM) implementation workshop on the implementation of EM systems and the development of regional standards that improve fisheries sustainability, compliance, and the monitoring of IUU fishing. The workshop was held from 10 to 12 December 2024 in San Sebastián, Spain, and was organized by the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF). It focused on the adoption of minimum EM standards by four tuna RFMOs (IATTC, IOTC, ICCAT and WCPFC) and national-level initiatives, such as capacity development and roadmaps for EM implementation. It also highlighted opportunities for technical harmonization, practical application, and follow-up actions to strengthen EM systems, enhance observer coverage, and support sustainable, transparent, and ecosystem-responsible tuna fisheries management
