Prisoners’ Rights in India: A Human Rights Perspective

    No full text
The most significant document pertaining to prisoner’s rights are the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (presently titled as Nelson Mandela Rules). As far as prisoners’ rights in India is concerned, the Constitution does not explicitly mention about their rights, but the judiciary has been instrumental in protecting the rights of prisoners by giving a liberal interpretation to Article 21 of the Constitution to include their rights within the ambit of the provision. The Model Prison Manual, 2016 and Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 have been drafted by the government to give impetus to prison reforms and effectively implement the Nelson Mandela Rules in India. Despite the dominance of India in the economic and democratic front globally, it is fraught with an ineffective adjudication process in its criminal justice system resulting in denial of rights to the accused. The paper delves into the legal framework that governs human rights of prisoner vis-à-vis under trial prisoners in jails along with the predicaments of undertrials. It analyses the secondary data sources that include Prison Statistics Report- 2022, newspaper reports as well as information from digital platforms like the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) and National Prison Portal (NPP) to augment the study. Furthermore, from data collected through the Right to Information Act, 2005 it seeks to provide an insight into the lacunae in the Indian criminal justice system as it fails f to provide respite to under trials, with respect to grant of bail sans conviction by a court of law

Conceptualizing "Demonic Possession" Today: Jettisoning Traditional Christian Interpretations

    No full text
The author evaluates the traditional Christian understanding of "demonic possession," which necessitates an exploration of the "paranormal" phenomena that reportedly occur with the condition. After explaining how the symptoms of "possession" can be accounted for, the author shows the DSM-5 nomenclature provides appropriate diagnostic categories for this dissociative and/or conversion condition, and that the psychological literature allows one to conceptualize “demonic possession" in a meaningful way. The author then reveals a way to bring together a modern religious and psychological understanding of "demonic possession" that jettisons traditional Christian interpretations, as well as offers concluding commentary on the findings

Relationship between the Altman Z Score and Stock Prices of Indian Manufacturing Firms

PurposeThis study investigates the relationship between the Altman Z-Score and stock prices of Indian manufacturing firms to evaluate its efficacy as a predictor of financial distress and aid in investment decision-making. MethodologyThe research employed an explanatory design, analyzing financial data of 18 randomly selected listed manufacturing firms in India over five years. Altman Z-Scores were calculated using financial ratios, and their trends were compared with stock price movements. Hypothesis testing was conducted to establish correlations between Z-Scores and stock prices. Findings The analysis revealed that the Altman Z-Score effectively predicts corporate financial health. Firms with declining Z-Scores showed signs of financial instability, often entering the distress zone, while firms with stable or improving Z-Scores demonstrated financial resilience. A significant correlation was observed between Z-Scores and stock price trends, underscoring its predictive reliability. Practical Implications The Altman Z-Score provides investors and corporate decision-makers with a robust tool for assessing financial health, identifying warning signs of potential distress, and formulating strategic responses. It also supports more informed investment choices based on a company’s financial stability. Future Research DirectionFurther studies can expand the application of the Altman Z-Score to other industries, integrate non-financial variables such as management practices, and compare its predictive accuracy with alternative financial models across diverse economic context

Thermal Analysis of a Reactive Third Grade Fluid Film Flow on a Vertically Moving Heated Belt

    No full text
Grasping the thermal behavior of a reactive non-Newtonian thin film flows on a vertically upward moving heated belt is crucial for refining predictive models used in engineering applications like coating and lubrication processes. This study investigates the thermal stability of a reactive third-grade fluid thin film flow on a heated moving belt with an adiabatic free surface. It assumes an exothermic reaction based on Arrhenius kinetics, while ignoring material consumption. The coupled system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved using a perturbation approach combined with a specialized Hermite–Pade´ approximation technique. The paper investigates key features of the overall flow structure, including velocity and temperature fields, thermal criticality, and bifurcations

India As A Medical Tourism Destination: A Case Study Of Ahmedabad City

    No full text
Medical tourism has not seen similar opportunities for growth across Indian cities. In spite of emerging research on the topic, there exists a lack of studies on medical tourism in cities like Ahmedabad. This study aims to analyse specific insights into India as a medical tourism destination, factors affecting the choice of city and hospital for medical tourists and challenges and opportunities for Ahmedabad city in the context of medical tourism. This study has collected data using in-depth interviews of foreign patients undergoing treatments in various hospitals of Ahmedabad. By analysing the interview data, we conclude that India has great potential as a medical tourism hub because of good healthcare infrastructure, quality care of patients, cost-effectiveness, experienced doctors, English-speaking staff, fewer waiting periods, etc. Family and friends, agents, doctors who have previously worked in developed nations, hospitals that have branches or affiliation with hospitals in foreign nations, etc., are the major factors affecting the choice of city and hospital for treatment. International patients coming to Ahmedabad face challenges related to discrimination, warm weather, non-vegetarian food, etc. Opportunities for Ahmedabad include a lower cost of living as compared to Indian metro cities, the possibility of optimum management of scarce but significant resources like blood, and the huge Gujarati diaspora across the world that can serve as a vital link for international medical tourism in Ahmedabad. This study provides significant implications for future researchers, hospital administration and staff, international medical tourists, government and policy-makers, allied service providers in medical tourism, etc

Factors affecting the adoption of CBDCs for financial transactions

    No full text
One important development in payments and finance is the emergence of central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs. India is at a turning point in its contemplation of implementing CBDCs because of its quickly expanding digital economy. Through primary research and data analysis, this study investigates the factors impacting the use of CBDCs for financial transactions in India. A mixed-approaches research methodology is used in this work, integrating quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Aspects of CBDC adoption such as awareness, attitudes, perceived benefits, and concerns are all included in the survey questionnaire. The findings focus on privacy issues and lack of awareness in CBDC adoption tactics

Consumer Behaviour and Nutrition Trends in Dining at Restaurants, Cafes, and Kiosks: A Systematic Review

    No full text
Background: The informality of eating out has been steadily increasing, and with consumers spending significantly, there’s a heightened demand for value. Beyond just the food, consumers now seek additional features, including efficient service, appealing decor, a pleasant ambiance, and high-quality, varied food options. Consequently, many food outlets are actively observing current dining trends to better serve their clientele.  Objectives: The broad objective of this review article is to highlight the factors that influence consumer behaviour while dining at a food outlet. Specifically, this study aims to explore consumer behavior, prevailing nutrition trends, and the factors affecting consumer choices when selecting an eating establishment. Methodology: A comprehensive search using different databases was conducted for relevant literature on the topic. A final pool of 40 studies of the food establishment business was analyzed and discussed. Results: The reviewed studies indicate that due to increasingly busy lifestyles and a rise in per capita income, dining out has become a more casual and frequent occurrence. Consumers select food outlets based on various factors, including their lifestyle, income, age, location, and occupation. Therefore, an eating establishment can be effectively designed and planned by considering the lifestyle and income demographics of the population within a specific area
