And: Reflections on the Conjunction of Literature and Philosophy

    No full text
This article takes the conjunction “and” as the starting point for a reflection on the relationship between literature and philosophy. It posits that these discourses might be distinguished in terms of their orientation towards questions of truth and reference, and their hospitality to figuration. The article highlights the need for modes of reading that allow us to work with the metaphor of truth, through a brief discussion of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s approach to riddles. Finally, it examines Barbara Cassin’s notion of “philosophizing in languages,” and invites discussion on the possibility of such a practice in the context of India’s current academic landscape

Changing Caste-Class Dynamics in Rajasthan’s Agrarian Landscape

    Get PDF
This article examines the evolving interrelationship between caste hierarchies and class formations within Rajasthan’s agrarian political economy, focusing on post-independence transformations that have shaped the traditional power structure. It engages with the political and economic perspective while borrowing insights from John Harriss (1982) and Purendra Prasad (2014). Drawing upon government reports, contemporary events, and historical context, the paper argues that caste and class relations in Rajasthan mutually constitute social and power relations that are continuously reconfigured through patterns of resource distribution, economic diversification, and political mobilization. The postcolonial economic processes, along with political transformation, have precipitated significant challenges to the dominance of upper castes while creating opportunities for intermediate castes to translate agrarian capital into political influence. Different social mobility patterns of castes like Jats, Yadav, and Gujjars have leveraged agricultural surplus for entry into bureaucracy and market spaces, while Dalits, even with enhanced political representation, continue to experience structural vulnerabilities. Similarly, the tribes have also articulated their distinct position within Rajasthan’s social structure. Finally, the paper ends by demonstrating how traditional social categories are renegotiated within the changing agrarian contexts, economic processes, and political contestation

An exploration of the political, economic and social dimensions of South Africa’s bilateral relations with China

    No full text
Despite its contemporary challenges, China remains a dominant actor in world politics as the second-largest economy in the world after the United States. The country is pivotal in global politics and the world economy, representing developing and emerging economies. African nations like South Africa now look to China for political and economic cooperation and developmental aspirations. China remains Africa’s largest trade partner, with South Africa being its most important ally. In this regard, South Africa’s engagement with China has become one of the most debated aspects of its activism in bilateral relations. As the bilateral relations between the two countries intensify, questions are being asked: 'What has South Africa benefited from its relations with China?' ‘Has the country reaped any political, economic or social benefits from these relations?' Many attempts have been made to provide answers to these questions. Problematically, the majority of these attempts have been based on generalisations drawn from media reports and uninformed public opinions. Therefore, thisarticle explores the political, economic, and social aspects of South Africa’s bilateral relations with China to provide amore nuanced picture of this bilateral relationship. In doing this, the paper engages 20 participants with knowledge andexpertise on South Africa-China relations. The information gathered from these engagements was supplemented witha literature review on the relationship between the two countries

    No full text
This research paper consolidates the current literature on the convergence of the Metaverse, Tourism, and the Hospitality sector. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, the study thoroughly examined 137 papers from the Scopus Database, eventually selecting 22 relevant sources. A content analysis was used to investigate the subtle details of studies connected to the Metaverse in the context of tourism. The study revealed that there was a strong emphasis on conceptual and qualitative approaches, which indicates that the integration of the Metaverse in these businesses is still in its early stages. The findings notably emphasise a lack of research in essential sub-domains such as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), cultural heritage, and tourism marketing. This highlights the necessity for additional exploration and empirical research in these domains to fully comprehend the diverse influence of the Metaverse on the tourist and hospitality industry. This research enhances our understanding of the changing interactions between the Metaverse and traditional sectors, providing valuable insights for academic researchers and industry professionals

A Review of Nano-Structured Thermites and Explosives: Synthesis and Emerging Applications

    No full text
Lead-based primary explosives are highly common in the military, mining and pyrotechnics. However, lead is non-biodegradable and poses a serious threat to the environment and living beings. Lead is a potent neurotoxin that causes organ damage and affects cognitive development in humans. It contaminates the air, water and soil, thereby affecting the flora and fauna through bioaccumulation and food chain contamination. It is also notorious for degrading soil fertility and biodiversity. The search for a greener alternative landed on nanostructured materials, fuelling considerable research in this domain. Although their large-scale manufacturing is challenging, these materials promise enhanced performance, safety and reliability over existing systems. The SFE method has been identified as a major breakthrough in facilitating mass-scale manufacturing of such explosive nanoparticles with decent productivity. Coating these nanoparticles with nanothermites resulted in a benign alternative with improved performance over traditional lead-based explosives, called NSTEX. This eliminates the risk of lead contamination while also improving the explosive performance. Despite the success of this system, stabilising these mixtures into operational systems has remained a challenge, hindering its application. A breakthrough in this aspect could be a significant step forward in greener and safer pyrotechnics for the future
