Some Recent Biblical Re-writings in English and the Contemporary “Canonical” Images of the Bible
This paper focuses on three contemporary Anglophone rewritings of the Bible (i.e., on Philip Pullman’s The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ (2010), Jeanette Winterson’s Boating for Beginners (1985), and on Jim Crace’s Quarantine (1997)) and contends that the rewrites can be read against the background of the late twentieth-century emergence of dominant understandings of the Bible: of the Bible as a cultural icon and of the Bible as an epitome of liberal/human values. Those dominant – or “canonical” – images of the Bible prefer either to foreground the role the Bible played in the formation of Western culture and democracy, and/or to play down the more scandalous, less palatable features of biblical texts. While the dominant images embody the currently most popular and culturally orthodox perspectives on the meaning of the Bible, other concerns and perspectives are relegated to the margins of interest. Seeing some parallels between such contemporary processes of marginalisation/promotion and the past mechanisms of biblical canon-formation, I argue that the recent biblical rewritings re-enact the process of forgetting, suppressing or proscribing alternative accounts of biblical events, and simultaneously, bring into sharp focus and problematize its twentieth- and twenty-first-century form of canonicity
Count Philip Kinsky, the British Ministers, and Society: Social and Political Networks of an Imperial Diplomat in London, 1728–1735
This article analyses parts of the framework that determined the diplomatic mission of Count Philip Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau (1700–1749) in London from 1728 to 1736. In 1728, Emperor Charles VI decided to send Count Kinsky to the court of King George II of Great Britain to re-establish diplomatic relations. The aims of Kinsky’s mission to London were challenging, and his inexperience as well as the conflicting political aims of Charles VI and George II complicated matters at first. But over time, the count was able to establish himself and his household in the relevant social and political networks. The study presents the contacts of the imperial diplomat to the opposition, his acceptance into the Royal Society as well as the freemasons, and the use of his position and standing in London society especially during the War of the War of the Polish Succession (1733–1735).This article analyses parts of the framework that determined the diplomatic mission of Count Philip Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau (1700–1749) in London from 1728 to 1736. RESEARCH ON DEMAND FOR BUS TRANSPORT AND TRANSPORT HABITS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ŽILINA REGION
Poznanie správania sa tejto skupiny cestujúcich môže napomôcť k zabezpečeniu vhodnej ponuky a kvality dopravnej obslužnosti, čo môže následne stabilizovať dopyt po VOD.The paper deals with the analysis of demand for bus transport to examine determinants of demand and practices of high school students based on survey of their transport habits in Žilina Region. Transport habits of students are individual and variable in time. This group of passengers is dependent on public passenger transport services because of their travelling to schools. Significant part of demand for public passenger transport is also formed by this this group of passengers. The knowledge of student´s transport habits may help in process of adaptation of offering and quality of transport serviceability, what may subsequently stabilize demand for public passenger transport

Tato doporučení směřují především k optimalizaci technologických procesů a zabránění omezení překládkových operací.This article deals with internal audit of technological processes and its implementation to the container terminal environment. In this area, there were identified risks, there were assigned to their owners and there were formulated recommendations to their elimination. These recommendations course to technic
AIR TRANSPORT DEMAND AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
The paper deals with often discussed issue of air transport demand. It describes the relationship between air transport demand and economic activity on the case of the Czech Republic. The paper concerns only on main civil airports designated for international traffic and specific macroeconomic values which describes the economic situation of the country. In each case there was found some kind of relationship between transportation performances and economic activity. The relationship was either direct or inverse, with different level of intensity
DECOMPOSITION OF THE TOUR USING MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING
Route-First Cluster-Sedond přístupu. To solve tasks focused on the vertex service of the transport network, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the optimal sequence of vertices with respect to the selected optimization criterion (e.g. the total distance traveled), but also to other limitations that follow from the practical needs. The submitted contribution deals with introducing a decomposition method using mathematical programming based on the Route-First Cluster-Second approach. Firstly, the optimal route of the service vehicle is determined and then it can be decomposed into partial tours taking into account the capacity of the service vehicle. Mathematical models that can be used to implement this approach are presented in the text. The whole decomposition procedure is illustrated by specific examples, too
The Atheism, Agnosticism and Criticism of Religion of Robert Ingersoll in the Context of the Czech Freethinking Movement
In the American society in the 19th century, still prevailingly Christian, proclamations of faithlessness and calls for a purely scientific worldview occasionally appeared. Religion was perceived as an obstacle to efforts toward scientific materialism. A leading representative and popularizer of such an attitude was the American humanist, thinker, orator and lawyer Robert Green Ingersoll, whose works have been translated into many languages, including Czech. Ingersoll became a very popular figure, inspiring freethought circles both in the United States and in Europe. As a keen critic of religion, he ranked among the key American advocates for free thought, humanism, and the propagation of scientific knowledge. The paper discusses his specific form of faithlessness (agnosticism rather than atheism) and introduces a typology categorizing strategies of his criticism of the religious worldview in the context of Czech intellectual and freethinking movement of the first third of the 20th century
Turning History into a Fairy Tale: The Borders of Reality and Fiction in Catherynne Valente’s Deathless
This article explores the parallels between the classic Russian fairy tale Marya Morevna and its reimagining in Catherynne Valente’s Deathless. The authors claim that the novel follows the pattern of the postmodern reinterpretation of fairy tales and provide a thorough analysis of the characters, setting, style and other phenomena supporting this claim. The novel simultaneously addresses the themes of political and social criticism of early Soviet Russia, resulting in the ironic tone and satirical comments provided by the author. The literary analysis strives to answer the question ‘how is this fairy tale combined with history?’ The novel transcends the genre of a fairy tale retelling and functions as a novel filled with historical references and subjective commentary on the political and the social situation
Montecuccoli’s Fame, or: A Diplomat’s Military Reputation at the Swedish Court in 1654
This article is about the weight of military fame in the inaugural audience of Imperial general and diplomat Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609–1680) at the Swedish court in 1654. The assumption is, that Montecuccoli’s military fame was a resource for him as a diplomat. Military fame was a resource because it was symbolic capital that mediated Montecuccoli’s reputation in the language of symbolic communication. How military fame worked in the language of symbolic communication is discussed by looking at Raimondo Montecuccoli’s Swedish journal. Montecuccoli’s own account is contrasted by the Swedish journal of the English ambassador Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605–1675), who was at the Swedish court at the same time. This article is about the weight of military fame in the inaugural audience of Imperial general and diplomat Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609–1680) at the Swedish court in 1654. Early Eighteenth Century’ Jewish Religiousness: A Case of Leibele Prossnitz as Depicted in Bashraybung fun Shabbetai Ẓevi
The study analyses parts of Bashraybung fun Shabbetai Ẓevi dedicated to Leibele Prossnitz, the best-known Moravian adherent of the Sabbatian movement. This early modern Jewish messianic movement is reflected as heretical in academic and non-academic discourse alike and Bashraybung is the only contemporary source describing Leibele Prossnitz’ religious behaviour in more detail. Such described behaviour is put in general context of the early modern European Jewish society to derive those deeds and thoughts of Leibele Prossnitz which are in the text perceived as “normal” (orthodox) and those which are perceived as “extraordinary” (heterodox, heretical). Further, the study distinguishes the deeds and thoughts of Leibele Prossnitz which are specifically Sabbatian, that means those which are shared neither by other messianic enthusiasts of the time nor by other contemporary Jews, and those which are of his own invention. The study is intended to be a contribution to the present discussion on early modern Jewish orthodoxy and heterodoxy. The study analyses parts of Bashraybung fun Shabbetai Ẓevi dedicated to Leibele Prossnitz, the best-known Moravian adherent of the Sabbatian movement.
