A Campus Novel, a Picaresque Novel and a Double Bildungsroman: Reconsidering Michael Chabonʼs Wonder Boys

    No full text
Michael Chabon’s second novel Wonder Boys (1995) focuses on Grady Tripp, a professor of creative writing whose personal and professional problems culminate during a writers’ festival on campus. A first person account of a series of unexpected events that Grady and his student James Leer experience in and outside of Pittsburgh during one weekend, the novel received mixed reviews. Whereas Robert Ward praised the text for being “the ultimate writing-program novel,” Michael Gorra denounced it, in a rather simplified way, as “another novel about a writer messing up his life.” Most famously, Jonathan Yardley in The Washington Post review appreciated the novel’s style and effective use of comic elements, but concluded that the text portrays a limited experience similar to the author’s own, thus urging Chabon “to move on, to break away from the first person and explore larger worlds.” While Chabon later seemed to follow Yardley’s advice in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (2000), an ambitious historical novel which earned him the Pulitzer Prize, this paper aims to reconsider Wonder Boys by drawing on its previous criticism and analyzing it as an amalgam of the campus novel, the picaresque as well as both Grady’s and James’s Bildungsroman

Funding of the Papal Army’s Campaign to Germany during the Schmalkaldic War

    No full text
This article is based on the recently discovered text of accounting documentation led by the Papal secret accountant Pietro Giovanni Aleotti. He kept records of income and expenses of Papal chamber connected with the campaign of Papal army that was sent from Italy to Germany by Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) in the frame of the first period of so called Smalkaldic War (1546–1547). The author publishes this unique source in extenso and completes the edition by the detailed analysis of the incomes and expenses of this documentation. The analysis is extended by three partial texts dealing with 1) so called Jewish tax that was announced by Paul III in the financial support of military campaign, 2) credit granting of this campaign by the bank house of Benvenuto Olivieri in connection with the collection of Papal tithe in the Romagna region and 3) staffing of the commanding officers of Papal army during this campaign (in the attachment one can find a reconstruction of the officers’ staff with identification of the most important commanders). In the conclusion the author tries to determine the real motives why Paul III decided to take part in this campaign. In comparison to the previous works the author accents mainly the efforts of the Farnese family to raise their prestige at the end of the pontificate of Paul III and their immediate financial interests that are reflected in the account documentation. This article is based on the recently discovered text of accounting documentation led by the Papal secret accountant Pietro Giovanni Aleotti. The city, war and Jesuits: Jesuit’s mission in Košice during the anti-Habsburg uprising

    No full text
The study sets as its objective to characterize three lines of force majeure – Habsburgs, Church and rebels, which met in Košice during the anti-Habsburg uprisings, and to present a cultural, religious and power struggle of Košice during that time (1604–1711). The contacts between Jesuits and the city of Košice started in 1563 with the visit of Jesuits from Trnava and in 1582 of Antonio Possevino and continued by the mission of Peter Pázmány (1601) and two murdered Jesuits (1619) to the foundation of the College and University in the middle of 17th century. The last two uprisings (in 1680s respectively 1700s) represented only the pause in the process of Recatholisation of the city. The study sets as its objective to characterize three lines of force majeure – Habsburgs, Church and rebels, which met in Košice during the anti-Habsburg uprisings, and to present a cultural, religious and power struggle of Košice during that time (1604–1711). Kunigunda (1827–1892) and Karolina (1874–1935) von Dalberg owned the books and they wrote about their thoughts into them. These books have been stored in the chateau of Dačice and they were forgotten for a long period of time. It was really difficult to classify them due to their complicated structure. I was able to categorize them amongst the ego-documents and I found out they corresponded to the sources called silva rerum. It is very difficult to define this type of a source, because it consists of a miscellaneous content (poems, alba amicorum and diaries entries, pictures, photos etc). What is also special about them is the fact they are quite rare in our area, and that is why just a little of research has been done so far. It is a source of a personal nature and it offers a lot of information. In future, it can also provide answers to various questions related to a personal and public life, everydayness, the way of thinking, the contacts network and many others from the aristocratic life of the 19th century.Kunigunda (1827–1892) and Karolina (1874–1935) von Dalberg owned the books and they wrote about their thoughts into them. The Extraordinary Imperial Ambassadors to the Conclave during the 1667–1730 Period

    No full text
This study focuses on the practice of the appointing of extaordinary imperial ambassadors and representatives for papal elections during the years 1667–1730. To describe the development and the changes in the approach to this issue during the period monitored the author selected three model cases – the last mission of Cardinal Ernst Adalbert von Harrach at a conclave in 1667, the appointing of the extraordinary secular ambassador to the conclave, Anton Florian von Lichtenstein, in 1689 and the mission of Antonio Rambaldo di Collalto who, in 1730, collaborated with the ordinary Imperial Resident, Cardinal Cienfuegos. The study is based on the family archives of Harrach (held in the Österreichisches Staatsarchiv in Vienna), and of Collalto and Kaunitz (both are held in the Moravský zemský archiv in Brno) and on the diplomatic correspondence and the recorded agenda of the Imperial Embassy in Rome that is preserved in the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna. The period in question can be divided into three different sections. For the papal elections in 1667, 1669 and 1676 Emperor Leopold I appointed those cardinals who favoured the House of Habsburg. After the death of Pope Innocent XI in 1689 the situation changed to the detriment of the Habsburg dynasty and Leopold I decided to appoint an extraordinary secular ambassador. Anton Florian von Liechtenstein, in cooperation with Cardinal Johann von Goess, was supposed to correct the steps of the not so reliable Cardinal Protector Germaniae et Hispaniae Francesco Maria de’Medici. Liechtenstein’s task was to build-up prestige and to establish a permanent embassy at the Holy See. During the years 1691–1730 the practice of appointing extraordinary secular ambassadors to the conclave had already stabilised – mostly they were imperial counts who intervened with total respect in the events that took place around the papal election. This study focuses on the practice of the appointing of extaordinary imperial ambassadors and representatives for papal elections during the years 1667–1730. ECONOMIC EFFECTIVENESS AND RELIABILITY EVALUATION OF ERGATIC BASE COMPLEX

    No full text
Recently, an economic stability and effectiveness of airlines and their branches are important, besides the technical reliability. Within the interest of each provider is to have not only a reliable and economically effective ergatic base complex, as a technical complex, but also the quality of particular elements of the system, and the company itself. Various methods are used to determine the quality of work with complex systems. The proposed method uses the effectiveness index of reliability tests which are a part of the implementation of new complex systems into the ergatic base complex, where the tests´ outputs create a quantified characteristics according to which it is possible to estimate the level of conformity between the costs and real operation. When solving this problem through MATLAB it was necessary to take into account the optimization of financial expenses to maintain the reliability of the above mentioned complexes as well as the unexpected expenses of the provider (for example a provider of airport base system)

The paper deals with the implementation of the selected Theory of Constraints technique in order to identify the main causes of undesirable consequences in the field of inventory logistics. The need to identify the undesirable consequences of inventory logistics is primarily related to the negative impact on the costs system, profitability and quality of the entire supply chain. Implementation issues especially deal with the individual steps of the process related to the creation of the Theory of Constraints particular tree (technique). The intention of the technique is to identify the main causes that have the most significant impact on side effects of supplying on supply chain

The article deals with evaluation of transport experiments to compare selected vehicles in the context of inertial forces effect on cargo during transport. Emphasis is placed on the adequacy of the cargo securing in terms of the size of inertia forces (acceleration coefficients) that can represent a safety risk not only for the cargo, vehicle or crew of the vehicle, but also for other drivers (road users). In a separate part of the article, aspects of the transport of explosives are analyzed taking into account the sizes of inertia forces during transport. Paper also includes analysis of differences in transport of industrial explosives and military transport of explosives

Passive Dolls and Gothic Escapes: Angela Carter’s and Margaret Atwood’s Early Novels

    No full text
The article deals with Shadow Dance (1966) and Love (1971) by Angela Carter; and The Edible Woman (1969) and Lady Oracle (1976) by Margaret Atwood. It focuses on Carter’s and Atwood’s treatment of popular genres, especially the genres of romance and Gothic. Although their early writing depicts passive characters who are often presented as doll-like and paralyzed, they develop from victims to survivors. In this respect, Carter and Atwood exploit romance and Gothic to re-write and parody the pre-determined roles and stereotypical conclusions which these traditional genres contain
