“But as Soon as He Is Married, He Deteriorates Immediately”. Fulfilling of the sex roles in the poetic composition “Complaint about the Marriage” by Hynek of Poděbrady
The present study analyzes the poem “Complaint about the Marriage” by Hynek of Poděbrady from the last third of the 15th century. The youngest son of Bohemian King George of Poděbrady introduced the composition, which strengthened the distinction to the less noble men by the means of culturally constructed differences, to the aristocratic audience. Using the attributes of carnival entertainment, the author drew on the experience of his peers − starting a family and assuming the role of a farmer, including the difficulties associated with this transitional phase. The present study analyzes the poem “Complaint about the Marriage” by Hynek of Poděbrady from the last third of the 15th century. Language Students and Interpreters at the Mid-seventeenth-century Habsburg Embassy in Constantinople
This paper addresses the topic of the early modern Habsburg-Ottoman relationship through the special aspect of interpreting and translating in a multicultural environment at the Sublime Porte. More precisely, it focuses on interpreters – in Ottoman context the so called “dragomans” – of the mid- eventeenthcentury Habsburg embassy in Constantinople: Josephus Barbatus, Giovanni Battista Corel and Nicusio Panaiotti. The analysis of their activity as imperial interpreters gives a solid overview of the professional abilities, competences and personal characteristics which were advantageous or disadvantageous for this position; furthermore, it also sheds light upon the various requirements and selection criteria of the imperial government towards interpreters. The paper also reflects investigations concerning the efforts of the Habsburg Court in Vienna in order to create a corps of loyal and competent professional interpreters trained in Constantinople especially for acquiring the necessary skills of Oriental languages in the mentioned period. This paper addresses the topic of the early modern Habsburg-Ottoman relationship through the special aspect of interpreting and translating in a multicultural environment at the Sublime Porte. Dominik Andreas von Kaunitz during the 80’s and the early 90’s of the 17th Century. The Early Career of the Imperial Diplomat
The present study focuses on documenting the beginnings of the diplomatic career of one of the most important imperial diplomats, Dominik Andreas Count von Kaunitz (1655–1705) and on defining the information that was learned within the context of the current research. Researchers have already studied the peak period of Kaunitz’ diplomatic career in the late 1690’s, when he served in the Hague as the imperial envoy and was subsequently appointed as the Reichsvizekanzler. His previous activities, however, have so far not aroused much interest, though it was the 80’s and the beginning of the 90’s of the 17th century that were crucial in regard to his future direction. Based on the research that was carried-out in the Moravský zemský archiv in Brno (Moravian Land Archive, in the Kaunitz and Dietrichstein Family Archives) and in the archives in Vienna (in Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv and Allgemeines Verwaltungsarchiv) and also in the Munich archive (Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv) attention will be paid not only to what, when and where Count von Kaunitz discussed during his journeys, but also the manner in which he acted and the strategies that he chose to employ. This study should therefore reveal not only this diplomat’s mental world but also his everyday life and his social background. The present study focuses on documenting the beginnings of the diplomatic career of one of the most important imperial diplomats, Dominik Andreas Count von Kaunitz (1655–1705) and on defining the information that was learned within the context of the current research. PERFORMANCES ORDERING IN LONG – DISTANCE PASSENGER RAIL TRANSPORT IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC
Reformy v železničnej doprave a postupné otváranie železničného sektora začali v EÚ už v 90. rokoch 20. storočia aplikáciou príslušných smerníc a regulačných opatrení. The reforms in the railway transport and the gradual opening up of the rail sector started EU already in the 90s of the 20th century application of the relevant directives and regulatory measures. The paper is focused on the analysis of the successive steps of the Slovak Government in the promulgation of the first tender for the provision of transport services which are subsidized, and also set the conditions for this competition on a defined line
Eye-gouging in Antebellum Popular Fiction
Early nineteenth century visitors of the Appalachian frontier were shocked by the violence they encountered. In the antebellum backcountry, a “rough and tumble” fight was the accustomed method for settling even minor disagreements. What made this fighting style unique was the emphasis on maximum disfigurement of the opponent and amid pulling hair, biting off lips, tearing off noses and choking, gouging out an opponent’s eye became the essence of rough and tumble. The popularity of this fighting style was attested by the presence of numerous one-eyed men along the Appalachian frontier and the winners of such fights were celebrated in the region’s oral folklore. The article traces the reflection of this violent phenomenon in various works of antebellum popular fiction, including a series of humorous pamphlets known as Crockett Almanacs which were published between 1835 and 1856
