ALPHA-THETA BRAINWAVE TRAINING: INSTRUMENTAL VIPASSANA?
The following paper was presented by Elmer Green on June 22, 1993 at a symposium in Montreal Canada. In it, Dr. Green addresses similarities observed between alpha-theta brainwave ftedback and vipassana meditation and points to the usefolness ofthese practices in stimulating intuitive answers from the unconscious that are often valuable in relation to solving problems. rEds.
EEG AMPLITUDE, BRAIN MAPPING, & SYNCHRONY IN & BETWEEN A BIOENERGY PRACTITIONER & CLIENT DURING HEALING
A controlled case study was conducted with a bioenergy practitioner and a client during a healing experience. Experimental effects were documented with both participants measured simultaneously using a 24-channel digitized EEG evaluations under four experimental and control conditions: relaxation, meditation, healing-at-a-distance, and healing (client present). Clinical observations and/or ratings of each condition were made by both participants Brain maps of the bioenergy practitioner across conditions indicated the presence of a strong right hemispheric activation pattern compared to the left. High amplitude alpha rhythms (up ro 100 uV) were observed in the left and right occiputs, and high amplitude beta and gamma rhythms were also present in die right occiput and in other areas of die right hemisphere during all conditions, but especially during relaxation and meditation. Healing at-a-distance and healing (client present) were associated with high frequency, high amplitude beta and gamma rhythm localized in the right frontal area, together with low amplitude left occipital and central them rhythm. Intra-and inter-personal synchrony between bipolar electrode pairs was determined for each condition. Beta, alpha, theta, and gamma synchrony in the bioenergy practitioner was higher and less variable than that in the client in all conditions, and was highest and most stable during healing-at-a-distance. Interpersonal synchrony was highest during healing, especially in alpha frequencies between left occipital areas of bioenergy practitioner and client
DISTANT HEALING
This article reviews 61 studies of distant healing, which is healing that is deliberately sent by one or more healers as an intent, wish, meditation, or prayer to a he alee who may be in the healers' presence or may be far away. Distance, even thousands of miles, does not appear to limit the effects of healing. Significant effects of distant healing are demonstrated through randomized controlled trials in humans, animals, plants, bacteria, yeasts, cells in the laboratory, and DNA. Fascinating new insights about energy medicine and integrative care are suggested by these studies. Noteworthy are 120 further randomized controlled studies of healing given with the healers' hands held on or near the body, again with many of these demonstrating highly significant effects, not included in this article. 1,2 While distant healing appears to contradict our ordinary sense of reality and the laws defined by Newtonian science, there are several theoretical paradigms that suggest explanations for healing
EFFECTS OF TWO FLOWER ESSENCES ON HIGH INTENSITY ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION AND EMF
Certain flower essences are thought to have an antidoting effect on the impact of high levels of environmental stimulation. Using a randomized double blind experimental design, this study explored the effects of two flower essence formulas (Yarrow Special Formula and Five Flower Formula) on the intense environmental stimulation of fluorescent lights and its concomitant electromagnetic fields (EMF). Twenty four subjects (N = 8 per cell) were monirored using a 19 channel quantitative electroencephalograph (qEEG) system, along with the activity of six surface electromyograph (SEMG) sites (Frontal, C2 (mastoid ro mastoid), Cervical (C4 paraspinals), Thoracic (T6 paraspinals), Lumbar (T12 paraspinals) and Sacral (Ll Paraspinals)). A 12 minute study was conducted which assessed baseline activity; reaction to the flower essence or placebo; reaction to the high intensity light stimulation; and concluded with a recovery period. The artifacted qEEG and SEMG data were submitted to standard statistical analysis (ANOVA). The results of the study show EEG activation of the frontal lobes area to the photic stimulation, but only for those individuals who received the Placebo preparation. Concurrent activation of the T6 paraspinals was also noted for only the Placebo control group as well. This demonstrates that the stress response was seen only in the Placebo group. Here the executive and premoror functions of the frontal lobes activate to determine the course of action to the perceived threat, while the subjects concurrently extended their chest in preparation for fight or flight. The two flower essence groups did not show a similar stress response. Thus flower essences are demonstrated to antidote environmental stressors
I WANT TO BE A NOBODY AND HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER YOU
Please understand that I am not opposed to our having bodies even with all the trouble they present us with. I however, to show you the advantages of being a nobody. I also plan to clarifY why it is advantageous to have and give nothing when the opportunity presents itself. All of creation has come from nothing but it is a very special nothing. It is not a vacuum but contains the potential to become something and create something. White animals are very significant symbols in dreams and myths. Why? Because they represent the blank canvas which can be the foundation for the creation of some remarkable works of art. So out of this socalled nothing comes The One who has created everything. Within that nothing, consciousness, intelligence and exist which create the matter and the bodies. We are given bodies for specific reasons. are not provided to malfunction and provide a livelihood for health professionals. are provided so that we may manifest the work of The One and be Co-developers and Please remember that there are times being a nobody is
EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF MEDITATION: DOES A SLEEP RHYTHM HYPOTHESIS EXPLAIN THE DATA?
This article reviews the findings of important empirical studies of meditators and shows that these findings can be explained by the hypothesis that meditation is generated by induction of slow wave sleep rhythms. This hypothesis explains why radionucleide imaging (PET, SPECT, and fMRI) studies report increases in neuronal activity in the thalamus (where sleep rhythms are generated) and in the hippocampus (which receives a barrage of vision-related signals caused by manipulations of attention and sleep rhythm activity). It also explains the diverse findings of EEG/QEEG studies, for example, the observed short-term increases in alpha band frequencies and coherence, the subsequent shifts to slower theta/delta frequencies, and the reports of a sudden frequency-splitting and amplitude-doubling concurrent with ecstatic raptures. The author suggests that existing studies of meditation do not account for the likelihood that the theta/delta frequency distribution associated with meditation can be generated by two very different mechanisms: (1) by induction of a drowsy, hypnagogic state ("stage 1" NREMS), an experience familiar to many people and thus easily achievable by novice meditators, and alternatively, (2) by inducing the full progression of thalamic sleep rhythms, an option available only to advanced meditators who are able to move beyond "stage 1" NREMS ro induce thalamic spindle-burst typical of "stage 2" NREMS, then beyond that to induce delta waves typical of "stage 3" NREMS. These thalamic delta waves, after augmentation by intracortical circuits, register in the cortical EEG as low-theta/high-delta band activity, making it easy to mistake the underlying mechanism as stage 1 NREMS
MECHANISMS RELATED TO CHARGE DENSITY PULSE FORMATION IN LIVING SYSTEMS
In this paper we discuss empirical approaches designed to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the formation of Charge Density Pulses (CDP) originating in living organisms. These oscillating pulses originate intracellularly in an unstable, dissipative system and are manifested as interfacial reactions located at the tissue-metal electrode contact zone. In both plants and animals the characteristics of the input energy are consistent with intracellular homeostatic mechanisms which dissipate in accordance with a precise log-time function. Studies with living systems support a conjecture of CDP specificity within tissue types; showing that the most active oscillations occur in those tissues with higher metabolic rates. In human subjects, injury and its associated pain, produces significant alterations in the CDP waveform, the magnitude of which can be utilized to quantitatively determine pain levels. Specific examples of applying CDr methods in trauma and pain monitoring are given in Levengood and Gedye, U.S. patent No. 6,347,238 B 1, issued February 12, 2002. J From the application of reaction rate theory the Gibbs free energy of activation, for CDP formation in Dacus carota roots was found to be 9.4 kcallmole. In addition, strong support for enzymatic control of the CDP oscillatory process was provided by the observation that the dissipative rate constant (k-value) dropped very sharply as the tissue temperature reached 40"C, a critical temperature which in most plant species is well known to produce enzymatic deactivation and inhibition of respiration. From these enzymatic studies as well as from data obtained in the early phases of our work, it became quite clear that CDP pulses are composed of charge carrier mechanisms with properties far more complex than those observed under conditions of classical electronic conduction. The observed non-ohmic conductivity patterns are suggestive of the kinds of superconductivity mechanisms found in Josephson Junction systems where charge carriers are formed within metal-metal oxide layers
MANIPULATION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM VIA FIELDS PROJECTED FROM HUMAN HANDS: A Qi Energy Connection?
The concept of Qi energy has been an integral component of Eastern philosophy and medicine for thousands of years. While there is no precise Western definition of Qi energy, it is often referred to as bioelectricity. It has been well established in the West that the electrical activity in the human body produces magnetic fields, which are sometimes referred to as Bioelectromagnetic (BioEM) energy. Technological advances over the past several decades have made it possible to measure these subtle yet important electromagnetic energy fields within and around the human body. Increasing evidence suggests that the Eastern concept of Qi and the Western concept of BioEM energy may be one and the same. An exploratory experiment was designed and carried out with the intention of providing further evidence of this connection. Three adult males with reported extraordinary Qi energy manipulation abilities projected Qi energy towards copper coils that were designed to measure subtle alterations in the immediate electromagnetic environment. The results indicate that power increased or decreased significantly in the test phase at several frequencies when compared to the control phases. The analysis also indicated that the change in power for these specific frequencies was directional. That is, these changes in power were mostly detected in one versus all three coils simultaneously. These results suggest that it is possible for human beings to alter the electromagnetic environment around their hands at will. Specifically, the power seen at certain frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum can be lowered or raised when a Qi Master "emits" Qi energy versus simply holding his hand over a detection device during a control phase
REDUCTION OF FREE RADICALS BY ELECTRICAL STIMULATION OF SPECIFIC ACUPUNCTURE POINTS
Thirty individuals with posltlve urinary tests for malondialdehyde, a major marker for free radicals, used one of two types of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators for two to four days on thirteen acupressure points, the Ring of Crystal. There was a significant reduction of free radicals after two to four days of stimulation. The potential anti-aging and health enhancement benefits of this approach are worthy of further study
