PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY, PSYCHOSYNTHESIS AND THE SEARCH FOR SELF
In this paper Evidence is presented of the many ways we are all connected. Our physical bodies are an intrinsic part of the substance of the planet; the same oxygen that flows through us now also flows through the fishes, birds and beasts, the oceans, and the plants; the same oxygen once flowed through Jesus and all life 2000 years ago, and through the dinosaurs eons earlier. Physically we are totally connected with aU living creatures, an integral part of the web of life on our earth. The reality of our psychological connectedness and oneness is now emerging in scientific explorations such as demonstrations of the effects of prayer on healing; researchers mentally influencing the physiology of others; a myriad of ESP experiments; and studies of healing at a distance. At some deep level, we are all connected in the collective unconscious, the planetary field of mind. Applications and implications of these facts, and tools such as neurofeedback and psychosynthesis for their exploration, experiencing, and manifestation in therapeutic settings and practical daily-life are discussed. Defining spiritual factors in energy medicine challenges us to examine the relationship between healing energy and over-arching spiritual experiences common to various healing traditions. Love, connections, unity and oneness are emphasized in every spiritual tradition. At this time in world affairs, there is an urgency that we as a human collective begin to recognize our oneness. In this exploratory process we can become aware of the common bonds of love that cement our connection to the universe, that define the Self for whom we search
SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS OF AN ARTIFACT FROM A PRESUMED EPISODE OF SPONTANEOUS HUMAN COMBUSTION: A Possible CllSe for Biological Nuclear Reactions
Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) is defined as a phenomenon that causes a human body to burn without a known, identifiable ignition source external to the body. While science recognizes scores of materials that can spontaneously combust, the human body is not among them. Although numerous theories have been posited to explain SHC, very little, if any, detailed scientific analysis of an actual SHC artifact has occurred. This study was designed to scientifically evaluate a known SHC artifact (Mott book jacket) and compare the findings to those of an identical book jacket (control sample). The results indicated significant visual, microscopic, atomic and molecular differences between the blackened front cover of the Mott book jacket and the unaffected back cover. The authors posit a theory for the idiopathic thermogenic event involving a biologically-induced nuclear explosion. This theory is capable of explaining most, if not all, of the scientific findings
EFFECTS OF REIKI ON PAIN AND SELECTED AFFECTIVE AND PERSONALITY VARIABLES OF CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS
This experiment examined the effects of Reiki (a laying-of-on-hands healing modality) on pain, mood, personality, and faith in God. Participants (N 120) were randomly assigned to one of the four groups (ns = 30). The Reiki Group received ten sessions of Reiki. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Group received ten sessions of relaxation therapy. Control Group received no treatment. Placebo Group received ten sessions of false-Reiki. Statistical analysis led to the following conclusions: (1) Reiki is an effective modality for reducing pain, depression, and anxiety. (2) Reiki is effective in enhancing desirable changes in personality and strengthening the faith in God. (3) Gains made by Reiki tend to persist over longer periods of dme. (4) Attunement seems to be a viral part in Reiki training. (5) Chronically ill patients experiencing stress and pain tend to be receptive to Reiki
HUMAN POTENTIAL AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION
Space permits only inclusion of the abstract of a paper by Steven L Fahrion, Human Potential and Personal Transformation, which appeared in Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine 6,1 (1995), pp. 55-88. This paper is directly an off-shoot from Dr. Green sinterest in human potential and in transformation. The idea that spectral analysis of the EEG across a sequence of alpha/theta neurofeedback trials can objectively reveal transformative changes in individuals so-trained offers exciting possibilities for expanding our knowledge ofthe physiology oftransformation. The interested reader is encouraged to pursue this intriguing topic through the reference above. rEds.
UNIIATERAL FORCED NOSTRIL BREATHING: Basic Science, Clinical Trials, and Selected Advanced Techniques
This arricle reviews the published basic science and clinical studies on unilateral forced nostril breatbing (UFNB), a subset of yogic breathing (ptanayam) techniques that were discovered/devised more than 5000 years ago. The relationship of UFNB to the ultradian physiological phenomenon called the nasal cycle, a marker of mind-body states is also reviewed. Basic science studies show how UFNB can affect the autonomic nervous system, central nervous system (including cognition), and general metabolic activities. Clinical trials on the application to angina pectoris and obsessive compulsive disorder are described, In addition, three selected advanced UFNB techniques are described; one for stimulating the immune system; one for developing a comprehensive, comparative, and intuitive mind; and a third for developing an enlightened-transcendent mind. These three techniques are part of the ancient science of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan
HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK: An Experiential Approach to Psychotherapy
The study investigated the relationship between the use of Holotropic Breathwork and therapeutic changes in levels of distress associated with self identified problems, death anxiety, self esteem, and sense of affiliation with others. Two groups of 24 subjects were compared using a measures design. One group participated in a combination of experientially oriented psychotherapy plus six monthly sessions of Holotropic Breathwork (Breathwork Group), the second group participated only in experientially oriented psychotherapy (Therapy Group). Dependent measures were Templer's Death Scale, the Abasement and Affiliation subscales of the Personality Research Form-E, and a questionnaire regarding self-identified problems. The Breathwork Group showed significant reductions in death and increases in self-esteem compared to the Therapy Group. No significant differences were observed between groups on affiliation or self-identified problems. Results suggest that experiential approaches to psychotherapy may be useful in ameliorating some types of psychological ptoblems
A COMPUTERIZED INSTRUMENT FOR FORENSIC CREDIBILITY ASSESSMENT: Initial Standardization and Test-Retest Findings
A fully automated computerized instrument for forensic credibility assessment was field tested with one hundred and three experimental trials utilizing an experimental population of ninetyfour. One of the group participants thereafter participated in further test-retest experiments. A core digital brainwave signature enabling the affirmation of truth and falsehood was found to be held in common across the entire experimental population. While the aforementioned core brainwave signature was found to be extant and common across the test population, the testretest data found that an individual's core brainwave signature included additional idiosyncratic relational brainwave indices which served as robust indicators in the thirty-six test-retest experimental trials. The implications of these findings relative to credibility forensic assessments free of technician/examiner bias are discussed
