    How Science Progresses

It is probably true quite generally that in the history of human thinking the most fruitful developments take place at those points where two different lines ofthought meet. These lines may have their roots in quite different parts ofhuman culture, in different times or different cultural environments or different religious traditions: hence, if they actually meet, that is, if they are at least so much related to each other that a real interaction can take place, then one may hope that new and interesting developments may follow. -Werner Heisenber

THE DREAM ABOUT EXTENDED ABSTRACTS OF DISSERTATIONS: Being an Essay on the Origin of the Present Volume

Once in a while a dream comes true-a dream that starts out as a vivid, exciting challenge and refuses to die. The first dream source began in the late 1940's when I first discovered Dissertation Abstracts (wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/), published by the University of Michigan What a wealth of information! These abstracts immediately became (and have since remained) one of my favorite sources for research on any topic (with now more than 1.6 million titles). They assumed an importance that previously had been reserved for the various indices to periodical literature which scholars had developed. Although subsequent publications in refereed journals would contain much more detail than would be permitted in the abstracts, they would tell me whether or not it was worthwhile to obtain the entire dissertation. Rarely was I disappointed when I took the time to get the entire dissertation. Their bibliographies and reviews of literature were occasionally amateurish, but always informative. Through the 1950s and 1960s dissertations were considered by me to be the most underused research resources available anywhere, and they probably still are. The Inter-library loan system facilitated their use. Frequently the abstracts led to personal correspondence with the authors. Networking using regular mail and telephones was greatly stimulated

    ESSENCE, GRACE AND HEALING

    Get PDF
In my many years of consciousness studies and work with people using a transpersonal approach, I have experienced a source of healing and personal unfolding that naturally arises from one's deepest Self. This essential flow often reveals itself mysteriously, poignantly transcending understanding. How does this essential grace work in one's personal development and the process of healing? I shall share a personal perspective as someone delving into the mystery

INTEGRAL HEALTH: HEALTH, CONSCIOUSNESS eftHUMAN FLOURISHING

    Get PDF
Ours is a precious human life. It is so because we are gifted with capacities and possibilities unknown to any other species. Through our own efforts we can gain freedom from suffering and achieve a sustained wholeness, peace, love and joy that surpasses the understanding of an ordinary consciousness. With this achievement all effortS at healing come to an end as we have reached the quintessence of human life-a health and life divine of body, mind and spirit. Bur for this level of healing we must look beyond our remedies and therapies ro the second grear force of healing, the inner force, that can only be activated and mastered through a progressive expansion of consciousness. This is what the ancient healing traditions have always whispered to us if we would but listen. Their healing elixir is simple: larger consciousness, larger health, larger life. As individuals and practitioners, our personal healing, as well as our capacity ro assist others in thei[ own healing, is especially dependent upon our abiliry to access higher levels of consciousness and their naturally emergent qualities of wisdom, wholeness, peace, love and compassion. A vertical leap in consciousness, we discover, is both the ground of our being and the ground of our healing. To arrain such an uncommon health and life requires that we invest in the development of our inner life, our consciousness. Utilizing rhe many traditional contem· plative, meditative and other paths that have been left to us by the great sages we can each tap into this singular essence of all healing practices. It is an essence that transcends yet simultaneously infuses all of our manifold metbods with an expansive consciousness that is the great elixir and essence of all healing and simultaneously the source of a remarkable human f1ourishing-a completion and perfection of our humanity that is unknown ro ordinary awareness

    THE MYSTERY OF CONSCIOUSNESS

With his characteristic blend of physics, psychology, philosophy and mysticism, Peter Russell articulates a new worldview that bridges both science and spirit. The key is the nature of consciousness. Modern science, which has enjoyed so much success in furthering our understanding of the material world, has singularly failed to account for consciousness. Yet without consciousness there would be no science. As far as the contemporary scientific worldview is concerned, consciousness is one big anomaly. Peter Russell challenges science's assumption about the nature of reality. Rather than trying to account for consciousness in terms of the material world, he ptoposes a new metaparadigm (the paradigm behind our various scientific paradigms) in which consciousness is as fundamental as space, time, and matter-perhaps even more so. This new view of consciousness leads a new understanding of God-not the Almighty, father-figure God of classical religion, but the God of which the mystics have always spoken, the Godhead shining within us all as the light of consciousness. We are on the threshold of a revolution in worldview even more profound and far-reaching than that initiated by Copernicus 500 years ago. All the pieces for the new worldview are in place. Nothing new needs to be discovered. All that is required is for us to put the pieces together and explore the new picture of the cosmos that emerges. When we do we discover a world in which the worldviews of science and spirituality no longer conflict, but represent two different views of reality. Such a convergence is most needed today, for it is the spiritual aridity of the current times that lies behind the many challenges now facing humanity

HAROLD BURR'S BIOFIELDS MEASURING THE ELECTROMAGNETICS OF LIFE

    Get PDF
In 1937, Harold Saxton Burr, Ph.D., a Professor of Anatomy at the Yale University School of Medicine, began a series of experiments that sought to measure and characterize the "bio-magnetic field" associated with living organisms. Burr steadfastly believed that life nor only exhibited electromagnetic properties, but that these same properties were, in his words, "the organizing principle" that kept living tissue from falling into a chaotic state. He provided incontrovertible evidence for this belief both with sophisticated electrical measurements, and also by being the first person to demonstrate the extraordinarily significant hypothesis that the appearance of physical illness (cancer, in this case) occurs after a measurable change in the organism's electric field. This paper reviews Burr's electromagnetic measurements from the perspective of its author's background in electrical engineering. It provides an overview of the many technical challenges Burr had to overcome in making precise electrical measurements ofbiological systems using technology that is considered primitive by today's standards. The instruments that Burr devised are remarkable for their time, rivaling in their pioneering genius Burr's revolutionary contributions to the scientific understanding ofthe organizing principles animating all life
