Seventy subjects diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome were randomized to a control group (N=33) or a treatment group (N :; 37). All continued usual medical care. Treatment subjects were assigned to a 9 week, 2-hours-per-week group program teaching mindfulness meditation and medical qigong practices. The outcome variable was 12-month health transition at oneyear follow-up, as defined by the SF36 12-month Health Transition score. The data yielded a classification tree with a 90% overall accuracy rate in classifYing subjects as "improvers" or non-improvers" (effect strength 80.5, experimentwise p < .05), based on SF36 Role FunctioningPhysical score at follow-up and frequency of mind/body self-healing practice. Subjects in the highest quartile of Role Functioning-Physical improved regardless of practice. For the remaining 75%, those practicing three or more days per week at follow-up were 2.7 times more likely to report positive 12-month Health Transition than those practicing less

GENERAL AND SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS OF THERMAL BIOFEEDBACK

When the work above was conducted, Green and his group were thinking ofprocesses underlying development of voluntary control, not how to deal with health problems. Their program was initially named the Voluntary Controls Program reflecting their interest in the volitional aspects of human potential His concept of empowerment became more clinically relevant when the following events (described in the next few papers) unfolded, opening a doorway to empowerment in health care. Decades later, we have only begun to cross the open threshold of this doorway. We remain restrained-from realizing the foil potential of what has been opened for us-by societal forces that turn us toward interventions such as medications and surgery, rather than toward taking charge ofour own health. We will return to this theme later, but first let us see just how the focus became more clinical. Elmer and Alyce summarize some of the events that led to this conceptual change in the following sections from their book chapter in Biofeedback: Principles and Practice for Clinicians Oohn V. SELF-RELIANCE: NOW

Even though the following article appeared recently in Bridges (Volume 10 #2, 1999, the Magazine of the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine), we have chosen to include it here for two reasons. First, the self-reliance aspect ofhuman potential is the goal ofall ofthe Greens' work. Second, we envision this volume as being a keepsake and reprise ofseminal ideas that gave birth to much ofwhat is happening today in the field ofsubtle energies and complementary medicine

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN A MAGNETIC FIELD

A Tibetan meditation system of 1882 suggested a way in which self awareness in student monks could be facilitated by using a bar magnet suspended NORTH UP over rhe crown of the head. This suggestion led £0 rhe design, in rhe presem srudy, of a double-blind rest of magne£Osratic perception in meditators using a bar magnet oriented either NORTH UP, SOUTH UP, or ABSENT. Effects were evaluated with a questionnaire having five experiential categories, physical, emotional, memal, extrapersonal (parapsychologic), and transpersonal. Two weak magnetostatic fields with strengths of 14 gauss (1.4 milliTeslas) and 140 gauss (14 milliTeslas), measured at the crown of the head, were used. Analysis of experiential data collected in three experiments revealed significant and consistent differential patterns of gender-related responses. Experiential subcategories which showed gender by magnetic field imeracrions included: Experiment 1: (1) Physical Energized, 92) Physical Sensory Perturbations; Experiment 2: (1) Physical Energized, (2) Emotional Energized; Experiment 3: Using a different protocol and analysis procedure, similar results were found. Major contributors to the interaction were: (1) Physical Energized, (2) Physical Body Perturbation, and (3) Physical Passive. The consistency of gender-related differential response patterns in these three investigations raises a question of gender based differential responses to "electromagnetic environmental pollution.

PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY, PSYCHOSYNTHESIS AND THE SEARCH FOR SELF

In this paper evidence is presented of the many ways we are all connected. Our physical bodies are an intrinsic part of the substance of the planet; the same oxygen that flows through us now also flows through the fishes, birds and beasts, the oceans, and the plants; the same oxygen once flowed through Jesus and all life 2000 years ago, and through the dinosaurs eons earlier. Physically we are totally connected with all living creatures, an integral part of the web of life on our earth. The reality of our psychological connectedness and oneness is now emerging in scientific explorations such as demonstrations of the effects of prayer on healing; researchers mentally influencing the physiology of others; a myriad of ESP experiments; and studies of healing at a distance. At some deep level, we are all connected in the collective unconscious, the planetary field of mind. Applications and implications of these facts, and tools such as neurofeedback and psychosynthesis for their exploration, experiencing, and manifestation in therapeutic settings and practical daily-life are discussed. Defining spiritual factors in energy medicine challenges us to examine the relationship between healing energy and over-arching spiritual experiences common to various healing traditions. Love, connections, unity and oneness are emphasized in every spiritual tradition. At this time in world affairs, there is an urgency that we as a human collective begin to recognize our oneness. In this exploratory process we can become aware of the common bonds of love that cement our connection to the universe, that define the Self for whom we search

    BEYOND PSYCHOPHYSICS

In this section Dr. Green extends his earlier psychophysiologic principle concerning «inside-theskin" mind-body interaction to interactions of the individual consciousness with the cosmos as a whole. The latter is stated succinctly as the Psychophysical Principle concerned with "outside-the-skin:" mind-universe interaction. Both principles are further subdivided into sensory and motor components, and the various components of the model are defined and explored. Every undesirable thoughtform that remains hidden in the unconscious continues to influence immediate events. We are both the sensors of life events, and the effectors who co-create the environment around us

ETIOLOGY RECAPITULATES ONTOLOGY: Reflections on Restoring the Spiritual Dimension to Models of the Determinants ofHealth

    Get PDF
This paper addresses theoretical issues related to the restoration of spirituality to models of the determinants of health and illness. It is asserted that models of etiology and disease causation necessarily reflect prevailing understandings of the nature of human life. Allopathic biomedicine, for example, is an inevitable product of materialistic and mechanistic views of what it means to be human; likewise, psychosomatic medicine emerged only among scientists and healers who accepted the mind as real. For a true body-mind-spirit perspective to prevail in medicine will require evidence of the reality and salutogenic salience of expressions or manifestations of a human spiritual dimension. As this paper describes, such evidence already exists in the form of empirical research findings from epidemiology, psychophysiology, and clinical medicine. Due to the rise of normal science within this emerging area of research, however, proponents of a body-mind-spirit paradigm are meeting with considerable resistance, ironically, from many of the putative leaders of the religion, spirituality, and health field. The shift to a new paradigm will only come once scientists and practitioners succeed in breaking free of the control of established medical and scientific institutions

ON ENHANCING NICOTINAMIDE ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE (NAD) ACTIVITY IN LIVING SYSTEMS

    Get PDF
Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) is a key molecule in intermediary metabolism and for the flow of energy in biological systems. It has been shown that a significant association exists in Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly, between larval development time, NAD and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)/Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) ratio. Furthermore, variation in NAD concentration has been associated with both AIDS and Alzheimer's disease in humans. Recent studies have favorably implicated NAD as a medication fot patients suffering from both dementia of the Alzheimer type and HIV-l infection. In this paper, we have examined the possibility that both EMFs and intention-augmented EMFs significantly affect (1) the activity of NAD in solution over time and (2) the condition of the water used for preparing NAD solutions to be subsequently utilized for in vitro energy assays in D. melanogaster. Here, we show that NAD activity and the (ATP)/(ADP) ratio significantly depended on the treatments given to the water. Out results indicated (1) that a reduction in exposure to EMFs increased NAD activity and (2) that electronic devices that had been exposed to a human intention concerned with energy metabolism, positively influenced both the activity of NAD and the ATP/ADP ratio in vitro

A COMPARISON OF HUMAN ENERGY FIELDS AMONG CHILDREN, YOUTH, ADULTS & DAHN MASTERS

    Get PDF
While concepts and investigations of human energy fields have been developed for centuries, there has been little systematic work comparing the fields of children, adolescents, and adults. In addition, general fields have had little comparison between average adults and those participating in an intense practice that may affect the field. Using the GDV machine, this research compared small groups of children, adolescents, average adults, and Dahn Hak Masters on measures of 20 basic aspects of the human energy fields, including the seven chakras. Differences were found in seven of the 13 field parameters as well as all seven measures of the chakras. The largest fields occurred with the Dahn Masters while children had the highest entropy (communication with the environment). Difference on chakras showed children to be the most open while adults were the most shut down. The means for Dahn Masters were more consistent with those for children and adolescents than other adults, suggesting that changes in the field with age may be different when people do extensive work that affects the field. Further research is required to verify these preliminary results and test additional questions raised by this study
