LUNAR CORRELATES OF NORMAL, ABNORMAL AND ANOMALOUS HUMAN BEHAVIOR
From ancient times, people have believed that the moon affects human behavior. To test this belief, roral lunar cycle (29,5 day synodic period) was correlated against 35 variables recorded during the calendar year 1993, The variables included global geophysical factors, local weather in Las Vegas, NV, indices of ahnormal and criminal activities in Clark Counry, NV, fluctuations in mutual fund prices and lonery payour percentages for six US state loneries, All data were averaged to smooth out daily fluctuations, data related to criminal and abnormal human behavior were adjusted for day-of-week periodicities, and the financial data was de-trended. Three types of relationships were explored: Correlation with rota I lunar cycle; mean differences between the waning and waxing lunar cycles; and sudden changes on the day of the full moon, Besides obtaining expected correlations with some geophysical variables, statistically significant relationships were also observed with some behavioral variables, mutual fund residuals and state louery payour percentages. Bivariate spectral analyses confirmed the presence of 29.5 day cycles in the crisis calls, abnormal, financial and lottery payout behavior. Variables showing sudden changes on the day of the full moon included crisis calls, suicide, and psychiatric admission rates. Variables showing significam differences between the waning and waxing moon included homicide and crisis calls. We conclude that this dataset supportS popular beliefs about imerrelationships of lunar phase and human behavior
REMOTE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY BY A RITUAL HEALING TECHNIQUE
Two experiments tested the hypothesis that remote calming effects of a traditional healing ritual can be objectively measured using indicators of electrodermal activity, heart rate and blood volume. A total of 14 sessions were conducted in the initial study and 16 sessions were conducted in the replication. In both experiments, the authors exchanged roles as experimenter, healer and patient. Healers were instructed to try to calm the remote patient using a set of traditional ritual magic strategies, or to exert no influence (as a control). The patient created a doll in his or her likeness and provided mementos, pictures and an autobiographical sketch. The healer used these materials to form a sympathetic connection with the patient who was located in another building in an isolated toom. During the experiments, there were no other connections between the healer and the patient. Each session consisted of a randomized counterbalanced sequence of five calming and five control epochs of one minute each. No performance feedback was provided to the healer or patient during the session. The combined results of both experiments showed significant effects for changes in blood volume (p = .00002), heart rate (p = .001) and electrodermal activity (p = .013), suggesting that traditional magic healing rituals caused significant relaxation of the vascular system and arousal of electrodermal activity. These rituals appear to be helpful in focusing mental intention in laboratory investigations of direct mental interactions with living systems
POSSIBLE INFLUENCE OF THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD ON SPORTS PERFORMANCE
If human behavior and performance are affected by minute changes in the earth's geomagnetic field, as suggested by a growing body of evidence, then one might also expect to see such influences reflected in skilled physical performance, such as sports. To explore this possibility, scores from a mixed-gender, candlepin competitive bowling league were correlated with daily planetary geomagnetic flux. Results indicated that geomagnetic fluctuations the day before bowling accounted for a significant percentage (40%) of the variance in men's bowling scores. The same relationship was not independently significant for women's scores, but the correlation was opposite to men's scores
SIMULTANEOUS PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS OF A HAWAIIAN HEALER AND CLIENT DURING HEALING
This controlled case study was performed to investigate whether within and between subject physiological changes might occur during a healing experience that would differentiate healing from baseline and control conditions. Simultaneous measurements of EEG absolute power and coherence, heart rate, skin conductance, and hand temperature were performed on two subjects during five periods: two baselines, healing, a meditation or relaxation control condition, and photic stimulation. Each subject demonstrated significant physiological changes during healing that allowed differentiation of healing from their control and baseline conditions. Both EEG and somatic physiological measures indicated that the healer became more aroused during healing and the client more relaxed. The healer had a drop in frontal to occipital interhemispheric coherence during healing as well as increased heart rate and skin conductance. The client had a drop in frontal beta power and a drop in skin conductance during healing. The client also exhibited a strong trend toward increased parietal interhemispheric alpha band coherence during healing. No meaningful increase in covariance of EEG or other physiological measures occurred between the subjects during healing. A statistical method for the analysis of many EEG variables across several experimental conditions for individuals and between two subjects was modeled
EVIDENCE FOR CHARGE DENSITY PULSES ASSOCIATED WITH BIOELECTRIC FIELDS IN LIVING ORGANISMS
Empirical evidence is presented for oscillating, non-ohmic conductivity mechanisms induced in metals by living systems functioning at normal physiological temperatures. When human hands or living plant materials are placed in contact with metallic, charge collector electrodes arranged in a capacitative type monitoring system, oscillatory electrical currents consisting of what are defined here as Charge Density Pulse (CDP) waves with amplitudes in the 0.1 to 10 microamp range, are continuously generated during 30 sec. to one minute test intervals and exhibit well defined polarity orientations. Through the application of perturbation kinetics evidence was obtained to suggest that CDP responses are associated with charge carrier transport across cell membranes. Envelopes of the dissipative CDP traces followed a log-time relationship with a negative slope. The persistence of CDP oscillations suggested metastable systems in which organized electrical pulses propagate as soliton waves. In the case of human hand experiments these solitons may facilitate local electroporation processes in the epidermis. Interposed, dielectric films completely blocked the CDP response, whereas magnetic fields significantly altered its wave form. Aluminum and copper inserts between hand and electrode produced systematic changes in patterns of conductivity with characteristics somewhat analogous to Josephson junction systems. All aspects of this study are compatible with recently published theoretical papers proposing ideas relative to superconducting type mechanisms in living systems
SCORES OF PSYCHIC CLAIMANTS ON THE MARl CARD TEST
The Mari Card Test was developed by Joan Kellogg, and was based on her experience with clients who drew mandalas during art therapy sessions. This test reputedly yields information helpful in clinical work, especially with an art therapy component. Three female and two male psychic claimants served as research participants for this study, the purpose of which was to determine the descriptive utility of the test for members of this population. The results appeared to indicate that these five psychic claimants relied on unconscious functioning to a greater extent than other groups, partially replicating results of an earlier study. In addition, the group's color preferences on the Mari Card Test and their scores on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator resembled the matches with personality functions described by some Jungians, suggesting that portions of these two instruments may tap into similar dimensions
MANIFESTO FOR A NEW WORLD MEDICINE
This keynote address present an overview of the New World Medicine, a way of approaching health and illness that is enlarging the premises, practices and structure of modern biomedicine, and attracting tens of millions of patients in the United States. The New Medicine, which is being developed jointly by physicians and other practitioners and patients in the United States, combines the precision of modern science with the wisdom of ancient healing. It explores and integrates the healing practices of many cultures including the herbalism, acupuncture, Tai Chi and Qigong of China, as well as such unconventional Western approaches as massage, homeopathy, chiropractic and prayer. It focuses on the interactions between mind and body and the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social and spiritual factors can direcdy affect health. It regards as fundamental an approach which respects and enhances each person's capacity for self-knowledge and self-care and emphasizes self-care techniques. It views illness as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation and health care providers as catalysts and guides in this process
