Physiological and Therapeutic Aspects of Shamanistic Healing
This paper addresses the psychophysiological and therapeutic bases of some universal aspects of shamanistic healing practices. Shamanistic healing is universal because of the interrelated physiological, experiential and therapeutic bases in the use of altered states of consciousness (ASC) Case studies of cross-cultural therapeutic use of ASC illustrate rultural effectiveness. The scientific bases for therapeutic effectiveness are addressed through an examination of the pychophysiology of ASC. Clinical and physiological evidence for the therapeutic effectiveness of ASC in general and hallucinogens in particular is reviewed. Possession and the temporal lobe syndrome are briefly examined in the conteXt of the psychophysiology of ASC
INTUITIVE DIAGNOSIS
A clinical 'hunch' is well known to doctors, nurses, and ocher health care professionals. It may be as vague as an uneasy feeling, that defies laboratory explanarion but leads to perseverance umil a diagnosis is uncovered. An urge may arise to visit a particular patient, who turns out to be in urgent need of help. A complex diagnosis may come to mind days before it is confIrmed. The frequency of such occurrences is unknown but intuitive impressions are explored only rarely by most medical professionals. Intuitive impressions are nor limited to medical professionals. Occasional intuitive insights are reported by scientists, artists, and politicians. Indeed. intuitive experiences have influenced numerous famous people throughout history. Many healers claim that intuitive impressions are a regular aspect of their work. If true, this could offer a major contribution to medical care. Considerable research has been published in support of the efficacy of healing. Fewer studies are available to assess the validiry of claims for intuitive diagnosis. These are reviewed in this article. Two qualitative studies of intuitive diagnosis are presented, with discussions of theoretical issues and problems with methodology
BUT IS IT ENERGY? REFLECTIONS ON CONSCIOUSNESS, HEALING, AND THE NEW PARADIGM
When consciousness is involved in healing, it manifests either locally or nonlocally. Although local manifestations of consciousness can be described by the known tenets of physiology and contemporary physics, nonlocal effects of consciousness cannot be so described. Any comprehensive model of mind-based healing must account for "limit cases" such as nonlocal, distant healing effects which are apparently immediate, un mediated, and unmitigated; and effects which display time-displacement. It is questionable whether energy-based models of consciousness and healing are capable of such explanations. It is proposed that nonlocal models of consciousness must transcend a reliance on an energy metaphor. Such emerging models contain profound practical and spiritual implications
ENVIRONMENTAL MODULATION AND STATISTICAL EQUILIBRIUM IN MIND-MATTER INTERACTION
Mind-matter interactions observed in laboratory experiments typically manifest as minute statistical flucruations from chance expectation. Meta-analyses suggest that these small flucruations reflect genuine, direct interactions between mind and matter, but lack of predictability of the effect has made systematic study of the phenomenon difficult. Two general factors that may contribute to erratic laboratory outcomes are (a) unavoidable environmental fluctuations and (b) a physical principle that tends to counterbalance mind-matter effecrs in time and space. Environment is used in the holistic sense, including cosmic, global, local, and personal variables. The physical principle is envisioned as a tendency for perturbations introduced into a system to be statistically balanced by opposing perturbations so as to maintain an overall condition of equilibrium. A longitudinal experiment with the experimenter as subject was designed to explore the possible influences of these twO factors in mind-matter interaction. The results found strong indicators of environmental modulation, including a successful demonstration that a neural network could learn to predict mind-matter interaction performance based upon eight environmental variables. Evidence for a time-and space-like equilibrium principle was also observed in the data
MIND OVER MATTER: VOLITION AND THE COSMIC CONNECTION IN YOGIC THEORY
Energy Medicine and Subtle Energies can be defined operationally in increasingly precise ways as new techniques, new tools, and new theories are developed and tested. Personal ecology is discussed in relation to the burgeoning consumption of non-organic drugs being produced and advertised by commercial drug companies under the umbrella of "the American health care system." In contrast, a yogic self-regulation theory is outlined which, if it is tested, could provide strong guidance for the development of a Science of Human Potential and lead to a better understanding of psychophysiologic self-regulation (mind-over-matter inside the skin, INS) and parapsychology, psychokinesis, and traditional "healing" (mind-over-matter outside the skin, OUTS). Basic Patanjali yoga and volition, and their relation to both INS and OUTS "coincidence control" are considered. On the other hand, it is argued that if we hope in ISSSEEM to build bridges, linking paradigms for clinicians and scientists, that, whenever possible, it is useful to use concepts and metaphors, instruments and techniques, that are understood in present-day science and clinical practice, and as much as possible avoid metaphysical explanations. It is useful to be open minded, but not "far out," to conquer our fears of the anomalous, but not be reckless when talking with colleagues
