TRANSFORMATIONAL BREATH WORK IN MEDICAL ILLNESS: Clinical Application and Evidence of Immunoenhancement
The term "transformational breath work" commonly refers ro techniques which use the breath for inducing altered states of consciousness to promote healing on any level. This paper describes common elements of transformational breath work and rationale for its use in medical illness. It then describes the use of one form, Evocative Breath Therapy ™ within a group mind/body medicine program. The technique employs an hour-long, four-stage process of focused awareness on the breath accompanied by guided imagery and evocative music. It is designed to induce an altered state of consciousness that promotes expanded self-awareness, selfacceptance, self-compassion, a sense of inner peace, and release of emotional and physical tension. A pilot study was conducted ro determine the impact of EBTTM on one indicator of immune function, salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). A heterogeneous sample of forty-five adults (21 cancer patients, 22 healthy others, 2 with other illnesses) contributed saliva samples before and immediately after the experience. A 46.3% increase in S-IgA was found (p = 0.0123, paireddifferences t-tesr). There were no significant differences between cancer patients and others. Effect strength was moderate, .278. Leave-one-out analysis found the effect strength to decrease only marginally, suggesting the results are likely generalizeable to independent random samples. Issues in the use of transformational breath work in clinical programs and implications for further research are discussed
INTENTIONAL HEALING: Exploring the Extended Reaches of Consciousness
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possible use of intention as a unifying concept in the study of mind/body/spirit healing. Broadly defined, intentional healing involves the projection of awareness, with purpose and efficacy, toward the well-being of another. The concept of intentional healing encompasses a wide spectrum of health-promoting or healing-triggering activities. This paper will review recent basic science and clinical trials in the area of intentional healing-focusing on the complexities of differentiating between psychological, psychosocial, and psychic influences. Discussion includes issues of experimenter effect, patient expectation, the relationship between baseline psychological factors and medical outcomes, as well as experimental design questions such as choice of healers, structure and duration of intervention, and constructing appropriate blinds. This paper is based on Dr. Schlitz Keynote Address made at the Thirteenth Annual ISSSEEM Conference, Return of the Sacred Science: Celebrating the Mysteries of Healing Uune 19-25, 2003)
SALUTOGENESIS II: AETHER DERIVED ENERGY IN MEDICINE, HEALTH AND HEALING
Living organisms have the ability to derive energy ftom the Aether. The Aether Derived Energy (ADE) is readily stored in aqueous moiety. In the human organism the ADE is utilized in physiologic functions and any excess is emitted. The excess energy is what can be measured as the Cellular Cosmic Signature in the form of Biophotons. When a human organism is "healthy" it emits more ADE in the form of light. When it is sick, it emits less light. Besides ambient Aether, the human organism can obtain ADE through water and food. Reich's Deadly Orgone Radiation (DOR) is the waste byproduct of ADE consumption and it uses the blood as a sink. DOR "toxicity" may be responsible for Homeostasis Decay and is postulated to be the underpinning for illness and attenuation of longevity. The ability to optimize ADE consumption is fundamental to Salurogenesis and while the functions of DOR and ADE are antithetical, DOR may be the critical substance determining longevity in that it is the toxic waste generated in the consumption of ADE. The efficient use of ADE is an integral part of the healing process, from healing in the healthy to healing in the sick
KNOWING AS BEGINNING: OMNI-DISCIPLINED VIEWS ON INTENTION AND HEALING
The long history of healing traditions provides many paths, each offering unique and useful insight. Many cultures understand the power in aesthetic experience to repair body and soul. Research on healing with subtle energies and energy medicine requires multiple methods and perspectives; no one view is adequate to capture the rich complexity of our spiritual and embodied life. Understanding our own personal transformation is required to practice holistic healing with integrity and compassion. This presentation offers multiple working hypotheses and perspectives for the exploration of learning and healing
CHANGE OF ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES IN THE SKIN OF THE BIG TOE DURING ACUTE ASTHMA
Background: Meridian function during acute asthma has not been studied. Materials and Methods: Electrical properties at 14 Well points (most peripheral acupoints) of patients with acute asthma were studied bilaterally before and after treatment in 22 moderate and 5 severe acute episodes. Square wave pulses (3VÅ~256μsec) were sequentially applied via each active electrode (4mm square) on Well points and the indifferent electrode (2 cmÅ~3 cm) on the extensor surface of each forearm about 5 cm above the wrist through an external electric resistance of 100 Ω. The electrical current flowing as a result is characterized by 3 parameters: BP [Before Polarization] current, AP [After Polarization] current, and IQ [Integrated Qoulomb]. Mean and right-to-left difference values of these 3 parameters were calculated for the 14 Well points. These parameters in groups of patients with acute moderate or acute severe asthma were compared with non-asthmatic controls. Results: No significant changes of mean BP, AP or IQ values related to acute asthma were seen at any Well point. On the other hand, the right-to-left IQ difference at the LV (Liver) Well point (IQ(LR)LV) before treatment was significantly greater than after treatment in both acute moderate and acute severe asthma. This difference at the LV Well point (⊿IQ(L-R)LV) before and after treatment was greater in acute severe than in acute moderate asthma. The right-to-left BP difference at the LV Well point (BP(L-R)LV) before treatment was also significantly lower after treatment in acute severe asthma. Conclusions: A meridian reaction occurs during acute asthma in the LV but not in Lung (LU) meridian. Severity of acute asthma associates with increased prominence of the LV meridian reaction
THE ORGONE ENERGY ACCUMULATOR IN THE TREATMENT OF CANCER IN MICE
In the 20th Century Wilhelm Reich described experiments of both a biophysical and physical nature that leant credence to his conclusion that there existed in living and non-living nature a primary force or “mass-free energy”, “orgone energy” that was the fundamental force for all growth and development. Reich and his students also found that through a device, the orgone energy accumulator (ORAC), that this energy could accelerate healing in a variety of pathological conditions. Reich and his students reported many anecdotal healings using the ORAC in a variety of pathological conditions in humans. The only controlled studies were of the treatment of mammary cancer in mice. Of these four studies there was statistically significant prolongation of life in three of the studies and near significant prolongation of life in one of the studies. In the single study where autopsy was obtained the internal organs of the treated mice were found to be remarkably “clean” and intact compared to the degenerated state of the organs of untreated mice
