A POSSIBLE PHYSICAL MECHANISM IN THE TREATMENT OF NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS WITH EXTERNALLY APPLIED PICOTESLA MAGNETIC FIELDS
The recent clinical studies describing the treatment of some neurological disorders with an externally applied picoTesla (10-2 Tesla, or 10-8 gauss) magnetic field are considered from a physical view point. An equation relating the intrinsic (or "rest") energy of a charged particle of mass m with its energy of interaction in an externally applied magnetic field B is presented. The equation represents an initial basic physical interaction as a part of a more complex biological mechanism to explain the therapeutic effects of externally applied magnetic fields in these and other neurologic disorders
CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY PART I: ITS ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT
In this, the second installment of a three part series on CranioSacral Therapy, I have discussed the status of CranioSacral Therapy as a treatment modality today. Also included in the discussion are some of the reasons for its current status, political and control issues that have arisen, its clinical applications, its progeny and integration with other therapeutic approaches, and explorations that are currently underway
BIOFEEDBACK METHODOLOGY IN PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGIC SELF-REGULATION
The principles of successful trammg in biofeedback-aided psychophysiologic self-regulation training are laid out and illustrated with two medical cases, one of cancer and the other of hypertension. Properly taught, biofeedback training is visutllization training, in contradistinction to operant conditioning or traditional therapies, and its beneficial effects include self-mastery, better self-image, and resolution not only of body problems, but mental and emotional difficulties as well
TOWARDS A COMPLEX SYSTEMS MODEL OF PSI PERFORMANCE
If psi is like any other human abiliry, and widely disrribured in rhe popularion, rhan psi performance may be modulated by many of the same facrors that affect other forms of human performance. To test rhis notion, 105 people participated in a series of four psi tests. Participants represented a broad range of age, belief. experience and personality type; data of 96 participants was adequate for further analysis. A rotal of 149 variables were tracked per participant, including psi performance, psychological, sociological, meteorological, and solar-geophysical facrors. The first test relied upon background ionizing radiation as the physical target, the second and third tests used electronic noise, and the fourth test involved a riming task. A single score was used to summarize each individual's psi performance in the four tests. An artificial neural network was trained on the data of 72 participants to see if psi performance could be predicted based on eight variables representing an aggregation of 24 environmental, sociological and psychological factors. The network successfully learned to predict the performance of the remaining 24 people (correlation between prediction and actual performance was r 0.47, p ; 0.01), suggesting that psi performance in the laboratory, and probably in life, is influenced by some of the same environmental factors that influence other forms of human behavior
AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY OF HUMAN ENERGY FIELDS IN INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN
The purpose of this investigation was to observe human energy fields (HEF) in infants and young children. The sample (N 18) consisted of three age groups of approximately 6, 30, and 54 month old children. In this exploratory study, coding was devised to help extrapolate information thar leads to a different understanding of development in children. Literature was reviewed from observations of the HEF of adults and ways of looking ar children historically. This approach was combined with traditional observational methods of studying children to develop this research projecr, using qualirative analysis to identifY any parterns within and be[\veen groups. The observations were made by three observers viewing the HEF, using a facilitator, coding forms, and video documentarion. The findings from rhe study show patterns within and bet\Veen groups indicating there is a developmental HEF change that occurs over the three age groups
A RANDOMIZED DOUBLE-BLIND STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF DISTANT HEALING IN A POPULATION WITH ADVANCED AIDS: Report of a Small Scale Studyl
Various forms of distant healing (DH), including prayer and "psychic healing," are widely practiced, but insufficient formal research has been done to indicate whether such efforts actually affect health. We report on a double-blind randomized trial of DH in 40 patients with advanced AIDS. Subjects were pair-matched for CD4+ count and number of AIDS-defining illnesses and randomly selected to either 10 of DH treatment or a control group. DH treatment was performed by self-identified healers representing many different healing and spiritual traditions. Healers were located throughout the United States during the study, and subjects and healers never met. Subjects were assessed by psychometric testing and blood draw at enrollment and followed for 6 months. At 6 months, a blind medical chart review found that treatment subjects acquired significantly fewer new AIDs-defining illnesses (0.1 versus 0.6 per patient P 0.04), had lower illness severity (severity score 0.8 versus 2.65, P 0.03), and required significantly fewer doctor visits (9.2 versus 13.0, P = 0.01), fewer hospitalizations (0.15 versus 0.6, P = 0.04), and fewer days of hospitalization (0.5 versus 3.4, P 0.04). Treated subjects also showed significantly improved mood compared with controls (Profile of Mood States score -26 versus 14, P 0.02). There were no significant differences in CD4+ counts. These data support the possibility of a DH effect in AIDS and suggest the value of further research
EFFECTS OF QIGONG ON CELL-FREE MYOSIN PHOSPHORYLATION: PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS
This work examines the effect of Qigong from two experienced practitioners on in vitro cellfree myosin phosphorylation. This system has a demonstrated sensitivity to variations in static magnetic fields above and below ambient values. The results show that both Qigong practitioners were able to consistently yield results similar to those observed for variations in applied magnetic fields near the ambient level. Qigong treatment with the myosin reaction mixture in the ambient magnetic field reduced phosphorylation in each experiment by an average of approximately 15% (p < .05). For trials with the myosin samples in a magnetic shield, two of four (one for each practitioner) Qi treatments yielded significant reductions in phosphorylation (average approximately 10%, p < .05). These effects were somewhat lower and not as consistent as those obtained under ambient field conditions. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that Qigong practice can consistently affect a biologically relevant enzyme system. requiring no physical contact between the practitioner and the sample. The mechanisms of the Qigong effects observed in this study are as yet unclear
DEVELOPMENT OF pH AND TEMPERATURE OSCILLATIONS IN WATER CONTAINING ZnC03 CRYSTALLITES USING INTENTION IMPRINTED ELECTRONIC DEVICES
In this experimental study, two vessels, A and B, of pure water containing 0.4 wt. % sparingly soluble, small ZnC03 crystallites were positioned about 150 feet apart in separate buildings. An Intention Imprinted Electronic Device (lIED) was placed one foot from A. Both pH and temperature were monitored at B. Turning on the lIED at A led to the appearance of both short period (about one hour) and long period (about one day) pH-oscillations at location B plus a marked downward decline of the pH in the direction of the lIED intention. In one experiment, the pH declined a full pH unit in accord with the imprinted intention. In another experiment, shaking the vessel at B to redisperse the fine particles when the lIED was operating at A led to a fall in pH but plateauing somewhat short of the final pH as well as the reappearance of the short period oscillations. For control solutions with no present, no such pH behavior occurred
