BEYOND BELIEF: EXPLORING INTERACTIONS AMONG MIND, BODY & ENVIRONMENT

    No full text
Thirteen experiments conducted by four participants over five months explored interactions among mind, body, and aspects of the local, global, and cosmic environment. Specifically, the effects of mental intention on the level of background ionizing radiation was studied, along with physiological correlates of success at the mental task and possible effects of the local magnetic field, planetary geomagnetic field, and sunspot number. The basic experiment continuously measured background radiation at a fixed site using a computer-monitored Geiger counter. At random intervals, a tone sounded. This tone was a signal for a person to mentally intend the count rate returned by the Geiger counter rate to be as low as possible. The mean of the mentally "treated" samples was compared against the mean of control (non-treated) samples to see if differed in accordance with the instructions. Outcomes of seven experiments were in the predicted direction; three were significant at p < .05. Time series analyses of experiments supporting the mental influence hypothesis revealed that the background radiation level dropped in accordance with task instructions only during the treatment periods. Adjacent control periods showed no similar drops. Background radiation levels unexpectedly rose significantly above the background rate twenty seconds after the treatment period. An experiment investigating physiological and local magnetic field correlates suggested that blood volume pulse, heart rate, and the local magnetic field responded differentially in successful vs. unsuccessful trials. Analysis of geophysical and geocosmic factors on the days of the experiments indicated that the absolute level of background radiation was significantly related to success in the experiment, as were days with low sunspot numbers. The overall mean effect size for the mental intention task was less than one standard error from a null effect (es -.0106 ± .0108), but mean effect size adjusted on the basis of the sunspot number on the day of each experiment was more than two standard errors from zero (es -.0226 ± .0108). Overall, the results suggest that future studies investigating subtle mind-body interactions should monitor physiological as well as local, global and even cosmic environmental factors that are often overlooked or ignored as inconsequential. CURRENT & POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOELECTROMAGNETICS IN MEDICINE

    Get PDF
There has been increasing concern about the harmful effects of exposure to ambient electromagnetic fields. However, electromagnetic energy is not a general toxin but a specific modality for transferring information to and from biosystems. Thus, there is great potential for beneficial uses of bioelectromagnetics. This paper speculates on several such possibilities

CARTOGRAPHY OF CONSCIOUSNESS: A FUNCTIONAL RE-EXAMINATION OF THETA, ALPHA, AND BETA

Scalp surface field potential changes (EEG) have long been associated with activities of neuronal processes in the brain. In spite of much knowledge, success in identifYing EEG signatures which represent specific brain activation states has been limited. Using on line fast-fourier transforms of brainwave signals and computer displays with one-second updates of 5, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20 and 28 Hz (with 1 Hz bandwidth), specific brainwave signatures were identified for attentional, cognitive, imaginal, and somatosensory states. The data bring into question the functional utility ascribed to the commonly used brainwave frequency bands designated as Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. The quest for the neuroanatomic substrate of conscious intention is addressed within the context of brain-based parking spots and how they pertain to the invisible and difficult to quantifY thing called "mind.

    THE TRANSITS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Edgar Wilson, M.D. a physician and founder of the Colorado Association for Psychophysiologic Research did research on brain states correlated with states of consciousness for fifteen years. He was especially interested in the transcendent and dissociative states and for 3 years before his death in November 1993, had been considering the effects of brain-based learning technologies on such states. This article is adapted from an address he gave in 1991 and a technical report on a study done with six subjects using a Hemi-Sync process.

    THE PARADOX OF HOLISM

    Get PDF
The obsession with the objective in recent scientific research has resulted in the denigration of the subjective. Fortunately, this view is being questioned by the very scientists who were enamored by the objective. Holism could be a revolutionary concept in some circles, but the practice of holistic medicine has been with us for a very long time. Recently, new ideas have been presented in an attempt to understand the philosophical underpinnings of holism. Unfortunately, few have tried to go back to the ancient sources to clarifY the insights that had given rise to holism in the distant past. Further, questions regarding consciousness and Reality should be answered in a logical and aesthetic manner. In this presentation, an attempt is made to focus on the main issues in concepts related to holism. Can and should we measure effects of a holistic therapy? If we postulate mechanisms of a holistic therapy, does the holistic therapy become mechanistic? And, ultimately, can consciousness be measured? While such questions might sound trivial, the philosophical outlook that searches for answers to these questions are important. This paper focusses on some of these issues and tries to provide a framework for continued discussion in clarifYing the paradox that presently permeates holism

FEARS OF THE PARANORMAL IN OURSELVES AND OUR COLLEAGUES: RECOGNIZING THEM, DEALING WITH THEM

    Get PDF
Ostensibly objective scientists frequently show quite irrational and unethical behavior when presented with data about psi (psychic phenomena), the paranormal, subtle energies, and the like. Observations and some research suggests that, in addition to ignorance, semi-consciousness and unacknowledged fears of psi affect their thought and behaviors. Even researchers who advocate the importance of psi sometimes show similar distorted behavior, especially when effect size goes beyond statistically-significant-but-practically-trivial effects and become strong. Such unrecognized and unacknowledged resistance can sabotage both research and application. The researcher is not independent of the research in these areas. This paper focuses on recognizing and dealing with these widespread ambivalences and fears about psi phenomena

A NEW APPROACH TO THE STUDIES OF SUBTLE ENERGIES

The effects of subtle energies are criticized by many people as nothing but suggestion, and doubts have been cast on their effects on the living body. We have studied the effects of healing using the following parameters. 1. Changes in consciousness by recording EEG; 2. Changes in autonomic functions, such as pulse rate and blood pressure; 3. Changes in meridians; 4. changes in the discharge patterns of leaves under healing using Kirlian photography. It was found that a healer caused changes in the acdvity of meridians, increase in corona discharges of leaves, and synchronous changes in the EEG of both a healer and receiver during healing. The origin of healing energies has not been elucidated yet, but the existence of subtle energies is demonstrated
