CONSCIOUSNESS AND COGNITION IN ALTERNATIVE HEALERS: AN INTERIM REpORT ON RESEARCH INTO THE RELATIONSHIP OF BELIEF, HEALING, AND PURPORTED SUBTLE ENERGIES
Get PDFThis ongoing research explores the psychological processes associated with the attempts of individuals who attempt to beneficially influence physiology of living organisms through such methods as wishing, laying-on of hands, prayer, and the purported transfer of subtle "energy." Participants met specific criteria of social and/or scientific acceptability. A multiphasic research approach is explored in which the writings of a variety of healers were analyzed. A content analysis of the writings of 3 scholarly healer-researchers clarified and objectified healers' esoteric language, and an experiential inventory was developed. A systematic analysis was then performed using 10 books wrinen by well known healers in combination with 10 taped interviews of individuals who demonstrated healing (or biological influencing) under controlled conditions. Interviewees also ranked the importance of each major area of consciousness. Ranked averages indicate that the principal features of Transpersonal Healing (TH) are alterations in attention, cognitive processes and sense of self. Qualitative analysis reveals that TH involves self-regulation of attention, physiology, and cognition, the induction of altered awareness and reorganization of the healer's construction of cultural and personal realities. Attention is directed towards intrapsychic processes, resulting in (1) increased accessibility of subconscious materials, (2) enhanced empathy, (3) heightened emotional responses. (4) modified aHirudes. (5) altered meanings, and (6) distortions in time sense. Most significant among ontologic changes is a modification. or transcendence. of the healers' ordinary sense of self and absorption within functional beliefs. TH healer types appear to represent a range of contemporary subtypes of "pure" shamanic practice, the core process of TH being described as encompassing methodologies used to intentionally activate an endogenous healing potential. A taxonomic system is proposed and recommendations for future research are presented.

No full textIt is the author's contention that modem neurophysiology is based upon the operations ofless than half of the brain and that the anatomical and functional existence of more than half of the cells constituting the nelVOW system are ignored. The author argues that the neurone doctrine, which holds that all functions of the nervow system are the result of operations of the neurons alone, is incomplete, and that a more basic and primitive information transfer system resides in these neglected cells.Theoretical considerations. prior dc:ctrophysiological evidences which were ignored, modem aspects of electrophysiology and evidence derived from the new science of bioelearomagnetics will be presented to support the theory of a "dual nervow system." This theory re-introduces some of the ancient ideas of mind functions into present day consideration of the possible operations of the mindlbrain system
Numerical Analysis and Theoretical Modelling of Causal Effects of Conscious Intention
Get PDFThis paper describes a 13 year long, and still continuing, series of laboratory experiments that demonstrate that persons are able to exert direct mental influences upon a variety of biological systems that are situated at a distance from the influencer and shielded from all conventional informational and energetic influences. The spontaneously fluctuating activity of the target system is monitored objectively during randomly interspersed influence and noninfluence (control) periods while, in a distant room, a person attempts to influence the system's activity in a prespecified manner using mental processes of intentionality, focused attention, and imagery of desired outcomes. The experimental design rules out subtle cues, recording errors, expectancy and suggestion ("placebo") effects, artifactual reactions to external stimuli, confounding internal rhythms, and coincidental or chance correspondences. Distantly influenced systems include: another person's electrodermal activity, blood pressure, and muscular activity; the spatial orientation of fish; the locomotor activity of small mammals; and the rate of hemolysis of human red blood cells. The experiments are viewed as laboratory analogs of mental healing

This series of three articles on the model and the supporting evidence has presented an alternative way to think about phenomena at the human leveL The expanded science outlined could well lead to a world view or paradigm that will help us better understand how we perceive "reality." The interplay between the body/heart/brain and patterns beyond space-time and the relationship of this interplay to the set of real physical constraints that govern the electrochemistry of the body becomes apparent. The model provides a physical basis for understanding why there can be no actual limits to human potential

EXPANDING LEGAL PARADIGMS TO INCORPORATE SUBTLE ENERGIES
No full textThis article will summarize some of the legal, ethical, and bioethical issues raised by alternative/complementary therapies and energy medicine. This exploration should interest at least three overlapping audiences: (1) providers of alternative and complementary therapies, who seek guidance in order to minimize legal risks in their practice, (2) lawyers, lobbyists, legislators, judges, and patients, who probe the limits of lawful access to alternative treatments, and (3) insurance companies, HMO's, hospitals, hospices, and other institutional actors pursuing legal inclusion of alternative and complementary therapies in third-party reimbutsement schemes and health plans. Providers often think of legal issues in a defensive posture-for example, in terms of avoiding malpractice, conviction, or sanction. Legal barriers, however, also can suggest ways to shift the larger social debate about health care and reform. Legal professionals often underestimate the potential role of nonmedical and alternative providers in an integrated health care system. Insurance and health care institutions need greater understanding of prevailing legal rules to determine how to incorporate alternative/complementary therapies that minimizes risks and honors legal boundaries
